Water quality in the Apac, Mbale & Lira districts, Uganda : a field study evaluating problems and suitable solutions

Safe water is a widespread problem in developing countries. In 2004 The United Nations formed the Lake Victoria Region Water and Sanitation Initiative, which focuses on increasing the water quality and basic sanitation in both rural- and urban areas. The government of Uganda is a part of the initiative, since the quality of the drinking water in the country persists to be a widespread problem. In

Interlaboratory tests on thermal foot models

In order to compare measurements in different laboratories and with different models and measuring principles a small Round Robin test was suggested. 8 test institutions were able to join the study (with foot model sizes from 254 mm to 275 mm and test boot sizes from 41 to 44). We got also a declaration of interest from several other institutes that were not able to carry out the tests. A database

Application of Software Design Patterns to DSP Library Design

The design of a hardware data path library is one of the harder problems in design for reuse. Due to the appearance of hardware modeling libraries based on C++, it is possible to apply advanced software techniques to design such a library. This paper shows how software design patterns can be applied to hardware design. Design patterns yield a twofold advantage: a faster design process, and a libra

Exponential and practical exponential stability of second-order formation control systems

We study the problem of distance-based formation shape control for autonomous agents with double-integrator dynamics. Our considerations are focused on exponential stability properties. For second-order formation systems under the standard gradient-based control law, we prove local exponential stability with respect to the total energy by applying Chetaev's trick to the Lyapunov candidate function

iPACKMAN: High-Quality, Low-Complexity Texture Compression for Mobile Phones

We present a novel texture compression scheme, called iPACKMAN, targeted for hardware implementation. Interms of image quality, it outperforms the previous de facto standard texture compression algorithms in the majority of all cases that we have tested. Our new algorithm is an extension of the PACKMAN texture compressionsystem, and while it is a bit more complex than PACKMAN, it is still very low

Ecology of pollinators, pests and natural enemies in agricultural landscapes : ensuring a sustainable supply of clover seeds

The human population and its food consumption continues to grow and the environmental impact of meeting future food demands depends on how we expand the food supply. Already, agricultural intensification has led to biodiversity declines, which in turn can have direct and indirect effects on agricultural production. For future sustainable production there is a need to support ecosystems and their a

Deuteration of human carbonic anhydrase for neutron crystallography : Cell culture media, protein thermostability, and crystallization behavior

Deuterated proteins and other bio-derived molecules are important for NMR spectroscopy, neutron reflectometry, small angle neutron scattering, and neutron protein crystallography. In the current study we optimized expression media and cell culture conditions to produce high levels of 3 different deuterated human carbonic anhydrases (hCAs). The labeled hCAs were then characterized and tested for de

A model on the evolution of cryptobiosis

Cryptobiosis is an ametabolic state of life entered by some lower organisms (among metazoans mainly rotifers, tardigrades and nematodes) in response to adverse environmental conditions. Despite a long recognition of cryptobiotic organisms, the evolutionary origin and life history consequences of this biological phenomenon have remained unexplored. We present one of the first theoretical models on

RTK GNSS

RTK GNSS is a way of deciding the position of a GNSS receiver with high precision. It should theoretically be possible to determine the position with the precision of a couple of centimeters. Traditionally the RTK GNSS system consists of a base station and a rover. The base station knows its position and compares that to the information it gets from the satellites in order to calculate the error.
