Time-Resolved Spectroelectrochemical Dynamics of Carotenoid 8’-apo-β-Carotenal
This work examines the influence of applied external voltage in bulk electrolysis on the excited-state properties of 8′-apo-β-carotenal in acetonitrile by steady-state and ultrafast time-resolved absorption spectroscopy. The data collected under bulk electrolysis were compared with those taken without applied voltage. The steady-state measurements showed that although intensity of the S0-S2 absorp
EU Climate Policy after the Crisis
In the period 2009–2011, Member States discussed whether the EU should increase its emissions reduction target for 2020 beyond the existing 20%. This discussion has not resulted in any agreement, the different actors being deeply divided between those calling for a step-up to a higher target (for instance 30%) and those opposed to any kind of increase. The division can be seen as a result of a con
A longitudinal cohort study on the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori antibodies in Swedish children and adolescents.
The aim of this study was to monitor the Helicobacter pylori antibody seroprevalence of an asymptomatic cohort between the ages of 4 and 18 y. The H. pylori antibody titres in a longitudinally followed cohort of 168 native Swedish children (born between 1972 and 1974) were established at 4, 8, 12, 16, and 18 y of age. Seventeen children (10.1%) were found positive on at least one occasion when a p
Effects of pentobarbital on GABA-activated currents in acutely-isolated rat dentate gyrus granule neurons
Granule neurons from the rat dentate gyrus were acutely isolated and whole-cell currents recorded. Maximal enhancement of 7 muM gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA; EC30) evoked currents was obtained with 100 muM pentobarbital where the peak-current was 2.1 +/- 0.2 of control. One hundred muM pentobarbital alone evoked no current response whereas I mM pentobarbital elicited a current response that was 0
New treatment can result in access to more donor lungs and fewer complications after transplantations
A large amount of lungs donated yearly cannot be used for transplantation. Researchers at Skåne University Hospital and Lund University have conducted an animal study with results that give hope that more donor lungs could be used to save lives in the future. The researchers have started a pilot study to investigate if the treatment will have the same positive effects on human beings. About 190 or
EASD: Melatonin and risk for type 2-diabetes
This article is over 5 years old, and the information may therefore be outdated. One third of the population is more sensitive to melatonin and face a higher risk of getting typ 2-diabetes. Why this is so is a question for Claire Lyons to answer. Learn more about her and her research. Our body clock, or circadian rhythm, controls our daily activities over a 24h period but sometimes this rhythm can

Caught in the Middle? : Young offenders in the Swedish and German criminal justice systems
How should we respond to a criminal offence committed by a young person? It is obvious that this is a very complex question. Multiple factors play important roles: the offence itself, but also the juvenile’s background in terms of education, socialization, prior convictions, etc. Every case is unique, but the criminal legal system has to follow the principles of legal certainty and predictability. How should we respond to a criminal offence committed by a young person?
