Tissue expansion 1984-1999: A 15-year review.
We assessed all patients who underwent tissue expansion, excluding breast reconstructions, between 1984 and 1999. A total of 237 patients had 257 expansions, normally for distorted scars, 202 of 257 cases (79%). Their mean age was 27 (range 7- 67) years, most being women, 149 of 237 (63%). The mean duration of expansion was 16 weeks (range 0.4-118). The most common site was the skull (61/257). Pro
Exciting Isomers from the First Stopped-beam RISING Campaign
First results are reported from a major new initiative of experiments, which focus on nuclear structure studies at extreme isospin values by means of isomer spectroscopy. The experiments represent the first part of the so-called stopped-beam campaign within the Rare ISotope INvestigations at GSI (RISING) project. Time-correlated gamma decays from individually identified nuclear species have been m
Delineating the specificity of an IgE-encoding transcriptome.
Background Although much is known about the reactivity of polyclonal populations of antibodies targeting the wide array of allergens produced by timothy (Phleum pratense) and other grass species, little is known about the finer details at the level of individual antibody specificities. Objective We sought to investigate the IgE repertoire as it occurs in a patient with grass pollen allergy. Meth
Phase II studies on docetaxel alone every third week, or weekly in combination with gemcitabine in patients with primary locally advanced, metastatic, or recurrent esophageal cancer
Background The purpose of these studies was to compare efficacy and toxicity of docetaxel alone with the combination of gemcitabine and docetaxel for treatment of metastatic esophageal carcinoma. Patients and methods These studies enrolled patients with histopathologically verified squamous cell carcinoma or adenocarcinoma of the esophagus or cardia. Between March 1997 and June 1999, 52 patients w
Sensitization and exposure to pet allergens in asthmatics versus non-asthmatics with allergic rhinitis
In sensitized subjects with allergic rhinitis (AR) or asthma, allergen exposure provokes symptoms. Among non-asthmatics with AR, an association between allergen sensitization, pollen season and lower airway inflammation has been demonstrated. Our aims were to compare AR and asthma with regard to patterns of allergen sensitization, the degree of airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) and levels of exhale
Comparison of 'pattern recognition' and logistic regression models for discrimination between benign and malignant pelvic masses: a prospective cross validation
OBJECTIVES: To test prospectively the diagnostic performance of two logistic regression models for calculation of individual risk of malignancy in adnexal tumors (the 'Tailor model' and the 'Timmerman model'), and to compare them to that of 'pattern recognition' (subjective evaluation of the gray-scale ultrasound image and color Doppler ultrasound examination). DESIGN: Consecutive women with a pel
Using an Observer to Transform Linear Systems into Strictly Positive Real Systems
In this note, we study the extension of the class of linear time invariant plants that may be transformed into SPR systems introducing an observer. It is shown that for open loop stable systems a cascaded observer achieves the result. For open loop unstable systems an observer-based feedback is required to succeed. In general any stabilizable and observable system may be transformed into an SPR sy

Kluskap - as local culture hero and global green warrior: Different narrative contexts for the Canadian Mi’kmaq culture hero
The first stories about Kluskap, the culture hero of the Mi’kmaq in eastern Canada, were written down at the end of the 19th century. The romantic epoch and the environmental failures of industrialism had generated a growing interest for the “Indian”, who seemed to inherit the continent’s authentic “poetry of the Volk” and harbour deep wisdom about nature. The first written literature about Kluska
Upp och hoppa då, feminister
This article argues against lesbophobia in Swedish feminist politics and theory and opens up a perspective for feminist solidarity.
Stimulation of id1 expression by bone morphogenetic protein is sufficient and necessary for bone morphogenetic protein-induced activation of endothelial cells.
Background— Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are multifunctional proteins that regulate the proliferation, differentiation, and migration of a large variety of cell types. Like other members of the transforming growth factor-ß family, BMPs elicit their cellular effects through activating specific combinations of type I and type II serine/threonine kinase receptors and their downstream effector p

Knowledge discovery in virtual community texts: Clustering virtual communities
Automatic knowledge discovery from texts (KDT) is proving to be a promising method for businesses today to deal with the overload of textual information. In this paper, we first explore the possibilities for KDT to enhance communication in virtual communities, and then we present a practical case study with real-life Internet data. The problem in the case study is to manage the very successful vir

Mechanisms of salt frost scaling on portland cement-bound materials: studies and hypothesis
A hypothesis regarding the mechanism causing salt frost scaling on Portland cement-bound materials is described. It is assumed that deterioration is due to osmotic micro ice body growth, as has been previously proposed for frost deterioration of moisture-isolated specimens of cement-bound materials. In moisture-isolated specimens, this ice body growth stops when the micro structure is drained to a
CFD Modeling of Turbulent Flows in Industrial Applications with Emphasis on Premixed Combustion in Gas Turbines
Increasing restrictions on hazardous emissions combined with demands for good profitability from the operators in the energy market have contributed strongly to the development of innovations in which the emphasis is on low emissions and high efficiency. For gas turbine-based power plants, emission of NOx in particular is governed by stringent legislation. To meet these restrictions, most of the m
Planning for good indoor lighting
Urbanisation and industrialisation has led people spending more time indoors than ever before. Many buildings have small windows and contain large windowless spaces. Therefore, the natural daylight outdoors has to be replaced by light from artificial sources. If light affected vision only, this situation would be difficult enough. Since light also affects both well-being and health, the design of
Point interactions: PT-Hermiticity and reality of the spectrum
General point interactions for the second derivative operator in one dimension are studied. In particular, cal PT-self-adjoint point interactions with the support at the origin and at points +/-l are considered. The spectrum of such non-Hermitian operators is investigated and conditions when the spectrum is pure real are presented. The results are compared with those for standard self-adjoint poin
