Audiovisual media and automatic speech recognition : A methodological reflection

The article maps the pitfalls and affordances of automatic speech recognition in the study of audiovisual media and digital history more broadly. Three key topics are emphasized: first, the collaboration between scholars and audiovisual archives and the potential of automatic speech recognition to transform the way scholars navigate and engage with audiovisual media history; second, what knowledge

Foreign Policy Analysis and Securitization

To what extent can securitization theory help us to engage with the puzzles and problems of foreign policy analysis (FPA)? And how can FPA scholarship contribute to the development of the assumptions of securitization? This chapter will probe these questions and attempt to demonstrate that these seemingly disparate research traditions indeed both complement and inform one another. Securitization t

Konstruktionen av gymnasieskolans turismämne

The purpose of the present dissertation is to problematize the choice of content in the subject Tourism in Swedish upper secondary school, and it thereby aims to contribute to a discussion of the subject content and its implications. The dissertation is informed by an international tradition of tourism education research, as well as by research pursued within a Swedish curriculum theory tradition.

An Audio-Haptic Mobile Guide for Non-Visual Navigation and Orientation

People who have visual impairments may have difficulties navigating freely and without personal assistance, and some are even afraid to go out alone. Current navigation devices with non-visual feedback are quite expensive, few, and are in general focused on routing and target finding. We have developed a test prototype application for Android in which a user may scan for map information using the

Human prostatic acid phosphatase: cDNA cloning, gene mapping and protein sequence homology with lysosomal acid phosphatase

The cDNAs encoding human prostatic acid phosphatase were cloned and characterized. The mRNAs contain 3' noncoding regions of heterogeneous sizes 646, 1887 or 1913 nucleotides. A dimer and a monomer of the conserved Alu-repeats are present in the longer 3' noncoding sequences. The complete sequence of 354 amino acids for the mature enzyme was determined by sequencing both cDNA and protein. Human pr

Regional cerebral blood flow in frontal lobe dementia of non-Alzheimer type

Twenty-five out of 26 cases of autopsy-verified frontal lobe degeneration of non-Alzheimer type (FLD) were found to have focal frontal or frontotemporal blood flow reductions involving both hemispheres. The deviant case had an asymmetric frontal pathology only apparent on the right side. Focal reduction of blood flow in the frontal lobes is, however, a common and unspecific flow abnormality found

On the Role of the Research Agenda in Epistemic Change

The standard way of representing an epistemic state in formal philosophy is in terms of a set of sentences, corresponding to the agent's beliefs, and an ordering of those sentences, reflecting how well entrenched they are in the agent's epistemic state. We argue that this wide-spread representational view-a view that we identify as a "Quinean dogma" - is incapable of making certain crucial distinc
