The structure of Rhodothermus marinus Cel12A, a highly thermostable family 12 endoglucanase, at 1.8 Å resolution

Cellulose is one of the most abundant polysaccharides in nature and microorganisms have developed a comprehensive system for enzymatic breakdown of this ubiquitous carbon source, a subject of much interest in the biotechnology industry. Rhodothermus marinus produces a hyperthermostable cellulase, with a temperature optimum of more than 90 °C, the structure of which is presented here to 1.8 Å resol

Simulation of CO2 and Attribution Analysis at Six European Peatland Sites Using the ECOSSE Model

In this study, we simulated heterotrophic CO2 (Rh) fluxes at six European peatland sites using the ECOSSE model and compared them to estimates of Rh made from eddy covariance (EC) measurements. The sites are spread over four countries with different climates, vegetation and management. Annual Rh from the different sites ranged from 110 to 540 g C m(-2). The maximum annual Rh occurred when the wate

Relationship between moth (night active Lepidoptera) diversity and vegetation characteristics in southern Sweden

The diversity and community composition of moths (both macro- and micromoths) at 32 sites, representing a wide range of habitat types (forests, grasslands, wetlands, agricultural and urban areas) within a restricted region in central Scania,southern-most Sweden, was investigated by use of light moth traps and compared with vascular plant species richness and habitat characteristics. The results re

DynSus : Dynamic sustainability assessment in groundwater remediation practice

Decision-making processes for clean-up of contaminated sites are often highly complex and inherently uncertain. It depends not only on hydrological and biogeochemical site variability, but also on the associated health, environmental, economic, and social impacts of taking, or not taking, action. These variabilities suggest that a dynamic framework is required for promoting sustainable remediation

Factors governing the activity of lyophilised and immobilised lipase preparations in organic solvents

Active site titration and activity measurements were performed in hexane on lyophilised lipase preparations containing different amounts of phosphate buffer and lipase immobilised on porous polypropylene. Lyophilisation of Thermomyces lanuginosus lipase with large quantities of phosphate salts (200 mm) increased the specific activity fourfold, and the number of rapidly titratable active sites incr

MAGIC, SAFE and SMART model applications at integrated monitoring sites: Effects of emission reduction scenarios

Three well-known dynamic acidification models (MAGIC, SAFE, SMART) were applied to data sets from five Integrated Monitoring sites in Europe. The calibrated models were used in a policy-oriented framework to predict the long-term soil acidification of these background forest sites, given different scenarios of future deposition of S and N. Emphasis was put on deriving realistic site-specific scena

Kvarteret Flaggskepparen, Industriellt byggande för offentligt ägda bostäder -En fallstudie i samarbete med NCC Komponent och MKB

The primary focus of this Master thesis is to study how industrial house building can be implemented during production of rental flats under the terms of public procurement. In order to determine a suitable working process as well as presenting a possible architectonic result of the process, a case study is carried through. A housing projekt is designed on a site i Malmö, where the commisioner is

A novel in-situ method to determine the respiratory tract deposition of carbonaceous particles reveals dangers of public commuting in highly polluted megacity

Background: Exposure to air pollutants is one of the major environmental health risks faced by populations globally. Information about inhaled particle deposition dose is crucial in establishing the dose–response function for assessing health-related effects due to exposure to air pollution. Objective: This study aims to quantify the respiratory tract deposition (RTD) of equivalent black carbon (B

Machine-Learning Approach to Non-Destructive Biomass and Relative Growth Rate Estimation in Aeroponic Cultivation

We train and compare the performance of two machine learning methods, a multi-variate regression network and a ResNet-50-based neural network, to learn and forecast plant biomass as well as the relative growth rate from a short sequence of temporal images from plants in aeroponic cultivation. The training dataset consists of images of 57 plants taken from two different angles every hour during a 5

Google Analytics as a tool for usability evaluation of mobile applications

In recent years, the market for mobile applications has continuously grown in size, and appears to continue to grow. This means greater competition among app developing companies as the users expect applications with high usability and a great user experience. To assess these properties the companies can perform usability evaluations. However, practicing traditional usability evaluation methods ca

Stenens hus

Här höggs sten från Norra Högeberg och plaThis project examines the potential design of a visitor center named ”Stenens Hus” in Hunnebostrand, Sweden. The village was a prominent stone quarrying community in the 20th century, and the quarrying industry left its mark on the town even after it was shut down in the 1970s. One important place in Hunnebostrand during this era was Udden, where stone from Norra Högeberg was quarried. The site

Röekillorna Spring from a taphonomic perspective: Taphonomic analysis of animal bones from the wetland environment of Röekillorna Spring (Löderup parish, Scania)

Taphonomy is the study of how different processes have affected the osteological material, from the death of the animal and forward. The purpose of the analysis is to study how taphonomic processes and fluvial activity affect the preservation of osteological material in a wetland environment, by examining the zooarchaeological material from Röekillorna Spring (Löderup parish, Scania). A quantitati
