Supported housing in the community for persons with severe mental illness. Psychosocial environment, needs, quality of life and social network.

Eighty-three persons with severe mental illness living in three different types of housing setting accepted to participate in the interviews, which took place between December 1997 and April 2000. These settings were: inpatient se

Retroviral gene transfer to repopulating hematopoietic cells

Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) have the capacity to maintain hematopoiesis throughout life. HSCs are ideal targets for permanent gene transfer, as the transgene will be expressed in all the progeny of the gene-modified stem cells. The aim of this thesis was to optimize conditions for retroviral gene transfer to human candidate HSCs and to study mechanisms interfering with efficient gene transfer.

Information Practices in Professional Life

This keynote concerns social aspects of information seeking and use in professional life and how these are made explicit in information practices. In particular, the keynote focuses on how professionals’ activities in relation to information artefacts, as well as the artefacts in themselves, are socially constructed in context-bound practices. Arguments in favour of an interest in peoples’ informa

A Swedish Population-Based Multivariate Twin Study of Externalizing Disorders.

In epidemiological and twin populations, prior interview studies have identified an externalizing spectrum of disorders. Could this be detected utilizing objective registry data? In 20,603 twin pairs from the Swedish Twin Registry, we obtained information from national medical, criminal and pharmacy records on drug abuse (DA), criminal behavior (CB) and alcohol use disorders (AUD). Multivariate tw

A meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies identifies novel variants associated with osteoarthritis of the hip

Objectives Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis with a clear genetic component. To identify novel loci associated with hip OA we performed a meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) on European subjects. Methods We performed a two-stage meta-analysis on more than 78 000 participants. In stage 1, we synthesised data from eight GWAS whereas data from 10 centres wer

Risk and vulnerability analysis in society’s proactive emergency management: Developing methods and improving practices

Risk and vulnerability analyses can play important roles in the society’s proactive emergency management. This thesis addresses two ways of improving the analysis of risk and vulnerability analysis in this context. First, by developing methods for risk and vulnerability analysis of technical infrastructure networks and emergency response systems. Secondly, by aiming to improve practises related to

Epigenetics and obesity: the devil is in the details

Obesity is a complex disease with multiple well-defined risk factors. Nevertheless, susceptibility to obesity and its sequelae within obesogenic environments varies greatly from one person to the next, suggesting a role for gene x environment interactions in the etiology of the disorder. Epigenetic regulation of the human genome provides a putative mechanism by which specific environmental exposur

Does Allergen-specific Immunotherapy Induce Contact Allergy to Aluminium?

Persistent, itching nodules have been reported to appear at the injection site after allergen-specific immuno-therapy with aluminium-precipitated antigen extract, occasionally in conjunction with contact allergy to aluminium. This study aimed to quantify the development of contact allergy to aluminium during allergen-specific immunotherapy. A randomized, controlled, single-blind multicentre study

External and internal factors influencing self-directed online learning of physiotherapy undergraduate students in Sweden: a qualitative study.

Online courses have become common in health sciences education. This learning environment can be designed using different approaches to support student learning. To further develop online environment, it is important to understand how students perceive working and learning online. The aim of this study is to identify aspects influencing students' learning processes and their adaptation to self-dir

In early rheumatoid arthritis, patients with a good initial response to methotrexate have excellent 2-year clinical outcomes, but radiological progression is not fully prevented: data from the methotrexate responders population in the SWEFOT trial

Objective To investigate the 2-year clinical and radiological outcomes of patients with early rheumatoid arthritis (RA; symptom duration <1 year) who had initially responded well to methotrexate monotherapy. Methods In the SWEFOT trial, all 487 patients started methotrexate (target dose 20 mg/week). After 3-4 months, 147 had low disease activity, 28-joint based disease activity score (DAS28) <= 3.

A healthy diet with and without cereal grains and dairy products in patients with type 2 diabetes: study protocol for a random-order cross-over pilot study - Alimentation and Diabetes in Lanzarote -ADILAN.

Research on the role of nutrition in type 2 diabetes has largely focused on macro/micronutrient composition and dietary fiber intake, while fewer studies have tested the effects of differing food choice. Some observational studies and short-term intervention studies suggest that a food pattern mimicking the diet with which humans evolved positively influences glucose control and associated endocri

Fluid and Highly Curved Model Membranes on Vertical Nanowire Arrays

Sensing and manipulating living cells using vertical nanowire devices requires a complete understanding of cell behavior on these substrates. Changes in cell function and phenotype are often triggered by events taking place at the plasma membrane, the properties of which are influenced by local curvature. The nanowire topography can therefore be expected to greatly affect the cell membrane, emphas

Evaluation of A2BP1 as an Obesity Gene

OBJECTIVE-A genome-wide association study (GWAS) in Pima Indians (n = 413) identified variation in the ataxin-2 binding protein 1 gene (A2BP1) that was associated with percent body fat. On the basis of this association and the obese phenotype of ataxin-2 knockout mice, A2BP1 was genetically and functionally analyzed to assess its potential role in human obesity. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS-Variant

A genome-wide approach accounting for body mass index identifies genetic variants influencing fasting glycemic traits and insulin resistance

Recent genome-wide association studies have described many loci implicated in type 2 diabetes (T2D) pathophysiology and beta-cell dysfunction but have contributed little to the understanding of the genetic basis of insulin resistance. We hypothesized that genes implicated in insulin resistance pathways might be uncovered by accounting for differences in body mass index (BMI) and potential interact

Evaluation of Systolic and Diastolic Hypotension in Dementia with Lewy Bodies and Alzheimer’s Disease.

BACKGROUND: Orthostatic hypotension (OH) can be seen in as many as 30% to 50% of the elderly population as well as in dementia. OH is part of the autonomic dysfunction in dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and prevalent in the majority of these patients. It is also suggested to be a negative prognostic factor for survival in DLB. A detailed interpretation of the 10-minute orthostatic blood pressure m

Control of composition and morphology in InGaAs nanowires grown by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy

InGaAs nanowires grown by Metalorganic Vapor Phase Epitaxy (MOVPE) are promising candidates in future device technologies. The control of the chemical composition of InGaAs nanowires is not trivial due to the In atom diffusion from the substrate, which causes significant variations in the chemical composition along the nanowire. In this work, we report on the growth of InGaAs nanowires on (111)B I
