Platelet count kinetics following Interruption of antiretroviral treatment: Results from the SMART study.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the mechanisms of platelet kinetics in the SMART study that demonstrated excess mortality with CD4 guided episodic antiretroviral therapy (ART) (drug conservation [DC]) compared to continuous treatment (viral suppression [VS]). Follow up analyses of stored plasma samples demonstrated increased activation of both inflammatory and coagulation pathways after stopping ART.

Aerobic and anaerobic nitrogen transformation processes in N-2-fixing cyanobacterial aggregates

Colonies of N-2-fixing cyanobacteria are key players in supplying new nitrogen to the ocean, but the biological fate of this fixed nitrogen remains poorly constrained. Here, we report on aerobic and anaerobic microbial nitrogen transformation processes that co-occur within millimetre-sized cyanobacterial aggregates (Nodularia spumigena) collected in aerated surface waters in the Baltic Sea. Microe

Predictive role of plasma vascular endothelial growth factor for the effect of celecoxib in advanced non-small cell lung cancer treated with chemotherapy

Aim of the study: The primary purpose of this study is to investigate if pretreatment plasma levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) are predictive of the effect of celecoxib on survival in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with palliative chemotherapy. A secondary objective is to describe the course of plasma VEGF levels during and after treatment with cytotoxic chem

Post-Relapse Survival in Patients With Ewing Sarcoma

BackgroundPost-relapse survival (PRS) was evaluated in patients with Ewing sarcoma (EWS) enrolled in chemotherapy protocols based on the use of high-dose chemotherapy with busulfan and melfalan (HDT) as a first-line consolidation treatment in high-risk patients. ProcedureEWS patients enrolled in ISG/SSG III and IV trials who relapsed after complete remission were included in the analysis. At recur

Loop migration in adult marsh harriers Circus aeruginosus, as revealed by satellite telemetry

Loop migration among birds is characterized by the spring route lying consistently west or east of the autumn route. The existence of loops has been explained by general wind conditions or seasonal differences in habitat distribution. Loop migration has predominantly been studied at the population level, for example by analysing ring recoveries. Here we study loop migration of individual marsh har

Nuclear magnetic relaxation by the dipolar EMOR mechanism: General theory with applications to two-spin systems.

In aqueous systems with immobilized macromolecules, including biological tissue, the longitudinal spin relaxation of water protons is primarily induced by exchange-mediated orientational randomization (EMOR) of intra- and intermolecular magnetic dipole-dipole couplings. We have embarked on a systematic program to develop, from the stochastic Liouville equation, a general and rigorous theory that c

HIF-mediated metabolic switching in bladder outlet obstruction mitigates the relaxing effect of mitochondrial inhibition.

Prior work demonstrated increased levels of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) in the bladder following outlet obstruction, associated with bladder growth and fibrosis. Here we hypothesized that HIF induction in outlet obstruction also switches energetic support of contraction from mitochondrial respiration to glycolysis. To address this hypothesis, we created infravesical outlet obstruction in

Mammalian evolution may not be strictly bifurcating.

The massive amount of genomic sequence data that is now available for analyzing evolutionary relationships among 31 placental mammals reduces the stochastic error in phylogenetic analyses to virtually zero. One would expect that this would make it possible to finally resolve controversial branches in the placental mammalian tree. We analyzed a 2,863,797 nucleotide-long alignment (3,364 genes) from

Variability of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide apparent quantum yield spectra in three coastal estuaries of the South Atlantic Bight

The photochemical oxidation of oceanic dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2) has been estimated to be a significant process with global photoproduction transforming petagrams of DOC to inorganic carbon annually. To further quantify the importance of these two photoproducts in coastal DOC cycling, 38 paired apparent quantum yield (AQY) spectra for CO and CO

Assessment of genetic and pheromonal diversity of the Cydia strobilella species complex (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae)

Combining pheromone trapping and genetic analyses can be useful whentrying to resolve complexes of closely related insect taxa that are difficult to distinguishbased on morphological characters. Nearctic and Palearctic populations of the spruceseed moth, Cydia strobilella L., have been considered taxonomically synonymoussince 1983, but more recent work revealing distinct sex pheromones for Canadia

Does pollinator composition and behaviour affect the reproductive success of a rare plant species (Arnica montana)?

Through the tight link between plants and their pollinators, plant species often decline when their pollinators decline and vice versa. These nominal declines are well studied for many plant-pollinator networks. Less well known is the effect that the decline of a plant species has on the behaviour of its pollinators, and how potential changes in pollinator behaviour affect the reproductive success

“We all live with many selves at once – that’s the true nature of life.” - Exploring Tibetan Identities through Audience Study on Native Tibetan Film Balloon (2019)

This thesis explores the construction and negotiation of Tibetan identities through the lens of native Tibetan cinema, with a focus on Pema Tseden’s Balloon (2019). Drawing on theories of identity as construction, cultural hybridity, and minor cinema, the study examines how cinematic narratives and audience interpretations intersect to produce a nuanced understanding of Tibetan identities in conte

Voicing the Everyday: Humor as Affirmation and Resistance in Chinese Women’s Stand-Up The case of Chinese online stand-up comedy shows

This thesis investigates how Chinese female stand-up comedians construct gendered narratives through humor and how female audiences interpret and respond to these performances. Focusing on two popular online shows—Stand-up Comedy and Its Friends and Comedy King (Stand-up Season)—the study examines how humor becomes a space for negotiating feminist expression under ideological, cultural, and commer

Its aim is to map existing and emerging remediation methods, identify technical, legal and economic obstacles, and quantify potential climate and cost benefits, giving industry stakeholders a sound basis for increasing local treatment and reuse of soil

CROSS-ECOSYSTEM EFFECT of ALIEN FISH on INSECTIVORES living around HIGH MOUNTAIN LAKES

Growing research on ecosystem subsidies has emphasized the connection between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, with changes in one triggering responses in the other. In high mountain lakes, emerging aquatic insects are considered key aquatic subsidies and serve as an important nutrient resource for surrounding terrestrial ecosystem. The introduction of alien fish into these lakes, known to caus

A single residue affects the dynamics and shape of a tetrameric GH43 β-1,4-d-xylosidase from Levilactobacillus brevis DSM1269

Lignocellulosic materials (e.g., straw and bran) are gaining interest as feedstocks for the manufacture of higher value products, recognizing xylooligosaccharides (XOS) as interesting prebiotic compounds, and putting enzymes converting xylooligosaccharides into focus. In this work, we are investigating a XOS converting enzyme from the probiotic bacterium Levilactobacillus brevis (formerly Lactobac

Non-prescribed use of methadone and buprenorphine prior to opioid substitution treatment : lifetime prevalence, motives, and drug sources among people with opioid dependence in five Swedish cities

Background: Opioid substitution treatment (OST) with methadone or buprenorphine is the most effective means of treating opioid dependence. If these substances are used by people who are not undergoing OST, they can however carry serious risks. This article examines the lifetime prevalence, motives, and drug sources for such use, as well as geographical differences in these variables. Methods: Stru
