Evaluation of Wildland Fire Detection Methods Using Expert Input

Recently the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released their 6th Assessment reports which confirm that the impact of climate change is visible, e.g. through an increased weather volatility leading both to hotter drier weather and increased flooding in some regions globally. One clear example of this is the increased prevalence of wildfires in recent years and increasing wildfire potentialRecently the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released their 6th Assessment reports which confirm that the impact of climate change is visible, e.g. through an increased weather volatility leading both to hotter drier weather and increased flooding in some regions globally. Cost-effectiveness of de-escalated molecular subtype dependent use of neoadjuvant chemotherapy in patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer in a Swedish setting

Background: Guidelines recommend neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) and radical cystectomy (RC) for muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC). Current recommendations do not consider genomic profiles, although the Basal/Squamous (Ba/Sq) subtype is less likely to respond to NAC compared to Urothelial-like (Uro) and Genomically Unstable (GU) subtypes. The aim of this study is to perform cost-effectiveness a

Influence of Fuel and Technology on Particle Emissions from Biomass Cookstoves─Detailed Characterization of Physical and Chemical Properties

Globally, 3 billion people rely on solid biomass fuel for their everyday cooking, most often using inefficient cooking practices, leading to high exposure levels of household air pollution. This is subsequently associated with negative health and climate impact. Further, the inefficient use of biomass fuels applies pressure on natural forests, resulting in deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and

The current linear economic system is based on the extraction of natural resources, the transformation of raw materials and the disposal of waste, leading to the environmental and economic depletion of resources and society. The circular economy proposes the circularity of materials, evaluating post-consumption waste and proposing a waste hierarchy called preparation for reuse (PfR), as set out in

Estimation of the absorbed dose in simultaneous digital breast tomosynthesis and mechanical imaging

Purpose: Use of mechanical imaging (MI) as complementary to digital mammography (DM), or in simultaneous digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) and MI - DBTMI, has demonstrated the potential to increase the specificity of breast cancer screening and reduce unnecessary biopsies compared with DM. The aim of this study is to investigate the increase in the radiation dose due to the presence of an MI sens

Simulation of heterogeneity within breast lesions based upon Perlin noise

Steadily increasing use of computer-generated models sets high demands on the realistic representation of breast tissue and abnormalities. Previously, we demonstrated the use of Perlin noise to simulate breast lesions. Now, we expand the previous model by simulating heterogeneous lesion composition. We demonstrate a new approach to simulating 3D soft tissue lesions, with additional benefits of Per

Transboundary transportation of CO2 streams by ships : regulatory barriers for scaling up carbon capture and sub-seabed storage

Over the years, Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) has been recognized as a crucial element in the toolkit of measures to combat climate change. At the European Union (EU) level, CCS plays a vital role in climate policy, particularly in reducing CO2 emissions from hard-to-abate industries. However, no comprehensive legal framework covers all stages of CCS. These stages include carbon capture t

Rising rural body-mass index is the main driver of the global obesity epidemic in adults

Body-mass index (BMI) has increased steadily in most countries in parallel with a rise in the proportion of the population who live in cities 1,2 . This has led to a widely reported view that urbanization is one of the most important drivers of the global rise in obesity 3–6 . Here we use 2,009 population-based studies, with measurements of height and weight in more than 112 million adults, to re

Trends in adult body-mass index in 200 countries from 1975 to 2014 : A pooled analysis of 1698 population-based measurement studies with 19.2 million participants

Background Underweight and severe and morbid obesity are associated with highly elevated risks of adverse health outcomes. We estimated trends in mean body-mass index (BMI), which characterises its population distribution, and in the prevalences of a complete set of BMI categories for adults in all countries. Methods We analysed, with use of a consistent protocol, population-based studies that ha

Low-frequency noise in ferroelectric III-V vertical gate-all-around FETs

In this letter, we demonstrate low-frequency noise (LFN) characterization of an InAs vertical gate-all-around hafnium-zirconium oxide (HZO) ferroelectric field-effect transistor (FeFET). The LFN characteristics are investigated before and after ferroelectric switching for up to 1000 cycles in the FeFET. The evolution of such cycling reveals distinct differences in the LFN for the two polarization

Acoustophoresis in tumor cell enrichment

This chapter outlines the opportunities and current developments of label-free separation of circulating tumor cell (CTC) from blood cells using acoustophoresis. It describes two platforms that have been developed to enable subsequent evaluation of acoustophoresis in clinical settings. All nucleated cells in suspension flow along a microchannel wherein the cells are exposed to an acoustic field. T

Older persons' experiences with wearable sensor-based fall risk screening in free-living conditions - a qualitative study

BACKGROUND: Falls are common among older persons and can have a major impact on their lives. Wearable sensors used in free-living conditions (moving naturally in one's daily living environment) can be used to predict falls and fall risks. To understand if using the wearable sensors is an acceptable way for older persons to be screened for fall risks, it is important to have knowledge of older pers

A comprehensive characterisation of natural aerosol sources in the high Arctic during the onset of sea ice melt

The interactions between aerosols and clouds are still one of the largest sources of uncertainty in quantifying anthropogenic radiative forcing. To reduce this uncertainty, we must first determine the baseline natural aerosol loading for different environments. In the pristine and hardly accessible polar regions, the exact nature of local aerosol sources remains poorly understood. It is unclear ho

Digitizing the palate : exploring opportunities for digital transformation in the food industry

The modern food industry faces the challenge of catering to diverse consumer preferences while maintaining efficiency and profitability. Rapid shifts in consumer trends, emerging technologies, and evolving regulations make it difficult for companies to keep pace, often resulting in inefficiencies and lost opportunities. The vast amount of data generated across production, supply chains, and market

Attosecond Dynamics of Non-resonant Atomic Photoionization

The interaction of light with matter played a key role in the establishment of quantum mechanics, and each development of new light sources led to important advances in science, technology and society. An exciting area of physics has been opened with the new millennium, attosecond physics, where the motion of electrons can be studied at the fastest time scale ever reached with light. We review the

Shear force capacity of cross laminated timber beams : Numerical investigations of fracture behaviour

This paper deals with numerical investigations of cross laminated timber (CLT) beams. Previous investigations have revealed discrepancies between experimental test results and suggested design methods regarding shear force capacity of such beams. To gain further understanding of the failure behaviour and the shear force capacity, nonlinear finite element analyses have been performed, using a cohes

Impact of Layout on the RF Performance of Vertical In–Ga–As Nanowire MOSFETs

High-speed vertical In–Ga–As nanowire MOS field-effect transistor (MOSFET) measurements were analyzed through parametric layout models. Measurements from small and large transistors were used to fit dependencies on the number of gate fingers and the number of wires per finger. Extrapolations via intrinsic and parasitic elements reveal the optimal layout for peak frequency performance. To achieve a
