Large-scale planar and spherical light-emitting diodes based on arrays of perovskite quantum wires

Halide perovskites are enticing candidates for highly efficient planar light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with commercial potential in displays and lighting. However, it remains a challenge for conventional solution fabrication processes to fabricate large-scale or non-planar LEDs due to the non-uniformity of perovskite films in conjunction with material stability issues. Here large-area highly uniform

Lipid vesicular gels for topical administration of antioxidants

The application of a formulation on the skin represents an effective way to deliver bio-active molecules for therapeutical purposes. Moreover, the outermost skin layer, the stratum corneum, can be overcome by employing chemical permeation enhancers and edge activators as components. Several lipids can be considered as permeation enhancers, such as the ubiquitous monoolein, one of the most used bui

Strained Inx Ga(1-x )As/InP near surface quantum wells and MOSFETs

We present electronic band structure properties of strained InxGa(1-x)As/InP heterostructure near surface quantum wells oriented in the (100) crystallographic direction using eight-band k · p theory, which are further parameterized by an energy level, effective mass, and nonparabolicity factor. The electronic band structure parameters are studied for the well composition of 0.2 ≤ x ≤ 1 and thickne

Hofstadter butterflies in magnetically modulated graphene bilayer : An algebraic approach

It has been shown that Bernal stacked bilayer graphene (BLG) in a uniform magnetic field demonstrates integer quantum Hall effect with a zero Landau-level anomaly (Novoselov et al., 2006). In this article we consider such system in a two dimensional periodic magnetic modulation with square lattice symmetry. It is shown algebraically that the resulting Hofstadter spectrum can be expressed in terms

Incidence of melancholic depression by age of onset and gender in the Lundby population, 1947–1997

Whether melancholic depression is a distinct syndrome or not has long been debated. There are few studies providing information about the epidemiology of melancholic depression. In this study, we investigate the incidence rates, overall as well as by gender and age of onset of melancholic depression according to Taylor and Fink and corresponding DSM–IV disorders: major depressive disorder (MDD) wi

Impact of the Nordic Arthroplasty Register Association (NARA) collaboration on demographics, methods and revision rates in knee arthroplasty : a register-based study from NARA 2000–2017

Background and purpose — We have previously observed differences in treatment and outcome of knee arthroplasties in the Nordic countries. To evaluate the impact of Nordic collaboration in the last 15 years we aimed to compare patient demographics, methods, and revision rates in primary knee arthroplasties among the 4 Nordic countries. Patients and methods — We included 535,051 primary knee arthrop

Diabetic retinopathy as a predictor for peripheral compression neuropathies, a registry-based study

Diabetes is characterized by hyperglycaemia and entails many complications, including retinopathy and entrapment neuropathies, such as ulnar nerve entrapment (UNE) and carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Hyperglycaemia damages the nerves of the retina, as well as peripheral nerves. There is a correlation between entrapment neuropathies and retinopathy in patients with diabetes, but whether patients with

The Leydig cell biomarker INSL3 as a predictor of age-related morbidity : Findings from the EMAS cohort

Background: Insulin-like peptide 3 (INSL3) is a constitutive hormone secreted in men by the mature Leydig cells of the testes. It is an accurate biomarker for Leydig cell functional capacity, reflecting their total cell number and differentiation status. Objectives: To determine the ability of INSL3 to predict hypogonadism and age-related morbidity using the EMAS cohort of older community-dwelling

Chronic opioid use before and after exercise therapy and patient education among patients with knee or hip osteoarthritis

Objective: To investigate changes in opioid use after supervised exercise therapy and patient education among knee or hip osteoarthritis patients with chronic opioid use. Method: In this cohort study, we linked data from the Good Life with osteoArthritis in Denmark register (GLA:D®; standardised treatment program for osteoarthritis; January 2013 to November 2018) with national health registries. A

Does hormonal therapy improve sperm retrieval rates in men with non-obstructive azoospermia : a systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND: The beneficial effects of hormonal therapy in stimulating spermatogenesis in patients with non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA) and either normal gonadotrophins or hypergonadotropic hypogonadism prior to surgical sperm retrieval (SSR) is controversial. Although the European Association of Urology guidelines state that hormone stimulation is not recommended in routine clinical practice, a

Measurements of Strong-Interaction Effects in Kaonic-Helium Isotopes at Sub-eV Precision with X-Ray Microcalorimeters

We have measured the 3d→2p transition x rays of kaonic 3He and 4He atoms using superconducting transition-edge-sensor microcalorimeters with an energy resolution better than 6 eV (FWHM). We determined the energies to be 6224.5±0.4(stat)±0.2(syst) eV and 6463.7±0.3(stat)±0.1(syst) eV, and widths to be 2.5±1.0(stat)±0.4(syst) eV and 1.0±0.6(stat)±0.3(stat) eV, for kaonic 3He and 4He, respectively.

Substantial clinical benefit and patient acceptable symptom states of the Forgotten Joint Score 12 after primary knee arthroplasty

Background and purpose - Knowing how to interpret values obtained with patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) is essential. We estimated the substantial clinical benefit (SCB) and patient acceptable symptom state (PASS) for Forgotten Joint Score 12 (FJS) and explored differences depending on methods used for the estimates. Patients and methods - The study was based on 195 knee arthroplasties (K

Magnetization-induced optical rectification and inverse spin Hall effect for interfacial terahertz generation in metallic heterostructures

Metallic heterostructure as promising terahertz (THz) spintronic emitters has promoted the development of both spintronics and THz science. However, the underlying physics at the metallic interface, such as the nonlinear optical effect, remains unclear. Herein, we present interface magnetization induced THz generation from metallic heterostructure consisting of Heusler alloy CoFeMnSi (CFMS) and Pd

Minimal excitation single-particle emitters : Comparison of charge-transport and energy-transport properties

We investigate different types of time-dependently driven single-particle sources whose common feature is that they produce pulses of integer charge and minimally excite the Fermi sea. These sources are: a slowly driven mesoscopic capacitor, a Lorentzian-shaped time-dependent bias voltage, and a local gate-voltage modulation of a quantum Hall edge state. They differ by their specific driving proto

Field-induced exciton dissociation in PTB7-based organic solar cells

The physics of charge separation in organic semiconductors is a topic of ongoing research of relevance to material and device engineering. Herein, we present experimental observations of the field and temperature dependence of charge separation from singlet excitons in PTB7 and PC71BM, and from charge-transfer states created across interfaces in PTB7/PC71BM bulk heterojunction solar cells. We obta

Advantages of binary stochastic synapses for hardware spiking neural networks with realistic memristors

Hardware implementing spiking neural networks (SNNs) has the potential to provide transformative gains in energy efficiency and throughput for energy-restricted machine-learning tasks. This is enabled by large arrays of memristive synapse devices that can be realized by various emerging memory technologies. But in practice, the performance of such hardware is limited by non-ideal features of the m

Targeting population groups with heavier burden of hepatocellular carcinoma incidence : a nationwide descriptive epidemiological study in Sweden

Contemporary European studies examining associations between socioeconomic status and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) incidence are scarce. We aimed to target population groups with a heavier burden of HCC by assessing associations of individual-level sociodemographic variables and neighbourhood deprivation with all-stage and stage-specific HCC incidence rates (IR). Patient and population data stra
