The family as the health producer--when spouses act strategically.

The Grossman model has been extended recently in order to take account of the fact that most people lead their lives in a family--using frameworks in which family members, respectively, (a) have common preferences and (b) are Nash-bargainers. These models, however, do not consider individual incentives for behaving strategically. In the model presented in this paper, spouses interact strategically

Age and reproduction in lesser spotted woodpeckers (Dendrocopos minor)

We examined the influence of female age, male age, and pair-bond duration on start of egg-laying, clutch size, and number of young fledged in the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos minor). We also attempted to disentangle the relative influence of individual age and pair-bond duration on reproduction, because the effect of those factors may be confounded. Brooding performance improved with age

Diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis: a comparative analysis of 3 immunoassays, an immune complex assay and the polymerase chain reaction

OBJECTIVE: To compare 3 immunoassays, an immune complex assay, and an application of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis (TBM). MATERIAL: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from 33 patients with TBM and from 34 control patients with infectious and non-infectious CNS diseases was analysed. Revising the null model in language evolution research

We comment on the consequences of the target article for language evolution research. We propose that the default assumption should be that of language-readiness in extinct hominins, and the integration of different types of available evidence from multiple disciplines should be used to assess the likely extent of the realization of this readiness. The role of archaeological evidence should be rec

Same, Different or Diverse? An Analysis of the European Union´s Gender Mainstreaming Policies- A Critical Comment

This paper examines the adoption of the EU´s gender mainstreaming policies. More specifically, the purpose of this paper is to explore how gender equality has been constructed and what this implies in terms of representations of gender and possibilities of transformation. By using discourse theory drawing mainly on Laclau and Mouffe, the policy document 'A Roadmap for Equality between women an

Eastern Dimension: The Relations with the Eastern Neighbours

This thesis sought to answer three questions: The empirical questions were: What has changed in the CFSP after the Eastern enlargement and why has the Eastern Dimension been initiated? The theoretical question was: Which theories provide an adequate explanation to my argument? After the enlargements in 2004 and 2007, Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova became neighbours of the European Union (EU) and Rus

Inflytandet av problemrepresentationer för jämställdhetsintegrering

This thesis uses the ?What's the problem?-approach developed by Carol Lee Bacchi. This approach studies how the problem that a certain policy is supposed to take care of is represented. Each representation will rest upon certain assumptions and will accordingly support certain solutions while other solutions will be considered less suitable to the problem as it is represented. The thesis

"That fluidity out there" - Epiphanies and the Sea in Virginia Woolf's "To the Lighthouse"

Epiphanies constitute an essential aspect of Woolf's fiction, as well as her ideas about fiction. In "To the Lighthouse" they are part of the structure, but also part of the experience of life, how the flux of existence is perceived. This essay focuses not only on the ?little daily miracles? which replace a great revelation, but also on the nature of the chaos, the passing and flowin

What Cosmopolitanism? Exploring Cosmopolitanism in Political Philosphy

During the last decade or so, there has been an uprising for cosmopolitan perspectives in political science. Cosmopolitanism seems to be the new modern approach to global problems. But various conceptions of cosmopolitanism are being used in the debate. Therefore, I look into the different positions to try to distil out some coherence and find different usable sketches when adapting a cosmoplitan

Europa - en plats eller en idé? : En diskursanalys av den europeiska identitetens konstruktion

Today Europe is faced with an identity crisis concerning its borders. Turkey stands at the threshold for an EU-membership while the EU-Commission is trying to formulate what constitutes a European identity. This identity seeking process will determine the future not only for Turkey, but also for immigrants now living in Europe. In this thesis a discourse analysis, underpinned by socialconstructio

Konkurrerande "frames": Förhandlingarna om EU:s tjänstedirektiv

This paper concerns the question of how one can frame a political message. I investigate how a political frame is bound both to the line of argumentation connected with a certain discourse and to the audience closely related to that discourse. I have chosen to study a single case where the policy process was characterized by a framing contest. The case shows how negotiating the new Services Direc

Does the onset of type 1 diabetes in young adults imply increased sickness absence? Results from a Swedish longitudinal study

Few studies on sickness absence, theoretical as well as empirical, in the field of economics specifically focus on the impact of chronic illness. The purpose of the present study is to fill this theoretical gap by providing a theoretical explanation of sickness absence after the onset of a specific chronic illness, namely type 1 diabetes, but also to empirically examine if sickness absence differs

Suppressed ACTH Is Frequently Unrelated to Autonomous Cortisol Secretion in Patients With Adrenal Incidentalomas

Objective: ACTH is considered a weak marker for autonomous cortisol secretion (ACS) in patients with adrenal incidentalomas (AIs). Our aim was to investigate suppressed basal ACTH as a marker of ACS and to elucidate why this criterion is of limited value. Methods: Basal ACTH and cortisol after overnight dexamethasone suppression test (cortisolONDST) were measured in 198 patients with unilateral AI

Assistive technology policy : a position paper from the first global research, innovation, and education on assistive technology (GREAT) summit

Increased awareness, interest and use of assistive technology (AT) presents substantial opportunities for many citizens to become, or continue being, meaningful participants in society. However, there is a significant shortfall between the need for and provision of AT, and this is patterned by a range of social, demographic and structural factors. To seize the opportunity that assistive technology
