Structure and line strengths in extreme jK coupling: an experimental and theoretical study in Ni ii

The spectrum emitted from a nickel hollow cathode has been recorded with a Fourier transform spectrometer. Two dense groups of lines just above 18 000 Å have been identified as the transitions 3d8 (3F)5f-3d8 (3F)6g and 3d8 (3F)5g-3d8 (3F)6h in Ni II. The level structure of the configurations involved in these transitions has been studied by fitting the Slater parameters of the energy matrices to t

Hyperfine-structure study in the P sequence of 23 Na using quantum-beam spectroscopy

Describes use of the quantum-beat method to study hyperfine structure in the 5 2 P 3/2 and 6 2 P 3/2 states of 23 Na. A pulsed dye laser, frequency-doubled into the UV region, was used to excite sodium atoms abruptly in a beam. The fluorescent light was recorded with a fast transient digitiser, interfaced to a micro-computer. Theoretical calculations using many-body perturbation theory were perfor

Faster-than-Nyquist modulation based on short finite pulses

We investigate faster-than-Nyquist modulation based on short finite pulses over the AWGN channel. We consider several pulse shapes and compare their information rates for several system setups. We compare the effect of increasing the alphabet size versus of increasing the signaling rate. The outcome is that for these pulses the FTN symbol rate is of greater importance than the alphabet size. Final

Spray fire tests with hydraulic fluids

Two test series simulating the hazards associated with the accidental release of hydraulic fluid near a source of ignition have been carried out with six hydraulic fluids; mineral oil, organic ester, phosphate ester, water in oil emulsion and two polyglycols in water solution. The flame length, temperature and radiation and the auto-ignition temperature were measured. The correlation between the t

Phase noise analysis and design of a 3-GHz bipolar differential colpitts VCO

This paper presents a low-phase-noise differential bipolar Colpitts VCO, implemented in a 0.35/spl mu/m BiCMOS process. A time-variant phase noise analysis yields closed- form symbolic expressions for the dominant noise sources in the 1/f/sup 2/ phase-noise region. Measurements show a phase noise of -123 dBc/Hz at 1MHz offset from a 2.8-3.1 GHz carrier, for a figure-of-merit of 183 dBc/Hz. A very

Capacitive biosensors for ultra-sensitive assays

Capacitive binding assays have long been considered highly sensitive. The underlying method in such assays includes sending short potential pulses and then registering the current. However, with the introduction of current pulses and registration of potential responses, the stability improved significantly, leading to assays of extreme sensitivities. The new assaying technology has been applied in

On the Remarkable Performance of the Series-Resonance CMOS Oscillator

Common harmonic oscillator topologies, such as class-B and class-C, are typically unable to meet ultra stringent phase noise requirements, due to the exceedingly large capacitance (and, symmetrically, low inductance) that would be required in the parallel resonator. In this paper, we show that an oscillator making use of series resonators is ideally able to overcome this limitation, with the addit

Peptide folding and aggregation studied using a simplified atomic model

Using an atomic model with a simplified-sequence-based potential, the folding properties of several different peptides are studied. Both alpha-helical (Trp cage, F-s) and beta-sheet(GB1p, GB1m2, GB1m3, Betanova, LLM) peptides are considered. The model is able to fold these different peptides for one and the same choice of;parameters, and the melting behaviour of the peptides (folded population aga

An Industrial Application of a Self-Tuning Regulator

An implementation of a self-tuning regulator is described. The regulator algorithm consists of two steps. Firstly the parameters of a model of the process are estimated in real time using the method of least squares. Secondly a minimum variance regulator based on the estimated parameters is computed at each sampling interval. Implementation of the algorithm on a process computer is discussed. Ques

Multiple Plasmon Satellites in Na and Al Spectral Functions from Ab Initio Cumulant Expansion

he valence photoemission spectra of alkali metals exhibit multiple plasmon satellite structure. The calculated spectral functions within the GW approximation show only one plasmon satellite at too large binding energy. In this Letter we use the cumulant expansion approach to obtain the spectral functions of Na and Al from ab initio calculations including the effects of band structure. The GW spect
