S.T.A.R. Design - Design of human habitats for space, and terrestrial implications

The S.T.A.R. Design Studio (Space and Terrestrial Architectural Research) studies pre-industrial habitats in i.a. Tanzania, and develops design concepts for future habitats in space in cooperation with Johnson Space Centre, Houston, Texas. In both cases our studies focus on "extreme" circumstances. Perhaps studying the conditions of a crew sealed in a capsule can better prepare us for the problems

Lighting Recommendations in Operating Theatres

“The eyes lead the body.” A good visual environment is important for performance and wellbeing. Unsatisfactory visual conditions often induce a strained posture, more or less unconsciously, in an effort to improve vision. The requirements for the visual environment in an operating theatre are high. Surgeons or assistants who are having visual problems can induce treatment hazards. The purpose of t

What characterize an Enterprise Systems Implementation Methodology

Enterprise Systems Implementation Methodology (ESIM) is considered to be a critical factor for successful Enterprise Systems (ES) implementations. In spite of ESIM’s potential and significance for practice, little attention has been paid to this object of study in ES literature. Current studies reveal contradictory findings regarding its potential value and provide a fragmented understanding of it

Meta Isæus-Berlin: De animerade installationerna /The Animated Installations

Meta Isæus-Berlin: The Animated Installations Torsten Weimarck At about the same time that I saw Meta Isæus-Berlin’s remarkable installation Ett vattenhem (A Water Home) at the Bo01 Housing Fair in Malmö I also happened to see Johannes Stjärne Nilsson and Ola Simonsson’s film Music for one appartment and six drummers which was shown as a supporting film in the cinema. It struck me that these wo

Towards Active Learning Spaces and the Flipped Classroom Model

It has been acknowledged that the traditional didactic lecture does not always provide the ideal learning and teaching experience (Bligh, 1998). Over the last ten years, individuals and institutions have been exploring the pedagogical possibilities of providing more active and engaging alternatives. One model in particular has been influential in sparking change. The use of Active Learning Spaces

Interaction sign patterns in biological networks: from qualitative to quantitative criteria

In stable biological and ecological networks, the steady-state influence matrix gathers the signs of steady-state responses to step-like perturbations affecting the variables. Such signs are difficult to predict a priori, because they result from a combination of direct effects (deducible from the Jacobian of the network dynamics) and indirect effects. For stable monotone or cooperative networks,

Feasibility of energy justice: Exploring national and local efforts for energy development in Nepal

The energy justice framework serves as an important decision-making tool in order to understand how different principles of justice can inform energy systems and policies. The realization of the urgency of providing modern energy technology and services particularly to rural areas has prompted both the Nepalese government and development institutions to focus on community-run renewable energy faci

The one triangle three parallelograms sampling strategy and its application in shape regression

The purpose of this paper is threefold. Firstly, the paper introduces the One Triangle Three Parallelograms (OTTP) sampling strategy, which can be viewed as a way to index pixels from a given shape and image. Secondly, a framework for cascaded shape regression, including the OTTP sampling, is presented. In short, this framework involves binary pixel tests for appearance features combined with shap

Robust microphone array using subband adaptive beamformer and spectral subtraction

This paper presents a new robust microphone array to enhance speech signal under the influence of noise and jammer(s). The proposed structure comprises of a soft constrained subband beamformer, a blocking system and a non-coherent processing technique. The soft constrained beamformer enhances the desired speech signal in a specified region by suppressing all side-lobes. This enhanced signal is the
