Disaster risk management and climate change adaptation in urban contexts: Integration and challenges

An increasing number of disasters continue to affect urban populations and housing infrastructure. The overwhelming majority of them have been caused by climate-related events. This situation has made the creation of synergies between climate change adaptation (CCA) and disaster risk management (DRM) urgent. Despite the recognised need to unite CCA and DRM efforts, the fields remain separate. Furt

Imagining the Land of Compassion

Western society has increasingly turned to different kinds of spirituality in dealing with an accelerated tempo and demands in everyday post-modern life. Yoga, meditation, mindfulness and other forms of modalities, often connected to ancient eastern thinking, are taught and implemented in management and leadership practises (Cederström & Spicer, 2015). Although organizational theorizing has pr

Conceptions in the Code : How Metaphors Explain Legal Challenges in Digital Times

Stefan Larsson's Conceptions in the Code contributes invaluably to socio-legal analysis and conceptual metaphor theory. By examining cases of digital copyright, Larsson elucidates the role that metaphor plays when law is accommodating technological change, displaying both conceptual path-dependence as well as non-legislative developments in law. Analyses draw from conceptual studies of property sp

Testing the heat dissipation limit theory in a breeding passerine

The maximum work rate of animals has recently been suggested to be determined by the rate at which excess metabolic heat generated during work can be dissipated (heat dissipation limitation (HDL) theory). As a first step towards testing this theory in wild animals, we experimentally manipulated brood size in breeding marsh tits (Poecile palustris) to change their work rate. Parents feeding nestlin

Perdeuteration of Biological Macromolecules: A Case Study of Human Carbonic Anhydrases

Deuterated biomolecules - where hydrogen atoms (H) are exchanged to its isotope deuterium (D) - are essential for biological experiments in neutron scattering, but they are not readily available. In neutron scattering, D has a strong positive coherent scattering length (6.67 fm) in comparison with the negative scattering length of H (-3.74 fm). These different characteristics of neutrons to D and

Studies towards late blight control in potato

Abstract The oomycete Phytophthora infestans, which causes the devastating late blight disease of potato, is notorious for developing resistance to conventional control strategies (fungicide application and resistance breeding by introgression of R gene). To increase our tool box of disease management strategies available to combat P. infestans, there is a need to explore several new approaches th

Building What? The Challenge of Introducing Alternative Building Practices into the Aqaba Built Environment

For cities growing in conditions of extreme heat and aridity, adapting their building stock to reflect these environmental challenges demands a social as well as technical shift. Aqaba in southern Jordan is embarking on this process. Extremely poor building thermal performance coupled with a lack of public understanding of basic energy principles is contributing to social and economic stress in Aq

Feminist perspectives on extractivism: South-South dialogue

6 november 2025 09:30 till 12:30 | Seminarium Scientific evidence shows that extractivism, as a development model reliant on the extraction of natural resources, has significant impacts on communities and ecosystems in the Global South, but also in the Global North. The concept of extractivism is born out of a politically engaged critique of a form of development that re-creates colonial inequalit

This article deals with a comparison between Matilde Serao’s short story “Checchina’s Virtue” ( 1884 ) and the homonymous unpublished theatrical script written by Massimo Franciosa ( 1995 ), of which a summary is provided. The comparison between the source text and the adaptation draws on the debate about the narrativity of drama in which many scholars have engaged in the last decades: Richardson
