Capable to Care? Parenting Support Policies and the Changing Concept of Care

This paper explores the changing meanings and understandings of the concept of care in parenting support policies in Sweden since the 1990s. Caring responsibilities and practices has historically been framed and negotiated within general family policy reforms, comprising universal child allowances and generous parental leave schemes combined with publicly funded childcare, in turn closely related Åsa LundqvistProfessor in SociologyDepartment of SociologyLund UniversitySwedenAsa.Lundqvist@soc.lu.seAbstractCapable to Care?

Analysis of the potential of assessing sustainable production with a cost model

This paper investigates the usability of a cost model to assess sustainable production. The aim is to develop an established cost model to also take sustainability into consideration and hence evaluate sustainable production on the shop floor. To facilitate the analyse literature have been studied to find indicators for sustainable production. The indicators have then been mappedtogether with para

Strategic ignorance of health risk: its causes and policy consequences

We examine the causes and policy implications of strategic (willful) ignorance of risk as an excuse to overengage in risky health behavior. In an experiment on Copenhagen adults, we allow subjects to choose whether to learn the calorie content of a meal before consuming it, and measure their subsequent calorie intake. Consistent with previous studies, we find strong evidence of strategic ignoranceWe examine the causes and policy implications of strategic (willful) ignorance of risk as an excuse to over-engage in risky health behavior.

Splitting or synonymizing – genus concept and taxonomy exemplified by the Parmeliaceae in the Nordic region.

The current use of a 30 million year dateline for accepting genera in the Parmeliaceae is evaluated. Its value is doubtful since evolution obviously went quicker in some lichen groups compared with others. Parallel evolution is also very common among lichens. Polyphyletic genera should always be split, while sister groups may remain split or be combined after considering non-molecular characters.

A Social Equity Analysis of Swedish and Scottish National Transport Policy

The topic of social equity in transport planning has been dealt with in particular by authors such as Martens (2012) and Martens and Golob (2012) using a social justice based approach. However, such an approach, whilst valuable and analytically rigorous (based as it is on accessibility modelling), does not consider a wide range of possible other social impacts of transport, as set out in a framewoThe topic of social equity in transport planning has been dealt with in particular by authors such as Martens (2012) and Martens and Golob (2012) using a social justice based approach. Communicating unknown objects to robots through pointing gestures

Delegating tasks from a human to a robot needs an efficient and easy-to-use communication pipeline between them - especially when inexperienced users are involved. This work presents a robotic system that is able to bridge this communication gap by exploiting 3D sensing for gesture recognition and real-time object segmentation. We visually extract an unknown object indicated by a human through a p

Modeling of nucleation and growth in glass-forming alloys using a combination of classical and phase-field theory

For metallic glasses, it is of vital importance to understand the glass formation properties and to be able to predict the crystallization process in the supercooled liquid. In the present work, we model the process of nucleation and growth using a combination of classical nucleation and phase-field theory. A diffusion coupled phase-field model is used to evaluate the work of formation and the gro

Puzzling out the choice of capital budgeting techniques : Among high-growth small and medium sized firms

The aim of this dissertation is to explore the drivers of practitioners’ choices of capital budgeting techniques (CBT). The mainstream literature suggests that sophisticated CBT (SCBT) will best guide organizations in evaluating important strategic investments. Small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) choose to go against that “wisdom” and choose non-sophisticated CBT (NSCBT).Instead of following The aim of this dissertation is to explore the drivers of practitioners’ choices of capital budgeting techniques (CBT). Motivational Interviewing as Evidence-Based Practice? An Example from Sexual Risk Reduction Interventions Targeting Adolescents and Young Adults

This paper critically examines sexual risk reduction interventions, more specifically how they are evaluated and the implications that this has for sexual health policy. The focus is on motivational interviewing (MI) interventions which aim to promote protective behaviors related to sexual risk on the part of young people. MI has become increasingly popular, largely due to it being a highly flexib

Shrinking or expanding access to civic space? : The consequences of hate speech, threats and harassment within Swedish civil society

Previous research has focused on how governments and public authorities can limit civil society organisations’ (CSOs) autonomy by shrinking their operational civic space and their democratic functions. There has been less attention paid to how other external actors and types of pressure might restrict access to civic space and how it can induce coping responses on both an individual and organizati

Lingering landscapes: an examination of the heterogeneous remains of welfare planning

This paper explores how landscape can be used as a lens to understand lingering as a geographical concept. Following the European Landscape Convention, landscape is defined as “an area, as perceived by people, whose character is the result of the action and interaction of natural and/or human factors”. Thus, landscape assembles practices, perceptions and natural processes in an a-modern manner; th

Dealing with police stops : How young people with ethnic minority backgrounds narrate their ways of managing over-policing in the Nordic countries

Research shows that young people within ethnic minorities are subjected to police control more often than others, which seems to have a damaging effect on their trust in the police as well as on their wider sense of belonging. What is less often researched is how these young people deal with being over-policed. Klimat och konflikt i Syrien: Ett rumsligt perspektiv på torka, jordbruk och sårbarhet i Syrien under perioden 2000–2022 : Climate and conflict in Syria: a spatial perspective of drought, agriculture and vulerability in Syria during the period 2000–2022

The Syrian civil war has been described as a first example of the conflicts expected in the wake of climate change. The conflict, which started in 2011, was preceded by a severe drought in 2007–2009 that hit agriculture and the rural population hard. But what do we really know about what happened to Syria’s climate and agriculture before and after the start of the conflict? In this article, I summ
