The Nature of the Metal-Rich Thick Disk

We have traced the Galactic thick disk to its, to date, highest metallicities. Based on high-resolution spectroscopic observations of 187 F and G dwarf stars that kinematically can be associated either with the thin disk (60 stars) or with the thick disk (127 stars), we find that the thick disk stars reach at least solar metallicities, and maybe even higher. This finding is independent of the U_LS

Laser control of atoms and molecules

Rather different problems can be lumped together under the general term 'laser control of atoms and molecules'. They include the laser selection of atomic and molecular velocities for the purpose of Doppler-free spectroscopy, laser control of the position and velocity of atoms (i.e. laser trapping and cooling of atoms), and laser control of atomic and molecular processes (ionization, dissociation)

The -145 km/s Absorption System of Eta Carinae

With the STIS E230H mode (R 118,000), we have identified about twentyabsorption components in line of sight from Eta Carinae. Two components, one at -513 km/s and another at -145 km/s, are quite different incharacter from the others, mostly at intermediate velocities (Seeadjacent posters by T. Gull and A. Danks). The -145 km/s component issignificantly wider in fwhm, is seen in many more species, a

The solar neighborhood age-metallicity relation - Does it exist?

We test the hypothesis that the spread in the age-metallicity plot of the solar neighborhood is due to a mixture of stars belonging to kinematically different sub-populations of the Galactic disk, i.e., the thin and the thick disk. We use a kinematic subsample of similar to 600 stars from a sample of similar to 6000 dwarf and subgiant stars from the Hipparcos catalog. All of these stars have a ful

Ulysses Dust Detection System V3.1

This data set contains the data from the Ulysses dust detector system (UDDS) from start of mission through the end of mission, 1990-2007. (As the dust detector was turned off after Nov. 30, 2007, this is the last date for which UDDS data is recorded.) Included are the dust impact data, noise data, laboratory calibration data, and location and orientation of the spacecraft and instrument.
