Background: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common skin cancer form, and one first-line treatment is surgical excision. Complete excision is vital to minimize risk of recurrence. Studies on occurrence of incomplete excisions have given diverse results and seldom include large populations from a dermatological setting. Objectives: The rate of positive surgical margins in primary surgery of B

The functional trait framework provides a powerful corpus of integrated concepts and theories to assess how environmental factors influence ecosystem functioning through community assembly. While common in plant ecology, this approach is under-used in microbial ecology. After an introduction of this framework in the context of microbial ecology and enzymology, we propose an approach 1) to elucidat

A native passive film on 25Cr-7Ni super duplex stainless steel was analyzed using synchrotron hard X-ray photoemission electron microscopy, focusing on variations between individual grains of ferrite and austenite phases. The film consists of an oxide inner layer and an oxyhydroxide outer layer, in total 2.3 nm thick. The Cr content is higher in the outer than the inner layer, ca. 80 % on average.

Background: Employment is good for physical and mental health, however people with severe mental illness (SMI) are often excluded from employment. Standard Individual Placement and Support (IPS) is effective in supporting around 55% of people with SMI into employment or education. Current research considers enhancements to IPS to improve outcomes for those requiring more complex interventions. Cli

Climate change is not only about changes in means of climatic variables such as temperature, precipitation and wind, but also their extreme values which are of critical importance to human society and ecosystems. To inspire the Swedish climate research community and to promote assessments of international research on past and future changes in extreme weather events against the global climate chan

There is a growing body of literature concerning the social construction of crisis. This study aimed to clarify inconsistencies regarding the social constructionist perspective by examining how the key terms of social constructionism are applied in crisis communication and crisis management studies. Through an analysis of 65 scholarly works in both communication and business journals, this study p

The central problem of this thesis is estimating receiver-sender node positions from measured receiver-sender distances or equivalent measurements. This problem arises in many applications such as microphone array calibration, radio antenna array calibration, mapping and positioning using ultra-wideband and mapping and positioning using round-trip-time measurements between mobile phones and Wi-Fi-

The association in aqueous mixtures of a thermoresponsive cationic diblock copolymer composed of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and poly(3-acrylamidopropyl)-trimethylammonium-chloride (PAMPTMA(+)) and the oppositely charged bile salt sodium deoxycholate (NaDC) is investigated at different compositions by light and X-ray scattering, calorimetry, and electrophoretic mobility measurements. Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus is an obligate predatory bacterium that invades and kills a broad range of Gram-negative prey cells, including human pathogens. Its potential therapeutic application has been the subject of increased research interest in recent years. However, an improved understanding of the fundamental molecular aspects of the predatory life cycle is crucial for developing this bacteri

The nonlinear material properties of thermoplastics like polyoxymethylene (POM) can influence the thermo-mechanical response of polymer gears to applied running loads. In the presented study, the non-elastic strain rate- and temperature-dependent mechanical characteristics of POM are examined, along with their influence on the mechanical response of the polymer gear at the tooth root and contact i

The foraging activity of diurnal bees often relies on flower availability, light intensity and temperature. We do not know how nocturnal bees, which fly at night and twilight, cope with these factors, especially as light levels vary considerably from night to day and from night to night due to moon phase and cloud cover. Given that bee apposition compound eyes function at their limits in dim light

Background: Musculoskeletal pain is common in the general population and constitutes a major public health problem. A large proportion of these conditions may be work related. The aim of this study was to explore the relative importance of physical, psychosocial and personal factors, in number of pain sites and in five specific pain sites, among women in common professions with a broad variety of

OBJECTIVE: Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is commonly used in the continuous mode. Intermittent pressure therapy (IPT) results in faster wound healing, but it often causes pain. Variable pressure therapy (VPT) has therefore been introduced to provide a smooth transition between 2 different pressure environments, thereby maintaining the negative pressure environment throughout the therapy.

Understanding 3d human interactions is fundamental for fine grained scene analysis and behavioural modeling. However, most of the existing models focus on analyzing a single person in isolation, and those who process several people focus largely on resolving multi-person data association, rather than inferring interactions. This may lead to incorrect, lifeless 3d estimates, that miss the subtle hu

Background: Social Networking Sites (SNS) are commonly used, especially by young adults. Their impact on mental health is unclear. Moreover, little is known about how social factors, e.g. Perceived Emotional Support (PES), may affect this association. Mental health issues are increasingly burdening the young generation and society as a whole. This study aims to investigate the association between

This master thesis project has been conducted in cooperation with Lantmännen AB who are producers of PromOat® - an oat β-glucan powder concentrate. The main objective of this thesis was to investigate the properties of emulsions containing PromOat® oat β-glucan, focusing on the viscosity, stability, and molecular weight before and after high pressure homogenization (HPH) at pressures of 100, 150 a

The field of entrepreneurship is widely regarded as a primary catalyst for addressing fundamental environmental and social issues. This study investigates the internal motivations of entrepreneurs leading to sustainable venture creation and highlights the external influences on the business model and its innovation. Based on in-depth interviews with founders of sustainable ventures, the research s
