Barn och unga placeras i sista hand eller akut på Statens institutionsstyrelses ungdomshem (SiS-hem). De flesta av barnen blir tvångsplacerade där med stöd av lag (1990:52) med vissa bestämmelser om vård av unga (LVU), orsak till placering kan vara droger, otrygg hemmiljö och kriminalitet.
