New method provides unique insight into the development of the human brain

This article is over 5 years old, and the information may therefore be outdated. Stem cell researchers at Lund University in Sweden have developed a new research model of the early embryonic brain. The aim of the model is to study the very earliest stages of brain to understand how different regions in the brain are formed during embryonic development. With this new insight, researchers hope to be

Controls on dissolved organic carbon export through surface runoff from loamy agricultural soils

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is one of the most active and mobile carbon pools, and thus an important component of the global carbon cycle. Previous research on DOC transport in the soil and on factors controlling DOC export towards the river system focused mainly on forest and wetland areas, with only limited information available from agricultural soils. We carried out rainfall simulations on

DNA in centromeres of Chironomus pallidivittatus

The centromeres of most higher eukaryotes are embedded within large regions of constitutive heterochromatin and consist of large quantities of highly repetitive DNA. Transposable elements are also found in these regions. However, a detailed mapping of such elements or other nonsatellite DNA embedded within the large blocks of centromeric repetitive DNA has not yet been made. The dipteran Chironomu

Future Communication Channels in China - A Case Study at Sandvik Mining and Construction in China

Purpose: The Chinese mining industry is the third biggest in the world in terms of scale and magnitude. Due to the growing importance of the Chinese market, Sandvik Mining and Construction is investing heavily in China. As a result, there is a need for a new marketing plan for China. The marketing efforts will increase much, but since the marketing department has been relatively undeveloped, there

Life on the balance beam – talking about mental health at work

Living with bipolar disorder means constantly balancing between extremes – something that can be particularly difficult if the diagnosis is met with silence and stigmatisation. To raise awareness of mental illness and why it concerns us all, including at work, five LTH departments have joined forces and invited speaker Henrik Wahlström. In his lecture, he shares his own experiences of bipolar diso

Drones offer new insights into boreal peatland CO2 emissions

Boreal peatlands store large amounts of carbon, but warmer and drier conditions caused by climate change may turn these ecosystems into carbon sources. Equipped with drones and thermal cameras Julia Kelly, who recently received her doctorate at the Centre for Environmental and Climate Science (CEC), has studied what factors affect the CO2 fluxes in peatland ecosystems. Boreal forests and peatlands

The Sample Service Coordinator guides our researchers through biobanking processes

Lena Ohlsson is a Sample Service Coordinator at Region Skåne’s Biobank, guiding researchers through the process of starting a sample collection in a biobank or using samples from other biobanks across Sweden. Region Skåne’s Biobank is part of Biobank Sweden, which is Sweden’s national infrastructure for biobanking. The infrastructure aims to provide Sweden with the best conditions for initiating a

Paleomagnetic study of NeoArchean-Paleoproterozoic dykes in the Kaapvaal Craton

431 oriented samples were collected from 27 dolerite dykes at 17 sites, belonging to 2.95, 2.65, and 1.90 Ga swarms, that trend SE, E and NE, respectively from the Bushveld Igneous Complex into the eastern Kaapvaal Craton (ages determined by Olsson et al., 2010; Olsson in Soderlund et al., this volume). Samples were analyzed for paleomagnetism and also anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS).

Induced morphological defenses in the wild: Predator effects on a mayfly, Drunella coloradensis

Phenotypic plasticity may enable organisms to optimize their phenotypes in environments that are heterogeneous over time or space. For example, inducible defenses are favored for prey populations faced with variable predation risk. We studied the impact of brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) on the development of defensive morphological characters in larvae of the mayfly, Drunella coloradensis, bo

The distinct seasonality of early modern casual labor and the short durations of individual working years: Sweden 1500-1800

Historical wage studies have never been able to truly or accurately address the changes in the working year. Real wages have almost always been based on the wages of unskilled and casual laborers, typically paid by the day. Their annual incomes are not clear or obvious – the income is directly dependent on how many days they work. Implicitly the literature has assumed that the number of days worke

Computational Studies of Metalloenzymes

Enzymes are involved in most reactions in nature. They are important both for the understanding of biological life and for reactions of industrial interest, e.g. in the production of artificial fertilizers, the production of biomass or biofuels. Enzymes with one or several metal ions are called metalloenzymes. In this thesis we study three different metalloenzymes, nitrogenase, lytic polysaccharid

Spatial and social transformations in a secondary city : the role of mobility in Sekondi-Takoradi, Ghana

Existing research on urban Ghana mainly focuses on processes occurring within the country’s major cities, thereby reproducing a trend within the social sciences to overlook the role of intermediate and secondary cities. This paper aims to address this shortcoming by exploring spatial and social transformations in Sekondi–Takoradi, one of Ghana’s secondary cities and the metropolitan area serving t

Spatially Coupled Hybrid Concatenated Codes

The main purpose of this paper is to make the study of spatially coupled turbo-like codes (SC-TCs) more complete by investigating the impact of spatial coupling on the thresholds of hybrid concatenated codes (HCCs). In our previous studies, we introduced some classes of SC-TCs and considered their density evolution (DE) analysis. The obtained results indicated that for a fixed coupling memory, bra
