Lotman in the Study of Cognition: Part II

Aleksei Semenenko (Slavic languages, Stockholm University)
The presentation offers an extension and development of Yuri Lotman’s semiotic theory in the context of cognitive semiotics. I make a preliminary attempt to describe an approach to studying the generative mechanisms of human consciousness, following and extending the original definition of the semiosphere by Lotman. I also intend to demonstrate how Lotman’s methodology and his interpretation of culture prove to be pertinent to the present-day study of cognition. I position Lotman’s legacy in the modern context and focus on the following premises of Lotman’s theory: 1) human consciousness is essentially polyglot, 2) art is a unique human feature that functions as a cognitive device, 3) culture is both a collective memory and a collective intellect, 4) culture is isomorphic and isofunctinal to individual consciousness.
