Lithium analysis using a double-sided silicon strip detector at LIBAF

Quantification and mapping possibilities of lithium in geological material, by Nuclear Reaction Analysis (NRA), was evaluated at the Lund Ion Beam Analysis Facility (LIBAF). LiF and two Standard Reference Materials, (SRM 610 and SRM 612) were used in the investigation. The main part of the data was obtained at the beam energy 635keV studying the high Q-value reaction 7Li(p, α)4He, but reaction yie

Patients with bicuspid and tricuspid aortic valve exhibit distinct regional microrna signatures in mildly dilated ascending aorta

MicroRNAs are able to modulate gene expression in a range of diseases. We focused on microRNAs as potential contributors to the pathogenesis of ascending aorta (AA) dilatation in patients with stenotic tricuspid (TAV) or bicuspid aortic valve (BAV). Aortic specimens were collected from the ‘concavity’ and the ‘convexity’ of mildly dilated AAs and of normal AAs from heart transplant donors. Aortic

Close encounters in young stellar clusters: implications for planetary systems in the solar neighbourhood

The stars that populate the solar neighbourhood were formed in stellar clusters. Through N-body simulations of these clusters, we measure the rate of close encounters between stars. By monitoring the interaction histories of each star, we investigate the singleton fraction in the solar neighbourhood. A singleton is a star which formed as a single star, has never experienced any close encounters wi

A rare blood group: p phenotype. A rare blood group is usually defined as the absence of a high prevalence antigen or the absence of several antigens within a single blood group system. These individuals may develop clinically significant red cell antibodies to the high incidence red cell antigens they lack. A 33-year-old alloimmunized woman was referred to our center at the 12th week of her third

International Organization of Physical Therapy in Mental Health consensus on physical activity within multidisciplinary rehabilitation programmes for minimising cardio-metabolic risk in patients with schizophrenia

Purpose: The excess cardiovascular morbidity associated with schizophrenia is attributed to an interplay between behavioural (physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, substance abuse), genetic and illness related factors, as well as the effects of antipsychotic treatment. Patients have limited access to physical healthcare with less opportunity for cardiovascular risk prevention and treatment programm

Does organic farming lead to taxonomically more distinct communities compared to conventional farming?

Abstract Agricultural intensification is causing a worldwide loss in biodiversity, and organic farming has been proposed as a valid method for preserving it. Studies have shown that organic farming increases species abundances, however the taxonomic breadth of communities may be an additional important biodiversity measure which is not affected by study intensity or sample size. The aim of this s

Investigating The Role Of Tumour Suppressor Genes In Salamander Regeneration And Tumorigenesis Through CRISPR Screens

Looking At Tumour Suppressor Genes Of A Tumour Resistant Species Salamanders like Pleurodeles waltl are tailed amphibians capable of regenerating complex structures like entire organs and limbs. Therefore, they are great models to study the process of regeneration. Regeneration involves cells of the injured tissue going through a lot of growth, division, and migration to reconstruct the original

Effects of soil temperature on Sphagnum moss litter quality and decomposition in a subarctic environment

High latitude peatlands play a significant role in global soil carbon budgets, attributed to the slow decomposition rate of Sphagnum mosses that facilitates carbon sequestration through the build-up of peat. As climate change is predicted to increase soil temperatures and decomposition rates of organic matter, studying environmental and intraspecific mechanisms that controls decay resistance of Sp

Identifying epigenetic and mutational barriers limiting cancer cell reprogramming into dendritic cells

Cracking the Code: Why Cancer Cells Struggle to Transform into Antigen-Presenting Dendritic Cells Since cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, the possibility of converting cancer cells into other cell types represents an interesting approach to fighting cancer. Transforming cancer cells into immune cells by reprogramming their cell identity into immune cells could be a smart way

French as cL2, 2L1 and L1 in pre-school children

Compared to monolingual first language acquisition (L1) and adult second language acquisition (aL2), relatively little research has been done on child second language acquisition (cL2). This is an unsatisfactory situation from both a practical and a theoretical point of view. The present study concerns cL2 acquisition of French and poses the question whether cL2 acquisition bears closer resemblanc

Resonant photoemission of N2O on Ir(110)

The adsorption of N2O on Ir(110) was investigated with high-resolution resonant photoemission at 135 K. The results obtained show evidence of molecular adsorption of N2O, along with some dissociation. It is found that the nitrogen photoemission spectra measured at the terminal and central nitrogen energy positions of the N2O/Ir(110) system are equivalent to those of N2O in the gas phase. In contra

High flux composite PTMSP-silica nanohybrid membranes for the pervaporation of ethanol/water mixtures

Silica-filled poly(1-trimethylsilyl-1-propyne) (PTMSP) layers were successfully applied for the first time on top of ultrafiltration support membranes and applied in the pervaporative separation of ethanol/water mixtures. Reduction of the thickness of the separating PTMSP top layer and addition of hydrophobic silica particles resulted in a clear flux increase as compared to dense PTMSP membranes.

A comparison between flexible electrogoniometers, inclinometers and three-dimensional video analysis system for recording neck movement

This study compared neck range of movement recording using three different methods goniometers (EGM), inclinometers (INC) and a three-dimensional video analysis system (IMG) in simultaneous and synchronized data collection. Twelve females performed neck flexion-extension, lateral flexion, rotation and circumduction. The differences between EGM, INC, and IMG were calculated sample by sample. For fl

Prospective evaluation of glutamine and phospholipids levels in first degree relatives of patients with Type 1 Diabetes from a multiethnic population.

A dysregulation in the metabolism of lipids may be an early marker of autoimmunity in Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). It would be of general importance to identify metabolic patterns that would predict the risk for T1D later in life. The aim of this study was to perform a prospective evaluation of glutamine and phospholipids levels in Brazilian first degree relatives (FDR) of patients with T1D in a mean in

High-spin structure beyond band termination in Er-157

The angular-momentum induced transition from a deformed state of collective rotation to a noncollective configuration has been studied. In Er-157 this transition manifests itself as favored band termination near I=45 (h) over bar. The feeding of these band terminating states has been investigated for the first time using the Gammasphere spectrometer. Many weakly populated states lying at high exci

Probing doubly excited ionic states of N-2(+) via a triple excitation above the N 1s threshold in the N-2 molecule

Angle-resolved resonant Auger-electron spectroscopy has been carried out on the nitrogen molecule at selected photon energies around 419 eV, where a 1s core electron and two valence electrons are promoted into the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital 1pi(g). Significant enhancement of a specific band, which cannot be disentangled in direct photoionization, is observed at a binding energy of 37.6 eV

Low levels of IgM antibodies against phosphorylcholine-A potential risk marker for ischemic stroke in men

Background: Natural antibodies specific for phosphorylcholine (anti-PC) have been implicated as protective factors in atherosclerosis. We herein determined the relationship between IgM anti-PC and incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Methods: We studied 349 incident cases (200 men) of first events of CVD (coronary heart disease (CHD; n = 203 or ischemic stroke; n = 146) and 693 age- and sex-

Confirming the three-factor structure of the Disgust Scale-Revised in eight countries

The current study evaluates the factor structure of the Disgust Scale-Revised (DS-R) in eight countries: Australia, Brazil, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the United States (N = 2,606). Confirmatory factor analysis is used to compare two different models of the DS-R and to investigate the invariance of the factor structure of the DS-R across countries and gender. A three-facto
