Interacting Giants and Compact Stars

This thesis is based on four papers dealing with various aspects of interactions in binary stars. Interactions between stars occur at nearly all stages of their evolution and can take many forms. For example, stars may lose material to a binary companion, merge, interact with groups of other stars in star clusters and explode in binary systems, among other interactions. Taking back the power of food

Talking about the revolution, it sounds like a whisper, but I think even Tracy feels it’s time to scream it from the rooftops; I am fed up of sitting in the bistro of this ever speeding train of consumption, racking up a tab that our coming generations will have to pay for with their future. I want to jump off and run in another direction towards a more beautiful existence. In my life everything h

The Judge Under Pressure : Fostering Objectivity by Abandoning the Myth of Dispassion

The independence of the judiciary is challenged in several ways. One is the populist narrative of the judges as elitist, another is artificial intelligence being introduced into judicial evaluation. The traditional ideal of positivistic objectivity underpins both these narratives, even though research has shown that emotions are a crucial part of rational decision making. By scrutinising legal dec

Neurocognitive bases for the functional role of gaze direction during episodic memory retrieval

Previous research has established that when engaged in episodic memory retrieval, people frequently look at locations associated with the sought-after memory trace, even if those locations no longer contain any information. While it has been further demonstrated that gaze positions showing compatibility between encoding and retrieval increase the likelihood of successful remembering (Johansson &amPrevious research has established that when engaged in episodic memory retrieval, people frequently look at locations associated with the sought-after memory trace, even if those locations no longer contain any information. Random Surfaces with Ising Spins

Bosonic strings can be discretized in terms of dynamically triangulatedrandom surfaces. We investigate the possibility of introducing fermionicdegrees of freedom on the surface in terms of Ising spins, which in twodimensions correspond to Majorana fermions. Critical properties of themodel are estimated using finite-size scaling methods.

A digital tool for life cycle assessment in construction projects

The building and construction industry is responsible for around 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions, driving the urgent need for new regulations. As such, the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology has become fundamental for evaluating environmental impacts. Despite the need for digital tools to support environmental performance evaluations, the lack of guidance on developing such tools hinde

However, they have struggled to gain recognition as recycling providers and have suffered from legislation criminalizing their source of livelihood. 2022 marks a shift where a new regulation was adopted, allowing waste pickers

Anaerobic digestion of crop and waste biomass: Impact of feedstock characteristics on process performance

Popular Abstract in English In an ever energy hungry world and given the concerns about global warming, depleting reserves of fossil fuels and growing fuel prices, there is an urgent need for alternative renewable energy sources. Biogas production through anaerobic digestion in sync with other bio energy production technologies could replace or partially replace fossil fuels and hence curb greenhoAnaerobic digestion provides an array of positive environmental benefits such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, replacing mineral fertilizers, producing renewable energy and treating waste. However, pitfalls in anaerobic digestion such as poor methane yields, process instability, process failure and regional shortages of feedstock have limited the full exploitation of the anaerobic digestion p

Word embeddings on ideology and issues from Swedish parliamentarians’ motions : a comparative approach

Quantitative analysis of large-scale political text data in the form of word embeddings has great potential for systematising differences between political parties. We examine the differences between embeddings obtained from speakers from the two competitors for the PM position in Sweden (Social Democrats and Moderates) over a 30-year period. The goal is to compare how off-the-shelf general pre-tr
