Petrolyphs from a semiotic perspective

The reading seminar of Matt J. Rossano’s article  (Making Friends, Making Tools, and Making Symbols. Current Anthropology, Vol. 51, No. S1, Working Memory: Beyond Language and Symbolism (June 2010), pp. S89-S98) will be introduced with a short presentation of two ways to approach the study of petroglyphs within a semiotic framework: Rossano’s (based on Peirce) and a cultural semiotic one (based on the Tartu school, Sonesson and C. Rédei). The purpose of the presentation is to invoke a discussion on how cognitive semiotics might develop a new approach, based on earlier studies, to the studies of prehistoric artefacts, like for instance petroglyphs.
