Production and Analysis of Perdeuterated Lipids from Pichia pastoris Cells
Probing molecules using perdeuteration (i.e deuteration in which all hydrogen atoms are replaced by deuterium) is extremely useful in a wide range of biophysical techniques. In the case of lipids, the synthesis of the biologically relevant unsaturated perdeuterated lipids is challenging and not usually pursued. In this work, perdeuterated phospholipids and sterols from the yeast Pichia pastoris gr
Variation of polarizability in the [4n+2] annulene series: from [22]- to [66]-annulene
Using correlated ab initio methods, the polarizability of large [4n + 2]-annulenes is determined, showing that there exists an almost linear relation between the exaltation of magnetic susceptibility (a measure of aromaticity) and an equivalent enlargement of polarizability.
Measuring progress towards a ‘Green Energy Economy’: Proposing and scrutinising a multi-level evaluation framework for policy instruments
Numerous economic recovery packages have been implemented to stimulate green economic growth through the deployment of low-carbon technologies. The emerging literature shows, however, that there is substantial ambiguity and discrepancy about how to measure the performance of policy instruments driving a Green Economy in general, and in our case, a Green Energy Economy (GEE) in particular. Identifi
The dasyscyphins A similar to C and niveulone, new biologically active compounds from the ascomycete Dasyscyphus niveus
In the course of a screening for cytotoxic Compounds from fungi four new terpenoid metabolites, named dasyscyphins A, B, C, and niveulone were isolated from fermentations of Dasyscyphus niveus strain A0101. While dasyscyphin A (1) exhibited no significant biological activities in our test systems dasyscyphin B (2) and dasyscyphin C (3) showed cytotoxic activities against human (HepG2, Hela S3, U93
The 5 angstrom structure of heterologously expressed plant aquaporin SoPIP2;1
SoPIP2;1 is one of the major integral proteins in spinach leaf plasma membranes. In the Xenopus oocyte expression system its water channel activity is regulated by phosphorylation at the C terminus and in the first cytosolic loop. To assess its structure, SoPIP2;1 was heterologously expressed in Pichia pastoris as a His-tagged protein and in the non-tagged form. Both forms were reconstituted into
Climate influenced deposition on a low latitude Sheinwoodian carbonate ramp, Gotland, Sweden
The Sheinwoodian succession of Gotland comprises the Högklint, Tofta and Hangvar Formations and most of the Slite Group. The succession consists of hierarchically ordered shallow marine depositional cycles, produced by orbitally forced climate changes. During warmer and wetter intervals (climate maxima) more carbonate was produced than during the cooler and dryer climate minima. Higher carbonate p
Dijet angular distributions in proton-proton collisions at root s = 7 TeV and root s = 14 TeV
Dijet angular distributions provide an excellent tool for looking at high transverse momentum parton interactions in order to study both QCD and new physics processes. With the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) recently brought into use, an unprecedented energy regime has opened up. ATLAS is one of the experiments at the LHC. Its high performance calorimeter system providing near hermetic coverage in th
Physiological integration and morphological plasticity in extensive clonal plants
En fördel som klonala växter har är att dotterskott som fortsätteClonal plants show a large variation in physiological integration, i.e. the translocation of resources among ramets within the clone. As resource transport is costly, we hypothesized that plants from poor sites should be more highly integrated than plants from rich sites and that plants would benefit if they were plastic in their degree of integration. Tracers were used to study the transport of w
An integrated approach towards sustainable entrepreneurship - Experience from the TEST project in transitional economies
The challenge how to assist enterprises more effectively within industrial hot spots of the Danube River Basin in order to meet environmental standards while enhancing their competitiveness was addressed by the project Transfer of Environmentally Sound Technology (TEST). New, integrated approaches were developed and found to be effective in fostering organizational learning and helping to ensure i
(Z)-3-Dodecenoic acid Is the main component of full-body n-hexane extracts from two Acacia gall-inducing thrips (Thysanoptera) and may function as an alarm pheromone
A major interest in the gall-inducing thrips of Australia began with the discovery that some species have eusocial colonies. The origin of social castes remains one of the outstanding questions in evolutionary biology. The inference of the ancestral stage from study of solitary species is important to understanding the evolutionary history of semiochemicals in social species. Here we investigated

New general tools for constrained geometry optimizations
A modification of the constrained geometry optimization method by Anglada and Bofill (Anglada, J. M.; Bofill, J. M. J. Comput. Chem. 1997, 18, 992-1003) is designed and implemented. The changes include the choice of projection, quasi-line-search, and the use of a Rational Function optimization approach rather than a reduced-restricted-quasi-Newton-Raphson method in the optimization step. Furthermo
Antifungal Properties of Wheat Histones (H1-H4) and Purified Wheat Histone H1
Wheat (Triticum spp.) histones H1, H2, H3, and H4 were extracted, and H1 was further purified. The effect of these histones on specific fungi that may or may not be pathogenic to wheat was determined. These fungi included Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus fumigatus, Aspergillus niger, Fusarium oxysporum, Fusarium verticillioides, Fusarium solani, Fusarium graminearum, Penicillium digitatum, Penicill
Anticoagulation in patients at high risk of stroke without documented atrial fibrillation. Time for a paradigm shift?
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is currently considered a risk factor for stroke. Depending on the severity of clinical factors (risk scores) a recommendation for full anticoagulation is made. Although AF is most certainly a risk factor for ischemic stroke, it is not necessarily the direct cause of it. The causality of association between AF and ischemic stroke is questioned by the reported lack of tempo
Is our Sun a singleton?
All stars are formed in some form of cluster or association. These environments can have a much higher number density of stars than the field of the galaxy. Such crowded places are hostile environments: a large fraction of initially single stars will undergo close encounters with other stars or exchange into binaries. We describe how such close encounters and exchange encounters will affect the pr
Improving goniometer accuracy by compensating for individual transducer characteristics
Flexible goniometers are useful for direct movement measurements. Crosstalk due to rotation between the endblocks is well known. However, even without any rotation, some crosstalk can occur. The objective of this study was to elucidate the effect of, and compensate for, the inherent crosstalk in biaxial goniometers, with specific relevance for applications with one dominating movement direction. S
Lack of respiratory chain Complex I impairs alternative oxidase engagement and modulates redox signaling during elicitor-induced cell death in tobacco.
Alternative oxidase (AOX) functions in stress resistance by preventing accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), but little is known about in vivo partitioning of electron flow between AOX and the cytochrome pathway. We investigated the relationships between AOX expression and in vivo activity in Nicotiana sylvestris and the complex I–deficient CMSII mutant in response to a cell death elicito
