Traditionally, our economy has been thought of as "linear"; raw materials are manufactured into products, used by consumers, and then thrown away once they are no longer useful. By reusing and recycling, however, we not only reduce our usage of raw materials, but also recoup much of their financial value in the long term. A circular economy aims to close the loop by recycling all products and mini

Explaining the difference in income-related health inequalities among the elderly in European countries using SHARE-data – A cross-country comparison

This study provide insights into the sources of differences in the degree of income-related inequalities in self-assessed health in 10 European countries using data on an older population (aged 50 and above) from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE, 2004). The aim of this study is to compare the inequalities of this older population with a younger population used in van Do

Comorbidities and sex differences in causes of death among mantle cell lymphoma patients – A nationwide population-based cohort study

The prognosis for mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) remains poor. Our aim was to assess the impact of comorbidities on survival and causes of death. For 1,385 MCL patients (1,009 males, 376 females) diagnosed in 2000–2014 (median age 71 years, range 22–96) comorbidities ≤ 10 years of diagnosis were classified according to the Charlson comorbidity index (CCI; 0, 1, 2+). Hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confid

Exhaled respiratory particles during singing and talking

Choir singing has been suspended in many countries during the Covid-19 pandemic due to incidental reports of disease transmission (Hamner et al. Citation2020). The mode of transmission has been attributed to exhaled droplets, but with the exception of a study on tuberculosis from 1968, there is presently almost no scientific evidence of increased particle emissions from singing (Loudon and RobertsChoir singing has been suspended in many countriesduring the Covid-19 pandemic due to incidental reportsof disease transmission. Adult rabbit retinal transplants

PURPOSE: To study the survival of adult retinal grafts prepared in a physiologically optimized way.METHODS: Twenty-three rabbits received an adult full-thickness rabbit retinal transplant positioned under the host retina, using a vitrectomy technique. The transplants were prepared using a procedure based on a previously described in vitro model used for physiological experiments on the adult retin

Association of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D and parathyroid hormone with mortality among middle-aged and older European men

Setting: prospective cohort analysis within the European Male Ageing Study. Participants: 2,816 community-dwelling men aged 40-79 years at baseline. Methods: Cox regression was used to examine the association of all-cause mortality with 25(OH)D, 1,25(OH)(2)D and PTH; cardiovascular and cancer mortality were modelled using competing-risks regression. Results were expressed as hazard ratios (HR) and

Prevalence and risk of pulmonary embolism in patients with intracardiac thrombosis: a population-based study of 23,796 consecutive autopsies

Aims White right intracardiac thrombosis (IT) is a potential cause of pulmonary embolism (PE) similar to that of stroke in left-sided IT, its prevalence and prognostic significance has not been studied in the general population. The aim of this study was to assess the age- and gender-specific prevalence of IT and its relation to PE in a population-based autopsy cohort. Methods and Results Between

Minor amputation in patients with diabetes mellitus and severe foot ulcers achieves good outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the outcome of minor amputations (through, or distal to, the ankle joint) in patients with diabetes. METHOD: All diabetic patients in a defined population undergoing one or more minor amputation between 1982 and 2006 were investigated according to a standardised protocol and were followed until final outcome (healing or death). A total of 410 consecutive amputations in 309 p

Comorbid conditions as predictors of mortality in severe COPD–an eight-year follow-up cohort study

Purpose: Co-morbidities are common in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. The aim of the present study was to explore the prevalence of several comorbid conditions in severe COPD, and to investigate and compare their associations with long-term mortality. Methods: In May 2011 to March 2012, 241 patients with COPD stage 3 or 4 were
