Collectivity without plasma in hadronic collisions

We present a microscopic model for collective effects in high multiplicity proton–proton collisions, where multiple partonic subcollisions give rise to a dense system of strings. From lattice calculations we know that QCD strings are transversely extended, and we argue that this should result in a transverse pressure and expansion, similar to the flow in a deconfined plasma. The model is implement

Small-x dipole evolution beyond the large-N-c limit

We present a method to include colour-suppressed effects in the Mueller dipole picture. The model consistently includes saturation effects both in the evolution of dipoles and in the interactions of dipoles with a target in a frame-independent way. When implemented in a Monte Carlo simulation together with our previous model of energy-momentum conservation and a simple dipole description of initia

Multiple collisions and final state properties

In the collinear factorization scheme the minijet cross section diverges for small k [perpendicular]. In the k[perpendicular]-factorization formalism this divergence is avoided, and it is possible to calculate the number of minijets and the E[perpendicular]-flow exclusively from HERA data, without reliance on a phenomenological soft cutoff. The hadron multiplicity is very sensitive to non-perturba

Contribution of quantum chromodynamics condensates to the operator product expansion of Green functions of chiral currents

In this paper, the basic properties of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) condensates are presented, together with theirs relation to the operator product expansion (OPE) and the two-point and three-point Green functions constructed of chiral currents. Next, our newest results for the contribution of the QCD condensates with dimension D < 6 to the Green functions calculated within the framework of χPT/R

Stress testing the vector-boson-fusion approximation in multijet final states

We consider electroweak Higgs plus three jets production at NLO QCD beyond strict VBF acceptance cuts. We investigate, for the first time, how accurate the VBF approximation is in these regions and within perturbative uncertainties by a detailed comparison of full and approximate calculations. We find that a rapidity gap between the tagging jets guarantees a good approximation, while an invariant

The PDF4LHC Working Group Interim Recommendations

This note provides an interim summary of the current recommendations of thePDF4LHC working group for the use of parton distribution functions (PDFs)and of PDF uncertainties at the LHC, for cross section and cross section uncer-tainty calculations. It also contains a succinct user guideto the computation ofPDFs, uncertainties and correlations using available PDF sets.A companion note (the PDF4LHC W

Randall-Sundrum model with a dilaton field at finite temperature

We find exact finite temperature solutions to d=5 Einstein-dilaton gravity with black branes and a Randall-Sundrum 3-brane. We show that there exists a unique generating superpotential for these models. The location of the black brane and the associated Hawking temperature depend on the value of the 3-brane tension, while other parameters are held fixed. The thermodynamics of these solutions are p

Effective field theories in nuclear particle and atomic physics

These are the proceedings of the workshop on ``Effective Field Theories in Nuclear, Particle and Atomic Physics'' held at the Physikzentrum Bad Honnef of the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft, Bad Honnef, Germany from December 13 to 17, 2005. The workshop concentrated on Effective Field Theory in many contexts. A first part was concerned with Chiral Perturbation Theory in its various settings an

Simulation of vector boson plus many jet final states at the high luminosity LHC

We present a novel event-generation framework for the efficient simulation of vector boson plus multijet backgrounds at the high-luminosity LHC and at possible future hadron colliders. Message passing interface parallelization of parton-level and particle-level event generation and storage of parton-level event information using the HDF5 data format allow us to obtain leading-order merged Monte Ca

GalaxeIn this show we travel from the Earth to the edge of the Universe, discovering planets, stars and galaxies along the way.

Uncertainties on central exclusive scalar luminosities from the unintegrated gluon distributions.

In a previous report we used the Linked Dipole Chain model unintegrated gluon densities to investigate the uncertainties in the predictions for central exclusive production of scalars at hadron colliders. Here we expand this investigation by also looking at other parameterizations of the unintegrated gluon density, and look in more detail on the behavior of these at small k(<^>). We confirm our co

Bioarray software environment: a platform for comprehensive management and analysis of microarray data

The microarray technique requires the organization and analysis of vast amounts of data. These data include information about the samples hybridized, the hybridization images and their extracted data matrices, and information about the physical array, the features and reporter molecules. We present a web-based customizable bioinformatics solution called BioArray Software Environment (BASE) for the

Anti-Icing in Gas Turbines

This thesis gives a thorough description of the icing mechanisms in gas turbines, the underlying physics of ice and ice types that can form in gas turbines. The primary intention of this thesis is to investigate the icing condition regions leading to ice formation in gas turbines. The icing problem in gas turbines is explained in detail in this thesis. The different ice types, icing mechanism

PHOREST: a web-based tool for comparative analyses of expressed sequence tag data

Comparative analysis of expressed sequence tags is becoming an important tool in molecular ecology for comparing gene expression in organisms grown in certain environments. Additionally, expressed sequence tag database information can be used for the construction of DNA microarrays and for the detection of single nucleotide polymorphisms. For such applications, we present PHOREST, a web-based tool

We have eight planets, quite a few dwarf planets and a lot of asteroids and comets orbiting the Sun. In the planetarium we can learn about the Earth and the Moon, the seasons and the stars. We explore the planets of the solar system, learn about the constellations and discover that just because it is called "a shooting star" does not mean that stars can fall from the skies.

Combining astrometric and radial velocity data for exoplanet detection

The Gaia satellite will be provide astrometry with micro-arcsecond accuracy. This will allow for the determination of the orbital elements of exoplanets with measurable astrometric signature. Astrometry alone is not be able to disentangle an ambiguity in the orientation of planetary orbits, just as radial velocity is only able to give the mass of orbiting planets combined with multiplicat

A spectral study of Te V from MCDHF calculations

State-of-the-art multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculations for Te V have been performed and energies, LS-compositions, radiative lifetimes and Lande gJ-factors for 51 odd and even parity states are presented. In addition, predictions on transition rates and oscillator strengths for a multitude of transitions between these states are reported for the first time. To describe the atomic syst

Solar Wind Variations Related to Fluctuations of the North Atlantic Oscillation

A study on a possible solar wind interaction with the North AtlanticOscillation (NAO) is performed. Results are presented suggesting arelationship between the NAO index and the electric field strength E ofthe solar wind. A possible scenario for the suggested interaction isthat an electromagnetic disturbance is generated by the solar wind inthe global electric circuit of the ionosphere. This distur
