Light Scattering By Multiple Red Blood Cells

The interaction of light with multiple red blood cells was systematically investigated by the finite-different time-domain method. The simulations show that the lateral multiple scattering between red blood cells is very weak. The polarization is shown to have an almost insignificant influence on the distribution of the scattered light. The numerical results were compared with three approximate metho

Geom09 course evaluation 2018

Confusion assessment method for the intensive care unit (CAM-ICU): translation, retranslation and validation into Swedish intensive care settings

Background: Becoming critical ill or severely injured leads to a process of worry, anxiety and pain. Patients in intensive care sometimes have strange and frightening experiences and may show symptoms of acute confusion or delirium. CAM-ICU, the confusion assessment method for the intensive care unit, was based on the DSM IV, the Diagnostic and Statistic Manual of Mental Disorders IV, and today, h

Raka balkar som belastas med punktlaster eller utbredda laster får ett tryck i balkens överkanGlulam arches with long span often have a very high and slender cross-section. This may cause lateral torsional buckling of the arch. A symmetrical loading doesn’t usually become a problem, but if the arch is loaded asymmetrical there will be large bending moments that increases the risk of instability significantly. Straight beams that are subjected to point loads or distributed loading will be s

Inner-shell ionization processes in low Z (Z ≤ 20) elements by proton bombardment

K-shell X-ray ionization cross section from thin targets of P, S, Cl, K and Ca by proton impact in the energy range of 1.0-5.0 MeV are reported using a Si(Li) detector. Our experimental results are compared with previous very scanty available data and with ECPSSR theory. Data for P are reported for the first time. Results for S, Cl and K in this wide energy range are also new data. Our results sho

100Sn Core Excitations in 102In

Nuclei in the vicinity of the doubly-magic Sn-100 nucleus have been studied, and an extended level scheme for In-102 has been established. The level structure comprises both the negative parity states involving the nuh(11/2) orbital, and levels due to the breakup of the doubly-magic Sn-100 core. Results of a large-scale shell model calculation, using realistic and empirical effective interactions

Natural radiative lifetimes in Ce II

New radiative lifetimes of 18 levels (energy range between 30 000 cm(-1)) and 39 000 cm(-1), in Ce II have been measured using the time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence method. A tunable frequency-doubled dye laser with I ns pulse duration was used to excite selectively singly ionized cerium in a laser-produced plasma The experimental results are compared with theoretical data and the agreement

Simulation of corrosion fatigue crack growth under mixed-mode loading

The kinking of a corrosion crack due to mixed-mode fatigue loading is studied using an adaptive finite element procedure. The rate of material dissolution is assumed to be proportional to the stretching of the corroding surface. The dissolution of material is governed by a corrosion law, where no criterion is needed for neither crack growth nor growth direction. The problem is treated as a general

Partitioned methods for time-dependent thermal fluid-structure interaction

The invention of computers revolutionized the way of doing science and in particular the field of mathematics. Computers were faster than any human mind in doing calculations and they did not make mistakes opening a wide range of possibilities that earlier where in practice uncomputable. Scientists observe the behavior of nature and find mathematical equations that model the different phenomena. IThe efficient simulation of thermal interaction between fluids and structures is crucial in the design of many industrial products, e.g. turbine blades or rocket nozzles. The main goal of this work is to present a high order time adaptive multirate parallel partitioned coupled method for the efficient numerical solution of two parabolic problems with strong jumps in the material coefficients that

High-spin terminating bands formed from successive particle-hole excitations across closed shells

Observed high spin states in 30Zn and 66Dy isotopes with two protons outside the closed shells at Z = 28 and Z = 64, respectively, are discussed and compared with cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations. Bands terminating at higher and higher spin values are formed from successive proton excitations across these shells. These bands show very different features depending on the number of excited pa

A new approach to detection of antigen-antibody complexes by microcalorimetric measurements of heat production in blood cells

Using batch microcalorimeters of the thermopile conduction type, heat production was measured in human blood in the presence of defined antigens and their specific antibodies. A large increase in heat production, reflecting increased metabolic activity in the blood cells, was found when antigens and specific antisera at certain antigen-antibody proportions were mixed with the blood. The reproducib

RCS reduction of integrated antenna arrays with resistive sheets

Edge diffraction call be a major source of high radar visibility for integrated array antennas. In this paper, it is shown that tapered resistive sheets at the edges of the array can be used to transform the scattering properties of the antenna to that of a metallic plate and hence reduce the radar cross section. Numerical examples of kill array of self-complementary patches and a, bandpass freque

Anharmonic resonances in the C-H stretch region of ethoxy adsorbed on W(110): vibrational spectroscopy and calculations

We show that it is possible to understand and interpret the complex and rich C-H stretch region in the vibrational spectrum of ethoxy adsorbed on W(110) in terms of fundamental C-H stretch modes in Fermi resonance with C-H deformation overtones and combinations. The mode assignment is based on calculated C-13 isotopic shifts for an ethoxy-Cu-5 cluster. The coupling constants have been derived from
