GalaxeIn this show we travel from the Earth to the edge of the Universe, discovering planets, stars and galaxies along the way.

A spectral study of Te V from MCDHF calculations

State-of-the-art multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculations for Te V have been performed and energies, LS-compositions, radiative lifetimes and Lande gJ-factors for 51 odd and even parity states are presented. In addition, predictions on transition rates and oscillator strengths for a multitude of transitions between these states are reported for the first time. To describe the atomic syst

SASI07

SASI07: Circular Economy – Managing Materials Sustainably The SASI07 Circular Economy – Managing Materials Sustainably an online course focusing on Circular Economy (CE); what CE is and how its emergence can be facilitated as the result of choices and strategies by suppliers, designers, businesses, policymakers, and all of us as consumers. How can we create a circular economy through sustainable m

Solar Wind Variations Related to Fluctuations of the North Atlantic Oscillation

A study on a possible solar wind interaction with the North AtlanticOscillation (NAO) is performed. Results are presented suggesting arelationship between the NAO index and the electric field strength E ofthe solar wind. A possible scenario for the suggested interaction isthat an electromagnetic disturbance is generated by the solar wind inthe global electric circuit of the ionosphere. This distur

Getting a grip on proteomics data - Proteomics Data Collection (ProDaC)

In proteomics, rapid developments in instrumentation led to the acquisition of increasingly large data sets. Correspondingly, ProDaC was founded in 2006 as a Coordination Action project within the 6th European Union Framework Programme to support data sharing and community-wide data collection. The objectives of ProDaC were the development of documentation and storage standards, setup of a standar

Variational approach to correlations in charged polymers

A deterministic algorithm for calculating polymer properties is presented. It is based on a variational approach where the bond and Coulomb potentials are approximated by a quadratic trial energy. The parameters which describe average atom positions and Gaussian fluctuations, are the solutions of matrix equations. By a judicious choice of parameter representations and the use of incremental matrix

Investigation of Impact Parameter Profiles in Multi-Parton Interactions

För The purpose of this thesis was to implement an alternative method to calculate the overlap function, which describe to what extent two protons overlap with each other spatially, into PYTHIA8 in order to determine how it affected the average number of multiparton interactions. The new overlap function is based on an explicit impact parameter picture, whereas PYTHIA8s overlap function uses an implic

Coupled folding-binding versus docking: A lattice model study

Using a simple hydrophobic/polar protein model, we perform a Monte Carlo study of the thermodynamics and kinetics of binding to a target structure for two closely related sequences, one of which has a unique folded state while the other is unstructured. We obtain significant differences in their binding behavior. The stable sequence has rigid docking as its preferred binding mode, while the unstru

Strangeness enhancement across collision systems without a plasma

We present novel rope hadronization results for strange hadron enhancement in pp, pPb, and PbPb collisions using PYTHIA/Angantyr at LHC energies. With the rope model for string fragmentation, we find that the strangeness and baryon enhancement has a coherent increase across all collision systems as a function of average charged central multiplicity, in qualitative agreement with LHC data. In AA co

Past ocean conditions give clues to marine environmental changes

This article is over 5 years old, and the information may therefore be outdated. How can previous warm periods in the ocean help us better understand the ongoing climate change? PhD student Sha Ni defends her dissertation at CEC this week with fossil findings that can improve the knowledge of the current global warming. Congratulations on your dissertation coming up! How would you describe your re

Random graphs with hidden color

We propose and investigate a unifying class of sparse random graph models, based on a hidden coloring of edge-vertex incidences, extending an existing approach, random graphs with a given degree distribution, in a way that admits a nontrivial correlation structure in the resulting graphs. The approach unifies a number of existing random graph ensembles within a common general formalism, and allows

Optoelectronic implementation of multilayer neural networks in a single photorefractive crystal

We present a novel, versatile optoelectronic neural network architecture for implementing supervised learning algorithms in photorefractive materials. The system is based on spatial multiplexing rather than the more commonly used angular multiplexing of the interconnect gratings. This simple, single-crystal architecture implements a variety of multilayer supervised learning algorithms including me

Detailed characterization of plasmids carrying resistance genes using optical DNA mapping

We present an assay, based on optical DNA mapping in nanochannels that is capable of characterizing the plasmid content of bacterial isolates resistant to antibiotics in a fast an detailed way. In a single experiment we determine the number of different plasmids in each sample, their size, as well as a barcode that can be used for plasmid identification and tracing. In addition we demonstrate that

An information-based neural approach to constraint satisfaction

A novel artificial neural network approach to constraint satisfaction problems is presented. Based on information-theoretical considerations, it differs from a conventional mean-field approach in the form of the resulting free energy. The method, implemented as an annealing algorithm, is numerically explored on a testbed of K-SAT problems. The performance shows a dramatic improvement over that of

Sequence design in coarse-grained protein models

Designing amino acid sequences that are stable in a given target structure amounts to maximizing a conditional probability. A straightforward approach to accomplish this is a nested Monte Carlo where the conformation space is explored over and over again for different fixed sequences. In this paper we discuss an alternative Monte Carlo approach, multisequence design, where conformation and sequenc
