Development Research Day

About Development Research DayHow it all startedThe Development Research Day is an interdisciplinary arrangement that was initiated in order to form a meeting ground for all researchers and students at Lund University who share an interest in development issues. The first Development Research DayThe event was launched in 2002 by the Department of Political Science at Lund University. Since then, th

Challenges in Monte Carlo Event Generator Software for High-Luminosity LHC

We review the main software and computing challenges for the Monte Carlo physics event generators used by the LHC experiments, in view of the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) physics programme. This paper has been prepared by the HEP Software Foundation (HSF) Physics Event Generator Working Group as an input to the LHCC review of HL-LHC computing, which has started in May 2020.

Transductive Image Segmentation : Self-training and Effect of Uncertainty Estimation

Semi-supervised learning (SSL) uses unlabeled data during training to learn better models. Previous studies on SSL for medical image segmentation focused mostly on improving model generalization to unseen data. In some applications, however, our primary interest is not generalization but to obtain optimal predictions on a specific unlabeled database that is fully available during model development

Hypothermia versus normothermia after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest

BACKGROUND Targeted temperature management is recommended for patients after cardiac arrest, but the supporting evidence is of low certainty. METHODS In an open-label trial with blinded assessment of outcomes, we randomly assigned 1900 adults with coma who had had an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest of presumed cardiac or unknown cause to undergo targeted hypothermia at 33°C, followed by controlled

Preventing dementia by preventing stroke : The Berlin Manifesto

The incidence of stroke and dementia are diverging across the world, rising for those in low- and middle-income countries and falling in those in high-income countries. This suggests that whatever factors cause these trends are potentially modifiable. At the population level, neurological disorders as a group account for the largest proportion of disability-adjusted life years globally (10%). Amon

Effects of very early hyperoxemia on neurologic outcome after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest : A secondary analysis of the TTM-2 trial

Purpose: Hyperoxemia is common in patients resuscitated after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) and may increase the risk of mortality. However, the effect of hyperoxemia on functional outcome, specifically related to the timing of exposure to hyperoxemia, remains unclear. Methods: The secondary analysis of the Target Temperature Management 2 (TTM-2) r

Consensus-based recommendations for diagnosis and surgical management of cranioplasty and post-traumatic hydrocephalus from a European panel

Introduction: Planning cranioplasty (CPL) in patients with suspected or proven post-traumatic hydrocephalus (PTH) poses a significant management challenge due to a lack of clear guidance. Research question: This project aims to create a European document to improve adherence and adapt to local protocols based on available resources and national health systems. Methods: After a thorough non-systema

EEG for good outcome prediction after cardiac arrest : A multicentre cohort study

Aim: Assess the prognostic ability of a non-highly malignant and reactive EEG to predict good outcome after cardiac arrest (CA). Methods: Prospective observational multicentre substudy of the “Targeted Hypothermia versus Targeted Normothermia after Out-of-hospital Cardiac Arrest Trial”, also known as the TTM2-trial. Presence or absence of highly malignant EEG patterns and EEG reactivity to externa

Multiple Forms of Endocannabinoid and Endovanilloid Signaling Regulate the Tonic Control of GABA Release

UNLABELLED: Persistent CB1 cannabinoid receptor activity limits neurotransmitter release at various synapses throughout the brain. However, it is not fully understood how constitutively active CB1 receptors, tonic endocannabinoid signaling, and its regulation by multiple serine hydrolases contribute to the synapse-specific calibration of neurotransmitter release probability. To address this questi

A core outcome set for cranioplasty following stroke or traumatic brain injury - The COAST study

INTRODUCTION: There is substantial heterogeneity in the reporting of outcomes in the global cranioplasty literature. This study aimed to establish a core outcome set (COS) for cranioplasty after decompressive craniectomy for stroke or traumatic brain injury.METHODOLOGY: The scope was defined according to the criteria recommended by the Core Outcome Measures in Effectiveness Trials (COMET) Initiati

Common practice elements of cognitive behavioral therapy for gaming disorder : A systematic review and expert panel evaluation

Gaming disorder (GD) is an addictive disorder with health and social impacts recognized by the World Health Organization. Although the GD treatment evidence base appear to favor cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), knowledge of its common practice elements is limited. This systematic review critically evaluates CBT interventions for GD, encompassing individual, group, and mixed approaches, to ident

To work or not to work in an extended working life? Factors in working and retirement decisions

Popular Abstract in Swedish Antalet äldre i befolkningen ökar i förhållande till andra åldersgrupper. Detta beskrivs medföra en ekonomisk utmaning för samhället och att fler äldre behöver skjuta upp sin ålderspension. Avhandlingen bygger på fyra studier med det övergripande syftet att bidra till ökad kunskap om faktorer som medverkar till ett förlängt alternativt förkortat arbetsliv bland personerIn most of the industrialised world, the proportion of older and retired people in the population is continuously increasing. This will have budgetary implications for maintaining the welfare state, because the active working section of the population must fund the non-active and old population. Aim: The overall aim of this thesis was to obtain knowledge about older workers’ work and life situatio

Evidence for shape coexistence at medium spin in Rb-76

Four previously known rotational bands in Rb-76 have been extended to moderate spins using the Gammasphere and Microball gamma ray and charged particle detector arrays and the Ca-40(Ca-40,3pn) reaction at a beam energy of 165 MeV. The properties of two of the negative-parity bands can only readily be interpreted in terms of the highly successful Cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky model calculations if the

The project is an initiative by the Stockholm Police. Collaborating partners in the project are the Swedish Coast Guard, Region Northeast; the Helsinki Police; the Gulf of Finland Coast Guard District; the Police and Border Guard Board in Estonia; the State Border Guard of the Republic of Latvia; and the State

Protocolised reduction of non-resuscitation fluids versus usual care in patients with septic shock (REDUSE) : a protocol for a multicentre feasibility trial

INTRODUCTION: Administration of large volumes of fluids is associated with poor outcome in septic shock. Recent data suggest that non-resuscitation fluids are the major source of fluids in the intensive care unit (ICU) patients suffering from septic shock. The present trial is designed to test the hypothesis that a protocol targeting this source of fluids can reduce fluid administration compared w
