Mapping the Past : Geographically Linking an Early 20th Century Swedish Encyclopedia with Wikidata

In this paper, we describe the extraction of all the location entries from a prominent Swedish encyclopedia from the early 20th century, the Nordisk Familjebok 'Nordic Family Book.' We focused on the second edition called Uggleupplagan, which comprises 38 volumes and over 182,000 articles. This makes it one of the most extensive Swedish encyclopedias. Using a classifier, we first determined the ca

David Hume

This entry is intended to provide the reader with an overview of the central themes and arguments found in David Hume's (1711–1776) contributions to the philosophy of religion. The topics covered include the argument from design and the cosmological argument; the problem of evil; miracles and revealed religion; the natural history of religion; and Hume's philosophy of irreligion and atheism.

Critical needs to close monitoring gaps in pan-tropical wetland CH4 emissions

Global wetlands are the largest and most uncertain natural source of atmospheric methane (CH4). The FLUXNET-CH4 synthesis initiative has established a global network of flux tower infrastructure, offering valuable data products and fostering a dedicated community for the measurement and analysis of methane flux data. Existing studies using the FLUXNET-CH4 Community Product v1.0 have provided inval

The short-time iterative adaptive approach : an effective analysis tool for complex non-stationary vibrations

The short-time iterative adaptive approach is a spectral estimation alternative to the short-time Fourier transform for non-stationary vibration analysis. This technique offers a reduction in leakage effects and a higher resolution in exchange for a higher computational complexity. The short-time iterative adaptive approach can be summarized as a high-resolution data-dependent approach which has b

Massive MIMO-based Localization and Mapping Exploiting Phase Information of Multipath Components

In this paper, we present a robust multipath-based localization and mapping framework that exploits the phases of specular multipath components (MPCs) using a massive multiple-input multipleoutput (MIMO) array at the base station. Utilizing the phase information related to the propagation distances of the MPCs enables the possibility of localization with extraordinary accuracy even with limited ba

Sparse optimization for nonlinear group delay mode estimation

Nonlinear group delay signals with frequency-varying characteristics are common in a wide variety of fields, for instance, structural health monitoring and fault diagnosis. For such applications, the signal is composed of multiple modes, where each mode may overlap in the frequency-domain. The resulting decomposition and forming of time-frequency representations of the nonlinear group delay modes

Fast and efficient minimal solvers for quadric based camera pose estimation

In this paper we address absolute camera pose estimation. An efficient (and standard) way to solve this problem, is to use sparse keypoint correspondences. In many cases point features are not available, or are unstable over time and viewing conditions. We propose a framework based on silhouettes of quadric surfaces, with special emphasis on cylinders. We provide mathematical analysis of the probl

Relative Pose from Cylinder Silhouettes

In this paper we propose minimal solvers for relative pose estimation for two views of the projected silhouettes of two 3D cylinders. Using such line features instead of the standard point feature correspondences means more stable information (i.e. more stable to lighting condition, seasons, changes in environment etc.). Such features also lead to more compact and semantically interpretable repres

Python for Natural Language Processing : Programming with NumPy, scikit-learn, Keras, and PyTorch: Third Edition

Since the last edition of this book (2014), progress has been astonishing in all areas of Natural Language Processing, with recent achievements in Text Generation that spurred a media interest going beyond the traditional academic circles. Text Processing has meanwhile become a mainstream industrial tool that is used, to various extents, by countless companies. As such, a revision of this book was

Fingerprint Synthesis from Diffusion Models and Generative Adversarial Networks

We present novel approaches involving generative adversarial networks and diffusion models in order to synthesize high-quality, live, and spoof fingerprint images while preserving features such as uniqueness and diversity. We generate live fingerprints from noise with a variety of methods, and we use image translation techniques to translate live fingerprint images to spoof. To generate different

Linking Named Entities in Diderot's Encyclopédie to Wikidata

Diderot's Encyclopédie is a reference work from XVIIIth century in Europe that aimed at collecting the knowledge of its era. Wikipedia has the same ambition with a much greater scope. However, the lack of digital connection between the two encyclopedias may hinder their comparison and the study of how knowledge has evolved. A key element of Wikipedia is Wikidata that backs the articles with a grap

Discriminating Against Unrealistic Interpolations in Generative Adversarial Networks

Interpolations in the latent space of deep generative models is one of the standard tools to synthesize semantically meaningful mixtures of generated samples. As the generator function is non-linear, commonly used linear interpolations in the latent space do not yield the shortest paths in the sample space, resulting in non-smooth interpolations. Recent work has therefore equipped the latent space

The American Way? Swedish-American returnees in local Swedish politics during the 1920s

Swedish emigration to America is a topic that does not hold a major position in Swedish historical research anymore. At one time, during the 1960s and 1970s, there were a major research project, Sweden and America after 1860, that focused primarily on the reasons of the migration, the demographics of the migration and to some extent what happened to the emigrants in America. The research project d
