How monocyte-derived macrophages and microglia shape the inflammatory environment of the brain

- A PhD Interview with Juliane Tampé Neuroinflammation plays a key role in how the brain responds to injury, aging, and disease. During her Ph.D. at Lund University’s Lund Stem Cell Center, Juliane Tampé has explored how two types of immune cells, monocytes and microglia, shape these processes across the human lifespan and in conditions such as stroke and Gaucher's disease. On September 18th, she

Erasmus+ doctoral student mobility

As a doctoral student, you have many opportunities to gain international experience during your doctoral studies. You can, for example, collect data for your thesis or participate in staff training. You can also teach at a partner university. Exchanges carried out in Europe (EU/EEA) within the framework of Erasmus+, the EU's education programme, are supported with scholarships. The size of the sch

Nursing Studentsʼ Recounts of Actions and Interactions in Social Relations in Danish Homecare Settings: Perspectives of Immigrant Nursing Students

Encounters between patients in homecare and nursing students are cultural events where students, in principle, are in unknown territory. This study illuminated how nursing students recount (inter)actions in social relations in Danish homecare settings, illustrated by students with a self-appointed immigrant background. The study consisted of semi-structured interviews with eight nursing students.

Prospective teachers’ conceptions of analysis and beliefs about their impending profession

A group of pre-service teachers were studied from two social practices, as teachers and as students. Their perceptions of mathematics concepts and beliefs about the mathematics teacher role were studied through questionnaires, interviews and classroom observations. Three students were selected as cases in this paper where their links between the concepts limits, derivatives, integrals and continui

Adaptive beamformer with recursively updated quadratic constraints

A novel adaptive beamformer employing recursively updated soft constraints for acoustic speech enhancement is proposed. The beamformer operates in a subband structure to allow time-frequency operation for each channel. As such, the processing can be viewed as a combination of weighted spatial and temporal filters. The major benefit of this recursive soft constrained beamformer is that it allows th

Energy-Efficient Redundant Execution for Chip Multiprocessors

Relentless CMOS scaling coupled with lower design tolerances is making ICs increasingly susceptible to wear-out related permanent faults and transient faults, necessitating on-chip fault tolerance in future chip microprocessors (CMPs). In this paper, we describe a power-efficient architecture for redundant execution on chip multiprocessors (CMPs) which when coupled with our per-core dynamic voltag

Learning from informal settlements : the case of Guayaquil

Informal settlements often appear chaotic, seeming perhaps to have emerged without any planning. Evidence suggests however that many slum areas are in fact the result of organized, structured processes carried out with discipline and precision. Formal and informal settlements coexist parallel to one another without significant interaction, and governments and informal planners rarely understand ea

Således är det genomgående In family law, the concept of the best interest of the child is well known. This concept is crucial when courts and social agencies are to take decisions regarding custody, resident and access. What the best interest of the child is gets determined in the individual case, but the risk that the child or another family member gets harmed and the child's need for close and good contact with its p
