Rhinarium temperature dynamics in domestic dogs

Many mammals have specialized nose-tips with glabrous and often wet skin, called rhinaria. The function of the rhinarium is unknown in most species. Rhinaria differ not only in shape and skin structure, but also in skin temperature. They are considerably colder in carnivorans than in herbivorous artio- and perissodactyls. Domestic dogs are carnivorans and their noses often feel cold, such that the

In this study, the presence of anisakid nematodes in the European eels (Anguilla anguilla L.) was investigated. A total of 30 specimens of eels were caught by local fishermen from the Buyuk Menderes River, Turkey. Nematoda species of Raphidascaris acus was found from eels. This is the first record of R. acus from A. anguilla from Turkish waters. The ribosomal DNA (rDNA) internal transcribed spacer

HPV-16 E2 contributes to induction of HPV-16 late gene expression by inhibiting early polyadenylation.

We provide evidence that the human papillomavirus (HPV) E2 protein regulates HPV late gene expression. High levels of E2 caused a read-through at the early polyadenylation signal pAE into the late region of the HPV genome, thereby inducing expression of L1 and L2 mRNAs. This is a conserved property of E2 of both mucosal and cutaneous HPV types. Induction could be reversed by high levels of HPV-16

A measurement of the ratio of the W and Z cross sections with exactly one associated jet in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV with ATLAS

The ratio of production cross sections of the W and Z bosons with exactly one associated jet is presented as a function of jet transverse momentum threshold. The measurement has been designed to maximise cancellation of experimental and theoretical uncertainties, and is reported both within a particle-level kinematic range corresponding to the detector acceptance and as a total cross-section ratio

Fluctuating lift on a circular cylinder: review and new measurements

Apart from providing some new experimental data the paper reviews previous investigations concerning fluctuating lift acting on a stationary circular cylinder in cross-flow. In particular, effects of Reynolds number in the nominal case of an infinitely long and nonconfined cylinder in a smooth oncoming flow are discussed. The Reynolds number range covered is from about Re = 47 to 2 x 10(5), i.e.,

Game Love : Essays on Play and Affection

What does love have to do with gaming? As games have grown in complexity, they have increasingly included narratives that seek to engage players with love in a variety of ways. While media attention often focuses on violent emotions and behavior in gaming, love has always been central to the experience. We love to play games, we have titles that we love, and sometimes we love too much or love terr

Understanding Admissibility

Lewis' concept of admissibility was introduced as an integral part of his famous Principal Principle; the principle that initial rational/reasonable belief should conform to objective chance unless there is evidence to the contrary. At that time Lewis offered only the rough and ready characterisation that evidence not to the contrary of such dependence is admissible. This, together with some suffi

Developing Computational Tools for Modern Aeroacoustic Research

The thesis presents the author s research on numerical methods for Com-putational Aeroacoustics and the development of computational tools with direct applicability in industry. The designers in the gas-turbine industry, require accurate methods for predicting the onset and the frequencies of dangerous (pressure) oscillations, like the ones which typically occur in Lean Premixed Pre-vaporized (LPP

Spin rotation effects in diffractive electroproduction of heavy quarkonia

In this work we present for the first time the comprehensive study of the Melosh spin rotation effects in diffractive electroproduction of S-wave heavy quarkonia off a nucleon target. Such a study has been performed within the color dipole approach using, as an example and a reference point, two popular parametrizations of the dipole cross section and two potentials describing the interaction bet

In Search Of The Missing Place

My research thesis is a search for a place to be, a place that would make the city an easier place to live and experience, when we are either constantly surrounded by a tumultuous public or isolated at home. My search has led me to define a place that could provide simultaneously Space and Time to bridge what is missing in both the public and the private. What is there left, not linked to commerc

Overindebtedness among Young Adults in Sweden: A qualitative study on young adults’ perceptions on the desire to consume and consequences of overindebtedness

Debts among individuals and households in Sweden have increased over the years. Although statistics from the Swedish Enforcement Authority show that the total number of people registered with excessive debts has declined for the third year in a row, the total amount of debt of those individuals and households who are already overindebted on other hand continues to increase. Moreover, debtors regis

Conceptualizations and perceptions of value through in-store self-service technology usage

Self-service technology (SST) is implemented in-store as a way of facilitating and enhancing customer experience in which value is co-created. Previous research on SSTs has been mainly conducted in utilitarian settings where discussions were inclined towards attributes of value-in-use with an emphasis on efficiency. However, when implemented in a hedonic retail setting such as fast fashion, co-cre

Blund

This study implicates research on outdoor pedagogies and a solution to support and extend pre-schools visits in nature environments. Pedagogies where daily activities take place in nature environments is growing among Swedish schools and pre-schools. Research about child development shows that free play outside has a number of positive effects on children’s health and well-being. Nature has proven

The Contestants’ Willingness to Join Competitions in Contest-based Crowdsourcing

Contest-based crowdsourcing is a popular method for companies to gather ideas or information in a creative way, and the contestants’ motivations to participate in such competitions are not the same. Different factors influence the willingness of contestants to participate in contests. Yet these motives are not applicable to all types of crowdsourcing. This paper investigates the motivations and fi

Den officiella definitionen av välgörenhet enligt NationalencyRegardless of one’s own attitude towards charity it evokes emotions among most people. Drawing from my own experiences as a volunteer for different organizations and causes, I have noticed that many are happy to, very openly, share and talk about how they do charity or if they are skeptical towards charity, defend why they do not do charity. Doing charity is commonly defined as an unselfish act al

Konsten att sprida kultur - En studie av subventionssystemet för scenkonst i Skåne

This paper is about the subsidy system for performing arts and how this system is used as a tool for cultural policy. This seems to be an area in cultural policy that has been overlooked in earlier studies. The subsidy system for performing arts is a question about democracy, and therefore also a question about who has the rights to experiance performing arts. Looking closer at the system and the

"Utan dig är jag ingen" - En kvalitativ innehållsanalys om mäns våld mot kvinnor i nära relationer

The aim of this study is to get a deeper understanding of the emotional processes, women living with intimate partner violence experience, by analyzing six autobiographies in a qualitative thematic analysis. By having an inductive approach, we identified the following theories to be relevant and applicable to the women's descriptions of their relationships: the normalization process, stigma an
