We need a protein shift

The climate cannot handle the amount of animals we eat. There needs to be a protein shift, according to researcher Karolina Östbring who is involved in the Sustainability Week. Her vision is to create a platform for research on vegetable proteins at LU. Karolina Östberg  Photo: Kennet Ruona. The human population is growing, while our ecological footprint needs to become much lower in order to redu

Faster and better healing of infected wounds using negative pressure technique

This article is over 5 years old, and the information may therefore be outdated. Shorter wound healing time, fewer dressing changes and the opportunity for earlier discharge from the hospital. These are some of the benefits of negative pressure wound therapy to treat wound infections in connection with vascular surgery at the groin. The method, which has become increasingly common, is also cost-ef

Biological computers could use far less energy than current technology – by working more slowly

Modern computers are a triumph of technology. A single computer chip contains billions of nanometre-scaled transistors that operate extremely reliably and at a rate of millions of operations per second. However, this high speed and reliability come at the cost of significant energy consumption: data centres and household IT appliances like computers and smartphones account for around 3% of global

Nestling birds in the city clearly affected by air pollution and which trees surround them

Life in the city is tough – if you are a baby bird you are markedly affected by a certain type of air pollution and by which trees are close to the nest, new research shows. Underlying the study is a new more detailed way of investigating what factors in an urban environment impact birds and animals. Cities are generally a harsh environment for birds and other animals to live in, but researchers d

Altered cell behaviour behind resistance in neuroblastoma

Researchers at Lund University in Sweden have identified one of the reasons why the childhood cancer neuroblastoma becomes resistant to chemotherapy. The findings are significant for how future treatments should be designed. The results have been published in Science Advances. Neuroblastoma is an aggressive cancer of the sympathetic nervous system, especially of the adrenal gland. Despite intense

Migratory birds can be taught to adjust to climate change

One result of climate change is that spring is arriving earlier. However, migratory birds are not keeping up with these developments and arrive too late for the peak in food availability when it is time for breeding. By getting the birds to fly a little further north, researchers in Lund, Sweden, and the Netherlands have observed that these birds can give their chicks a better start in life. Globa

Cutting out sugar and starch is as effective for IBS as current recommendations

Symptoms for patients with the gastrointestinal disease IBS improved as much by eating less sugar and starch as for those who followed FODMAP – the diet currently recommended to patients. The results, presented in a new study from Lund University in Sweden, also show that weight loss is greater and sugar cravings are reduced among those who follow the starch and sucrose-reduced diet. New findings could transform the treatment of brain injuries and stroke

It was previously thought that damage to the neural pathways was the sole cause of the motor problems that are typical after a brain injury or stroke. However, new research led by researcher at Lund and Uppsala Universities in Sweden now shows that hormones released after these injuries appear to contribute in a dramatic way. The results indicate that hormone-blocking drugs could be used to counte
