Encounter distribution of two random walkers on a finite one-dimensional interval

We analyse the first-passage properties of two random walkers confined to a finite one-dimensional domain. For the case of absorbing boundaries at the endpoints of the interval, we derive the probability that the two particles meet before either one of them becomes absorbed at one of the boundaries. For the case of reflecting boundaries, we obtain the mean first encounter time of the two particles

Properties of random graphs with hidden color

We investigate in some detail a recently suggested general class of ensembles of sparse undirected random graphs based on a hidden stub coloring, with or without the restriction to nondegenerate graphs. The calculability of local and global structural properties of graphs from the resulting ensembles is demonstrated. Cluster size statistics are derived with generating function techniques, yielding

QCD-supression by black hole production at the LHC

Possible consequences of the production of small black holes at the LHC for different scenarios with large extra dimensions are investigated. The effects from black hole production on some standard jet observables are examined, concentrating on the reduction of the QCD cross section. It is found that black hole production of partons interacting on a short enough distance indeed seem to generate a

Random graph models with hidden color

We demonstrate how to generalize two of the most well-known random graph models, the classic random graph, and random graphs with a given degree distribution, by the introduction of hidden variables in the form of extra degrees of freedom, color, applied to vertices or stubs (half-edges). The color is assumed unobservable, but is allowed to affect edge probabilities. This serves as a convenient me

Unintegrated parton density functions

An overview on activities to determine unintegrated parton density functions is given and the concept and need for unintegrated PDFs is discussed. It is also argued that it is important to reformulate perturbative QCD results in terms of fully unintegrated parton densities, differential in all components of the parton momentum. Also the need for non-linear BFKL evolution is discussed and results u

Modeling plant growth and pattern formation.

Plants continue to grow and generate new organs in symmetric patterns throughout their lives. This development requires an interconnected regulation of genes, hormones, and anisotropic growth, which in part is guided by environmental cues. Recently, several studies have used a combination of experiments and mathematical modeling to elucidate the mechanisms behind different growth and molecular pat

Uncertainty of oscillator strengths derived from lifetimes and branching fractions

A widely used method for determination of transition probabilities and oscillator strengths is based on measurements of branching fractions and radiative lifetimes. In the present work the different sources of uncertainty in branching fraction measurements using Fourier transform spectroscopy and lifetime measurements using laser induced fluorescence are discussed. A detailed description is presen

Dynamics of critical fluctuations : Theory – phenomenology – heavy-ion collisions

This report summarizes the presentations and discussions during the Rapid Reaction Task Force “Dynamics of critical fluctuations: Theory – phenomenology – heavy-ion collisions”, which was organized by the ExtreMe Matter Institute EMMI and held at GSI, Darmstadt, Germany in April 2019. We address the current understanding of the dynamics of critical fluctuations in QCD and their measurement in heav

Automated Tracing of Adsorbed DNA Molecules with Curvature Using B-Splines

Barcoding is a coarse-grained optical DNA sequencing method, where DNA molecules are stained with fluorescent dyes to create sequence-dependent patterns similar to barcodes. For DNA adsorbed onto a glass surface, we need to be able to trace out these molecules for barcode extraction. We show that B-splines can be used to approximate the shape of adsorbed DNA molecules with curvature and present a

Correcting biological infrared spectroscopy data for atmospheric gases and Mie scattering

Infrared absorption microscopy is a powerful chemometric tool with a wide variety of applications. It is, however, subject to considerable disturbances from atmospheric gases and scattering effects. As experimental fixes are not always applicable or advisable, data therefore needs to be computationally corrected before any attempt at an interpretation. This work designed, improved and validated se

Determination of low energy constants and testing chiral perturbation theory at order p6 (NNLO)

We present the results of a search for relations between observables that are independent of the Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) Next-to-Next-to-Leading Order (NNLO) Low-Energy Constants (LECs). We have found some relations between observables in ππ, πK scattering and Kl4 decay which have been evaluated numerically using fit 10 in [1] for the NLO LECs. We also show some preliminary results for a

Optimization with Potts Neural Networks

The Potts Neural Network approach to non-binary discrete optimizationproblems is described. It applies to problems that can be described asa set of elementary 'multiple choice' options. Instead of the conventionalbinary (Ising) neurons, mean field Potts neurons, having several availablestates, are used to describe the elementary degrees of freedom of suchproblems. The dynamics consists of iteratin

Emulation of dual-conjugate adaptive optics on an 8-m class telescope

In this article we present a downscaled laboratory setup emulating five natural guide stars, a layered static atmosphere and a 7.5-m aperture telescope equipped with dual-conjugate adaptive optics at a wavelength of 2.2 mum. Three reconstruction alternatives were evaluated; conventional adaptive optics, field-averaged conventional adaptive optics and dual-conjugate adaptive optics. The results wer

Precision lifetime measurement of the 2p P-2(3/2) level for Li-like Ni by beam-foil spectroscopy

In this paper we present a precise and reliable measurement of the 1s(2)2p P-2(3/2) lifetime for Li-like Ni. The measurement was done using the technique of beam-foil spectroscopy employing a beam of 5.9 MeV/u Ni from the UNILAC accelerator at GSI. Special attention was taken concerning satellite blending and foil-ageing problems to justify the reliability of the lifetime value extracted from the

Characterizing the Astrometric Errors in the Gaia Catalogue

Accurate characterization of the errors in the global astrometric solution for Gaia is essential for making optimal use of the catalogue data. We investigate the structure of the covariance between the estimated astrometric parameters by studying the properties of the astrometric least squares solution. We find that astrometric errors can be separated in a star and an attitude part, due to the est
