Problems studying and procrastination

The way in which academic studies are conducted may vary considerably from one country to another. At times it may be difficult to understand what is expected of you when you start studying in Sweden with only a few lectures, a great deal of individual responsibility and plenty of group work. Perhaps you are not used to this and it may take time to adapt to everything new. Shortcuts to page conten

Our brains are more flexible than previously believed

Our memory records details and detects patterns in everyday life - often without us even realising it. Researchers at Lund University have for the first time succeeded in showing that the brain does both these things simultaneously in real time. To investigate this, everyday situations from the computer game The Sims were used to understand how we process information in real life. We rely on our m

Cocktail of modified antibodies provides strong effect against SARS-CoV-2

Is it possible to improve the antibodies that the body produces to fight SARS-CoV2? In a study led by researchers from Lund University in Sweden, this was investigated by redesigning antibodies and combining them against the virus. The modified antibodies have been tested in human cells and with mice. Many antibodies used to treat covid infection during the pandemic have been so-called neutralizin

Fast fashion has a huge impact on the environment

On-trend clothes that you only wear a few times – in the beginning of the 2000s the fashion industry started speeding up production. Today, it accounts for around 10 per cent of global carbon dioxide emissions and criticism is being directed at the industry for not taking responsibility for its social and environmental impact. The big question is; can fashion become sustainable? Technological deve

Alarmingly low financial awareness among today's youth

The strong connection between financial problems and mental health issues is well known. A new study from Lund University in Sweden shows that only one in five young adults could correctly answer three basic questions about inflation, interest rates and risk diversification. At the same time, they are getting more into debt. This, the researchers argue, is a worrying development. We now know that

Master’s in International Strategic Management ranked among the world’s best

Lund University has secured a spot on the Financial Times Master’s in Management 2020 ranking, with the fairly new Master’s in International Strategic Management programme placing 73rd. The Master’s in International Strategic Management was launched in 2016, and is based on a long tradition of education and research in strategic management. This is Lund University's second programme ranked by Fina

Why repetitive DNA matters for human brain evolution and disease

For decades, large stretches of human DNA were dismissed as ‘junk’ and considered to serve no real purpose. In a new study in Cell Genomics, researchers at Lund University in Sweden show that the repetitive part of the human genome plays an active role during early brain development and may also be relevant for understanding brain diseases. DNA carries the complete set of instructions an organism

WATCH: Students invent alarm that protects your unattended bag

This article is over 5 years old, and the information may therefore be outdated. Leave your bag unsupervised without running the risk of thieves stealing it? That could be the case as a unique idea of a small, high-tech alarm from Master's students at Lund University is now coming to life. “I was by myself on a beach in Mexico and had to leave my bag unattended to take a swim. But while in the wat

Those who help each other can invade harsher environments

This article is over 5 years old, and the information may therefore be outdated. Through cooperation, animals are able to colonise harsher living environments that would otherwise be inaccessible, according to a new study from Lund University in Sweden, together with researchers in England and USA. The research community has long believed this was the other way around - that species in tough envir

Obesity reprogrammes muscle stem cells

Obesity is associated with reduced muscle mass and impaired metabolism. Epigenetic changes that affect the formation of new muscle cells may be a contributing factor, according to new research from Lund University, Sweden. In a new study, doctoral student Cajsa Davegårdh has studied so-called DNA methylation in muscle stem cells in both obese and non-obese individuals. DNA methylation is an epigen

Abortive translation caused by peptidyl-tRNA drop-off at NGG codons in the early coding region of mRNA

In Escherichia coli the codons CGG, AGG, UGG or GGG (NGG codons) but not GGN or GNG (where N is non-G) are associated with low expression of a reporter gene, if located at positions +2 to +5. Induction of a lacZ reporter gene with any one of the NGG codons at position +2 to +5 does not influence growth of a normal strain, but growth of a strain with a defective peptidyl-tRNA hydrolase (Pth) enzyme

Spatially coupled turbo-like codes : A new trade-off between waterfall and error floor

Spatially coupled turbo-like codes (SC-TCs) have been shown to have excellent decoding thresholds due to the threshold saturation effect. Furthermore, even for moderate block lengths, the simulation results demonstrate a very good bit error rate performance in the waterfall region. In this paper, we discuss the effect of spatial coupling on the performance of TCs in the finite block-length regime.

A novel approach to image coding using off-line foveation controlled by multiple eye-tracking measurement

In this paper we investigate the feasibility of using a wavelet transform to compress individual frames in a video sequence controlled by points of gaze coordinates collected from different viewers by an eye-tracker. Unlike most eye-tracking controlled compression approaches, we make the compression "off-line" and not in real time. Our results indicate that the distribution of gaze-points is "comp
