The interrogative model of inquiry and inquiry learning

Hakkarainen and Sintonen (2002) praise the descriptive adequacy of Hintikka's Interrogative Model of Inquiry (imi) to describe children's practices in an inquiry-based learning context. They further propose to use the imi as a starting point for developing new pedagogical methods and designing new didactic tools. We assess this proposal in the light of the formal results that in the imi characteri

Evaluation of SIMD architecture enhancement in embedded processors for MPEG-4

This paper presents our studies on the effects of using SIMD processor extension developed to enhance the processor performance for streaming applications. Our approach was evaluated using MPEG-4 encoding application as benchmark. Although MPEG-4 consists of many different operations, we concentrated on the sum of absolute differences (SAD), a major part of the motion estimation. The SAD was chose

OSL in Household Salt (NaCl) for Environmental, Occupational and Medical Dosimetry

The recent progress in our work to implement salt (NaCl) as a dosemeter is presented. Laboratory investigations have indicated a linear dose response from 1 mGy to about 100 mGy and detection limits down to 0.1 mGy. Investigations in the clinic comparing TL-dosimetry in LiF and OSL in NaCl have indicated a similar dose response for the two dosemeters at different photon energies. Field studies wit

Towards Linking Disruptive Innovations and BOP Markets

The base of the world economic pyramid consists of 4 billion people typically earning less than 4 USD per day. This population is generally called the base of the pyramid (BoP). Much research on BoP markets focuses on motivating companies to enter these markets to create a win-win situation such that companies can gain benefits and BoP customers can satisfy their unmet or under-served needs. The r

Hand Veins Feature Extraction using DT-CNNs

As the identification process is based on the unique patterns of the users, biometrics technologies are expected to provide highly secure authentication systems. The existing systems using fingerprints or retina patterns are, however, very vulnerable. One’s fingerprints are accessible as soon as the person touches a surface, while a high resolution camera easily captures the retina pattern. Thus,

Off-task Engagement in a Teachable Agent based Math Game

A previous study compared two student groups that played a mathematics game based on a teachable agent. One group played with, and the other without, the inclusion of a social conversation module: a chat between the student and the teachable agent. Results were that students who used the game with the chat included had a more positive experience of the game and learned more in the sense of teachin

Total Quality Indicators for the Food Production Chain: is there a need for more labelling?

The state of the farming industry in Europe has been put under the spotlight in recent years due to a number of different food scares and disease outbreaks. Many new quality assurance schemes have been formed to accompany the existing environmental monitoring schemes, to give concerned consumers some guarantee when buying food that it is of a good quality and the environmental load of production h

Sparse bayesian classification of predicate arguments

We present an application of Sparse Bayesian Learning to the task of semantic role labeling, and we demonstrate that this method produces smaller classifiers than the popular Support Vector approach. We describe the classification strategy and the features used by the classifier. In particular, the contribution of six parse tree path features is investigated.

A model library for dynamic simulation of liquid food process lines

Ongoing work in developing a general structure and a comprehensive components library aiming at modelling liquid-food process lines is presented. The dynamic component models were developed in an object-oriented library structure based on the dynamic modelling language Modelica using the object-oriented graphical tool Dymola. The models were based on fundamental conservation laws and can simulate

Different Conceptions in Software Project Risk Assessment

During software project risk management, a number of decisions are taken based on discussions and subjective opinions about the importance of identified risks. In this paper, different people's opinions about the importance of identified risks are investigated in a controlled experiment through the use of utility functions. Engineering students participated as subjects in the experiment. Differenc
