Yngre svartgods : datering, funktion och produktion : en materialstudie av det yngre svartgodset från kv. Apotekaren 4, Lund

This essay should be regarded as an artifact study and as a foundation for continued research. As very little has been written about younger blackware, the focal point of this study is on key problems such as dating, function and production. The material of the study is from the excavation of Kv. Apotekaren 4, carried out 1979-1980. The stratigraphy of the site was well dated with dendrochronology

Direct Electron-Transfer Anisotropy of a Site-Specifically Immobilized Cellobiose Dehydrogenase

To study the direct electron transfer (DET) of the multicofactor enzyme cellobiose dehydrogenase (CDH) in regard to its orientation on an electrode surface, a recently published, maleimide-based immobilization method was used in combination with site-directed mutagenesis to establish different orientations on an electrode surface. CDH from Myriococcum thermophilum was chosen for this study because

Synchrony in lemming and vole populations in the Canadian Arctic

Population fluctuations may occur in synchrony among several rodent species at a given site, and they may occur in synchrony over large geographical areas. We summarize information on synchrony in lemmings and voles from the Canadian Arctic for the past 20 years. The most detailed available information is from the central Canadian Arctic, where snap-trap samples have been taken annually at several

Monte-Carlo Based Pricing of American Options Using Known Characteristics of the Expected Continuation Value Function

The problem of pricing American stock options is far more complex than pricing European options due to the possibility of early execution. This feature means that the decision to either hold on to the option or exercising it early must be continually evaluated, leading to closed form solutions such as the Black-Scholes Formula to not be applicable on American options written on dividend paying ass

Regional fördelning av skogsskador i förhållande till mängd SO2 under vegetationsperioden i norra Tjeckien

During the last decades the forest damage in the Black triangle region (where the borders of the Czech Republic, Germany and Poland meet) has increased rapidly. Many attempts to explain the widely spread damage has been done. To quantify the risk of damage, the expression "critical level" has been introduced. Critical level is the highest concentration of an acidifying compound that the

The best fixation target revisited : New insights from retinal eye tracking

In many tasks, participants are instructed to fixate a target. While maintaining fixation, the eyes nonetheless make small fixational eye movements, such as microsaccades and drift. Previous work has examined the effect of fixation point design on fixation stability and the amount and spatial extent of fixational eye movements. However, much of this work used video-based eye trackers, which have i

The Meridian - S02E07

A transcription of the seventh and last episode of season two. Nic: Welcome to the last episode of season two of the Meridian. It is April 15th and we are, once again, coming to you from Lund Observatory, in Sweden. Crossing our local meridian today we have a guest from the department of geology : PhD student Chiara Paleari, who has been studying ice cores and has discovered evidence of an ancient

Formulating an Optimization Problem for Minimization of Losses due to Utilities

Utilities, such as steam and cooling water, are often shared between several production areas at industrial sites, and the effects of disturbances in utilities could thus be hard to predict. In addition, production areas could be connected because of the product flow at the site. This paper introduces a simple modeling approach for modeling the relation between utility operation and production. Us

Rethinking the political economy of rural struggles in Turkey: : Space, structures and altered agencies

By focusing on recent water struggles in rural Turkey against run‐of‐the‐river hydropower plants (SHPs), the research delves into the societal and economic factors that enable or inhibit the emergence of strong mobilizations through a comparison of four localities of the Eastern Black Sea region. The main aim of the cross comparison is to determine whether there is a relationship between the forms

Learning of Parameters in Behavior Trees for Movement Skills

Reinforcement Learning (RL) is a powerful mathematical framework that allows robots to learn complex skills by trial-and-error. Despite numerous successes in many applications, RL algorithms still require thousands of trials to converge to high-performing policies, can produce dangerous behaviors while learning, and the optimized policies (usually modeled as neural networks) give almost zero expla

Migratory strategy and behavioral flexibility in response to available habitat for a declining seabird, the Caspian Tern (Hydroprogne caspia)

To reduce the costs and survive the challenges of migration, animals should flexibly respond to changing environmental conditions along the route. In long-distance migratory birds, available habitat can vary substantially and so individual flexibility is needed to optimally exploit foraging opportunities, particularly for species that have specialized diets. However, flexible behavioral responses Seabirds adjust their behavior to migrate over changing landscapes Tracking birds with GPS technology, like the one that lets us consult Google Maps in our phones, has given exciting insight into how they are able to fly thousands of kilometers in challenging conditions over oceans and deserts during migration. Yet there are many species with fascinating migratory strategies that have not been tr
