Levels of 1-hydroxypyrene, symptoms and immunologic markers in vulcanization workers in the southern Sweden rubber industries.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine urinary 1-hydroxypyrene (1-HP) levels in contemporary Swedish vulcanization workers and in controls. These levels were used as an index substance for vulcanization fumes, as well as a biomarker for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The risk of symptoms and changed levels of immunologic markers were investigated in relation to the 1-HP level

Menstrual cycle characteristics and risk of coronary heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

In a prospective cohort study, we observed that women with a history of irregular cycles have a 28% increased coronary heart disease risk and tended to have a higher type 2 diabetes risk as compared with women who had a regular cycle length of 27 to 29 days. This association could not be explained by metabolic risk factors or altered hormone levels.

Non Franck-Condon effects in photoionization of molecular oxygen

We present a theoretical and experimental analysis of non Franck-Condon effects in photoionization to the b 4Σg- state of O2+. Experimentally, by dispersing the synchrotron radiation induced O2+ b 4Σg- - a 4Πu fluorescence we derive the b 4Σg- state vibrational branching ratios in the excitation energy range 21–34 eV. The vibrational branching ratios reveal features in the region 21–28 eV, indicat

Increased levels of cocaine and amphetamine regulated transcript in two animal models of depression and anxiety.

The neurobiological bases of mood disorders remain elusive but both monoamines and neuropeptides may play important roles. The neuropeptide cocaine and amphetamine regulated transcript (CART) was shown to induce anxiety-like behavior in rodents, and mutations in the human CART gene are associated with depression and anxiety. We measured CART-like immunoreactivity (-LI) in genetic rat models of dep

An indication for deconfinement in Au plus Au collisions at RHIC

We present simultaneous, quality fits to final BRAHMS, PHOBOS, STAR and PHENIX data on particle spectra and two-particle Bose-Einstein or HBT correlations as measured in Au+Au collisions at root(S)NN = 130 GeV. Using the Buda-Lund hydro model, the best fit is achieved when the most central 1/8th of the particle emitting volume is superheated to T > T-c = 170 MeV. In contrast, we find no indication

Cerebral excitatory amino acids and Na+,K+-ATPase activity during resuscitation of severely hypoxic newborn piglets

We tested the hypothesis that early brain recovery in hypoxic newborn piglets is improved by resuscitating with an O2 supply close to the minimum level required by the newborn piglet brain. Severely hypoxic 2-5-d-old anaesthetized piglets were randomly divided into three resuscitation groups: hypoxaemic (n = 8), 21% O2 (n = 8), and 100% O2 groups (n = 8). The hypoxaemic group was mechanically vent

Clinical recording of laser-induced fluorescence spectra for evaluation of tumour demarcation feasibility in selected clinical specialities

Laser-induced autofluorescence spectra from humans were recorded in vivo at three different clinics in a study aimed at investigating the capability of this method to discriminate between malignant tumours and normal surrounding tissues. For the recordings a mobile trolley with the necessary equipment was constructed for use in an examination room or in an operating theatre environment. Laser ligh

Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of enzyme-hydrolysed carboxymethylcellulose for investigation of enzyme selectivity and substituent pattern

A series of celloendoglucanases: Bacillus agaradhaerens Cel 5a, Humicola insolens Cel 5a, H. insolens Cel 7b, H. insolens Cel 45a, Trichoderma reesei Cel 7b, and T reesei Cel 45a were used to hydrolyse carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and the hydrolysis products were investigated with a novel liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) method. Separation was achieved using a graphitised carbon chr

Hand Mobility in Scleroderma (HAMIS) test: the reliability of a novel hand function test.

Objective Hand Mobility in Scleroderma (HAMIS) is a new hand function test developed for adults who have systemic sclerosis. HAMIS consists of 9 items designed to measure all movements assessed in an ordinary range of motion (ROM)-measured hand test. The aim of this study was to examine the reliability of the test. Methods Two observers (one occupational therapist and one physiotherapist) perform

Hyperfine structure and isotope shift of highly excited barium-I states

High-resolution laser-spectroscopy measurements of hyperfine structure and isotope shifts were performed for the 6snd 1 D 2 sequence of Ba-I in the regionn=12–24. Stepwise laser excitations of a collimated atomic beam were used. A strong influence on the hyperfine structure is observed at the perturbation atn=14, caused by interaction with the 5d7d configuration. Whereas the isotope shift for the

Projected changes in terrestrial carbon storage in Europe under climate and land use change, 1990-2100

Changes in climate and land use, caused by socio-economic changes, greenhouse gas emissions, agricultural policies and other factors, are known to affect both natural and managed ecosystems, and will likely impact on the European terrestrial carbon balance during the coming decades. This study presents a comprehensive European Union wide (EU15 plus Norway and Switzerland, EU*) assessment of potent

A nested case-control study of intrauterine exposure to persistent organochlorine pollutants in relation to risk of type 1 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of type 1 diabetes in Europe is increasing at a rate of about 3% per year and there is also an increasing incidence throughout the world. Type 1 diabetes is a complex disease caused by multiple genetic and environmental factors. Persistent organochlorine pollutants (POPs) have been suggested as a triggering factor for developing childhood type 1 diabetes. The aim of this

Risk factors for depressive disorders in the Lundby cohort - A 50 year prospective clinical follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Depressive disorders are common and disabling. The Lundby Study is a prospective study of a community sample that started in 1947(N=2550). In 1957, 1013 newcomers were added. The latest field investigation was carried out in 1997. AIM: To identify risk factors for depressive disorders. METHOD: The Lundby database contains clinical assessments of the subjects made by psychiatrists. It a

Challenges in researching violence affecting health service delivery in complex security environments

Complex security environments are characterized by violence (including, but not limited to "armed conflict" in the legal sense), poverty, environmental disasters and poor governance. Violence directly affecting health service delivery in complex security environments includes attacks on individuals (e.g. doctors, nurses, administrators, security guards, ambulance drivers and translators), obstruct

Serum osteocalcin levels do not change during rapidly induced hypercalcemia in healthy subjects

Since osteocalcin has been suggested to play a role in calcium homeostasis, we investigated its serum levels in 6 healthy subjects during a rapid calcium infusion. Serum levels of intact parathyroid hormone (PTH), 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25-(OH) D3] and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25-(OH)2 D3] were also determined. The calcium infusion increased plasma-ionized calcium levels from 1.25 +/- 0.04 to 1.54
