Suspect, detainee, or victim? A discourse analytical study of men's vulnerability in Thailand's deep south

The purpose of this thesis is to explore discourses of insecurity, vulnerability and conflict in Thailand’s Deep South. In order to understand how such discourses are shaped by gender ideologies, the study examines how ideas about men and women are articulated, reproduced and challenged in Thai civil society. Special attention is given to the ways in which men and masculinity are constructed withi

Declines amongst breeding Eider Somateria mollissima numbers in the Baltic/Wadden Sea flyway

We report on the status of the Baltic/Wadden Sea flyway Eider population based on trends in breeding and wintering numbers throughout the region, supplemented by changes in the sex ratio and proportion of young Eiders as monitored in the Danish hunting bag. At the flyway scale, total numbers of breeding pairs decreased by 48% during 2000-2009, after relatively stable breeding numbers in 1991-2000.

Shifting foundations: the mechanical cell wall and development.

The cell wall has long been acknowledged as an important physical mediator of growth in plants. Recent experimental and modelling work has brought the importance of cell wall mechanics into the forefront again. These data have challenged existing dogmas that relate cell wall structure to cell/organ growth, that uncouple elasticity from extensibility, and those which treat the cell wall as a passiv

Comparison of Refobacin Bone Cement and Palacos with Gentamicin in total hip arthroplasty: an RSA study with two years follow-up.

Previous experience has demonstrated the importance of testing new bone cement in vivo before widespread clinical use. We performed a consecutive, radiostereometric (RSA) study comparing Refobacin Bone Cement (RBC) to the well proven Palacos with Gentamicin (PWG). According to the manufacturer of RBC it has the equivalent characteristics as PWG, and in vitro tests show good results. The purpose of

Motor Vehicle Speeds: Recommendations for Urban Sustainability

This paper explores how vehicle speeds are related to equitable, environmental and economic sustainability of urban areas. This relationship is manifested primarily through an association between vehicle speeds and road crash casualties, severity of pedestrian crashes, generation of harmful emissions, and relative desirability of neighboring land. Reported research findings describing each of thes

Hänsynstagandets paradoxer : Om äldre, närstående och biståndshandläggare vid flytt till särskilt boende

Many older people express strong preferences to remain in their own housing as long as possible. Due to declining health they may, however, become dependent on others for their daily care, eventually reaching a point where they consider relocation to a residential home. The overall aim of the dissertation is to reveal the process preceding older people’s potential relocation from ordinary housing

Science - policy interfaces in impact assessment procedures

Modelling tools used in impact assessment procedures can be regarded as tools for communication between science and policy. In order to create an integrated system for modelling not only the scientific components have to be in place but also the science/policy interfaces in the assessment procedures have to be identified and their social dynamics understood. To make a system like SEAMLESS Integrate

Photographic Engagements, Belonging and Affective Encounters in Contemporary Photography

The purpose of this thesis is two-fold. Firstly, it is to investigate the notion of belonging in contemporary photography in Turkey and Sweden. Secondly, it aims to contribute to a theoretical approach to contemporary photography that includes its affective, situated and embodied aspects. Engaging is used throughout the thesis as a unifying notion to bring together a range of theoretical perspecti

Untangling Infinite Regress and the Origins of Capability

We argue that strategic management in general—and capability theory in particular—suffers from problems of infinite regress that can be traced to an unsatisfactory specification of initial conditions. We argue, first, that this has led to an overemphasis on path dependence, experience, and history, without sufficient attention on initial conditions: more proximate, decision-oriented punctuation po

Cancer in immigrants as a pointer to the causes of cancer.

The early cancer studies on immigrants, which started to appear some 50 years ago, showed that the incidence in cancers changes to the level of the new host country in one or two generations. These findings were fundamental to the understanding of the environmental etiology of human cancer. Many immigrant groups originate from countries with no cancer registration, and, hence, the immigrant studie

Bioinformatic analysis of protein structure-function relationships: case study of leukocyte elastase (ELA2) missense mutations.

Cyclic and congenital neutropenia are caused by mutations in the human neutrophil elastase (HNE) gene (ELA2), leading to an immunodeficiency characterized by decreased or oscillating levels of neutrophils in the blood. The HNE mutations presumably cause loss of enzyme activity, consequently leading to compromised immune system function. To understand the structural basis for the disease, we implem

Systems analysis: exploring the spectrum of diversity

Complex problem spaces, such as those addressed by knowledge management or systems analysis projects, call for complex methods of inquiry. A phenomenon in contextual analysis means that there is a need to go beyond consensus and recognized ‘best practice’. As part of a complex method, for contextual analysis, inter-analysis may be conducted, in which individuals explore one another’s perspectives

Designing virtual environments for brain injury rehabilitation

Virtual Reality (VR) has shown great potential in various training applications. In the field of cognitive rehabilitation it has been shown that VR technology can become a useful complement to conventional rehabilitation techniques (e.g. Rizzo et al. (2002), Brown et al. (2002) and Kizony et al. (2002)). An important part of a brain injury patient’s rehabilitation process is practicing instrumenta

Establishing sustainability science in higher education institutions: towards an integration of academic development, institutionalization, and stakeholder collaborations

The field of sustainability science aims to understand the complex and dynamic interactions between natural and human systems in order to transform and develop these in a sustainable manner. As sustainability problems cut across diverse academic disciplines, ranging from the natural sciences to the social sciences and humanities, interdisciplinarity has become a central idea to the realm of sustai

Practical HDR texture compression

The use of high dynamic range (HDR) textures in real-time graphics applications can increase realism and provide a more vivid experience. However, the increased bandwidth and storage requirements for uncompressed HDR data can become a major bottleneck. Hence, several recent algorithms for HDR texture compression have been proposed. In this paper, we discuss several practical issues one has to co
