High-Rate QC LDPC Codes of Short and Moderate Length with Good Girth Profile

Irregular QC LDPC codes with parity-check matrices having different degree distributions are studied. A new algorithm for finding regular and irregular QC LDPC codes with a good girth profile as well as a good sliding-window girth is presented. As examples, simulation results for QC LDPC codes with good girth profile, rate R=4/5, and lengths about 1000, 2000, and 4000, constructed from base matric

Nudging, a tool for sustainable behaviour?

This study was conducted as part of a government commission which wasgiven to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (Swedish EPA) in 2014.The Environmental Protection Agency mandated the International Institutefor Industrial Environmental Economics (IIIEE) at Lund University to conducta research study on nudging. The study has served and will serve as a directinput to further strategic work

Biology – life on our planet

In the broad field of biology, our researchers study everything from small cells to large ecosystems. Research projects include the forces of evolution, unsung heroes of the soil, how animals navigate and seeking answers to the mystery of ageing. Animals with unique abilitiesHow do birds, insects and some other animal groups manage to keep a straight course over long distances? The fascinating abi

Climathon Lund 2018

Limiting climate Impact of plastics “Solutions to limit the climate impact of plastics” was the topic of the 2018 Climathon in Lund. The 24 hour hackathon gathered 54 participants and was thereby one of the larger among the 113 Climathons held simultaneous all around the world. Climathon in Lund was organised by a consortia of five very different organisations, Lunds Universitet, Lunds Kommun, Sys

A ground truth correspondence measure for benchmarking

Automatic localisation of correspondences for the construction of Statistical Shape Models from examples has been the focus of intense research during the last decade. Several algorithms are available and benchmarking is needed to rank the different algorithms. Prior work has focused on evaluating the quality of the models produced by the algorithms by measuring compactness, generality and specifi

Importance of HTML structural elements and metadata in automated subject classification

The aim of the study was to determine how significance indicators assigned to different Web page elements (internal metadata, title, headings, and main text) influence automated classification. The data collection that was used comprised 1000 Web pages in engineering, to which Engineering Information classes had been manually assigned. The significance indicators were derived using several differe

Review of microstructure modeling in solid oxide fuel cell electrodes

Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs) are widely studied for their advantages specially at high temperatures. The microscopic chemical reactions that occur in the cells have a strong influence on the cell performance although not much research has been done in this field yet. In order to do so, a numerical model of the microstructure of the electrodes, where the reactions take place, is needed. Different

Security Services and Authoritarian Stability - A Comparative Case Study of Egypt, Jordan, and Syria before the Arab Spring

This study tests the theory of Authoritarian Stability against the expectation that security services are essential for preventing the fall of the regime in Egypt, Jordan, and Syria in the lead up to the Arab Spring. A most similar comparative case study is used as method. Authoritarian stability is operationalised as the ruler maintaining the support from domestic elites and from external powers

Evaluation of the LPJ-GUESS crop model under ambient and elevated CO2 concentrations.

In the future atmospheric CO2 concentrations might exceed 550 ppm according to the RCP8.5 scenario by mid-century from our current 410 ppm, while our world population is projected to surpass the 9.7 billion threshold within the same time span. This challenge leads to the raising of questions addressing future food security. Elevated CO2 has been shown to not only increase photosynthetic rates in
