We assessed blood pressure (BP) trends in patients with type 2 diabetes from a national diabetes register using three cross-sectional samples (aged 30-85 years) in 2005, 2007 and 2009, and in patients from 2005 followed individually until 2009. The prevalence of hypertension was 87% among all 180 369 patients in 2009, although lower in subgroups with ages 30-39, 40-49 and 50-59 years: 40%, 60% and

AIMS: Despite a wealth of clinical trial data supporting use of the premixed insulin analogue, biphasic insulin aspart 30 (BIAsp 30) in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), there is limited documentation of its use in primary care-based clinical practice.METHODS: An observational study investigating the safety and efficacy of BIAsp 30 in routine clinical practice was conducted. Patien

OBJECTIVE: To investigate hand problems in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and to explore consequences on the ability to perform daily activities. METHODS: One hundred nine patients with SLE completed a questionnaire assessing hand problems in terms of deficits in body structures, e.g., joints, and body functions including pain, grip force, and other physiologic functions of the h

Aims Patients with a history of atrial fibrillation (AF) have previously been shown to have altered atrial conduction, as seen non-invasively using signal-averaged P-wave analysis. However, little is known about the P-wave morphology in patients in the early phases of AF with structurally normal hearts. Methods and results Thirty-six patients with lone AF were included before the age of 40 years (

The polyamines are polycationic compounds essential for cellular proliferation and transformation. In addition to a well-defined biosynthesis pathway, polyamines are internalized into cells by as yet incompletely defined mechanisms. Numerous reports have shown that efficient polyamine uptake depends on the presence of polyanionic, cell surface-associated heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs). In t

For the modified Hughes procedure, a tarsoconjunctival flap from the upper eyelid is used to reconstruct large, full-thickness, lower eyelid defects. The conjunctival pedicle is divided once vascularization is deemed to be adequate. The importance of maintaining a flap pedicle to ensure adequate perfusion of the graft has been questioned. The purpose of the study was to investigate the microvascul

In the present study, we hypothesized that changes in perfusion pressure result in altered expression of mRNA and protein encoding for the ETA-, ETB-, AT1- and AT2-receptors in rat mesenteric vessels. Segments of the rat mesenteric artery were cannulated with glass micropipettes, pressurized and luminally perfused in a perfusion chamber. After either exposure to no ("organ culture" (0 mmHg)), norm

Understanding how cells polarize and coordinate tubulogenesis during organ formation is a central question in biology. Tubulogenesis often coincides with cell-lineage specification during organ development. Hence, an elementary question is whether these two processes are independently controlled, or whether proper cell specification depends on formation of tubes. To address these fundamental quest

OBJECTIVE: Statistical analysis is ubiquitous in medical research, but fundamental statistical principles are not always well understood, which has negative effects for both authors and readers of scientific papers. The purpose of this brief review is to provide a methodological overview on populations, samples, analysis units and sampling uncertainty to facilitate an increased understanding of st

In this study, cell nuclei from aneuploid breast cancer samples were sorted with respect to DNA content into pure diploid and aneuploid fractions using flow cytometry. The nuclear proteins were then separated by one-dimensional gel electrophoresis (1D-PAGE) and differences in protein expression patterns, between diploid and aneuploid nuclei from the same tumours, were compared. Using a combination

Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is an inducible enzyme that drives inflammation and is the therapeutic target for widely used nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). However, COX-2 is also constitutively expressed, in the absence of overt inflammation, with a specific tissue distribution that includes the kidney, gastrointestinal tract, brain, and thymus. Constitutive COX-2 expression is therapeuti

In this retrospective epidemiologic study, we present pneumococcal carriage data from 109 Swedish day care centers over a period of 10 years. Aspects of season, age, personnel and group size were studied. We found a significant seasonal variation in pneumococcal carriage. Group size was a significant risk factor for pneumococcal carriage. Pneumococcal carriage was 4.5 % in personnel.

Ductile shear zones associated with emplacement of high-pressure nappes are key features to resolve exhumation mechanisms. The Eastern Segment of the Sveconorwegian orogen hosts an eclogite-bearing fold nappe, whose basal shear zone shows structures associated with emplacement of the eclogite-bearing nappe and decompression under high to intermediate pressure granulite and upper amphibolite fades

Risk-taking can be either adaptive or maladaptive depending on the context, but maladaptive risk-taking sometimes has serious consequences. Understanding how self-control and other aspects of personality are related to risk-taking is important, as self-control can be improved through training. We examined how the regulative temperamental trait Activation control interacts with the reactive traits

Recent advances in experimental plant biology have led to an increased potential to investigate plant development at a systems level. The emerging research field of Computational Morphodynamics has the aim to lead this development by combining dynamic spatial experimental data with computational models of molecular networks, growth, and mechanics in a multicellular context. The increased number of

We present the calculation of the self-energy of the isolated hydrogen atom within the GW approximation starting from the noninteracting Green's function constructed from the exact wave functions of the hydrogen atom. The error in the electron removal energy of the 1s state is found to be about 0.02 eV, which is much smaller than what one would expect. This small error is explained by the cancella

A unique anti-inflammatory property of IgG, independent of antigen specificity, is described. IgG with modification of the heavy-chain glycan on asparagine 297 by the streptococcal enzyme endo-beta-N-acetylglucosaminidase (EndoS) induced a dominant suppression of immune complex (IC)-mediated inflammation, such as arthritis, through destabilization of local ICs by fragment crystallizable-fragment c

Engineered nanoparticles have been under increasing scrutiny in recent years. High aspect ratio nanoparticles such as carbon nanotubes and nanowires have raised safety concerns due to their geometrical similarity to asbestos fibers. III-V epitaxial semiconductor nanowires are expected to be utilized in devices such as LEDs and solar cells and will thus be available to the public. In addition, clea

We present a synthesis of the results of a multiproxy, multisite, palaeoecological study of Holocene environmental change in Kamchatka, Far East Russia, details of which are presented elsewhere in the volume. We summarise the results of the analyses of pollen, diatom, chironomid, and testate amoebae assemblages, together with stable isotopes of oxygen and carbon, and sediment characteristics from
