Findings from a pilot study on the distribution, function and phonetic realization of the filler EH in interviews from SweDia2000 interviews are presented. The results show that EH occurs almost exclusively after function words at the beginning of constituents. The phonetic realization of EH was seen to be of three basic forms: a middle-high vowel (e.g. [e], [ɛ], [ə]), a vowel+nasal (e.g. [ɛm], [ə

The Common Correlated Effects (CCE) methodology is now well established for the analysis of factor-augmented panel models. Yet, it is often neglected that the pooled variant is biased unless the cross-section dimension (N) of the dataset dominates the time series length (T). This is problematic for inference with typical macroeconomic datasets where T often equal or larger than N. Given that an an

This paper analyzes the determinants of the labor-capital split in national incomefor 20 countries since the late 1800s. Our main identification strategy focuseson unique historical quasi-experimental events: i) the introduction of universalsuffrage, ii) close election wins of left-wing governments, iii) decolonization, iv)unionization shocks, and v) wars. We examine if international trade improves labor market integration of immigrants in Sweden. Immigrants participate substantially less than natives in the labor market. However, trading with a foreign country is expected to increase the demand for immigrants from that country. By hiring immigrants, a firm may access foreign knowledge and networks needed to overcome information frictions in trade.

What are the political effects of a nuclear accident? Following the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, environmentalist parties were elected to parliaments in several nations. This paper uses Chernobyl as a natural experiment creating variation in radioactive fallout exposure over Sweden. I match municipality-level data on cesium ground contamination with election results for the anti-nuclear Green Party, w

We examine the impact of competition on a firm's incentive to relax the standards of its inspection to its customers in the Swedish motor vehicle inspection market, which is heavily regulated and consciously designed to mitigate incentives to deviate from the regulation. We use a panel dataset representing 22.5 million car roadworthiness tests during the period 2010--2015. Fixed effects and instru

This study examines the effects of super-fast internet connections on the academic achievement of students in upper secondary school. We link detailed register data on around 250,000 students to local levels of access to optic fiber broadband, in order to estimate a causal effect of broadband on student GPA. We show that reaching full coverage in the student’s parish of residence causes a GPA redu

We evaluate a natural experiment at a Swedish university, in which students were randomized to either taking all their courses online, or to have some courses online and some on campus (blended learning). Our setting creates two groups for the online courses: One group with no access to campus whatsoever, and one group treated with campus classes in parallel, but unrelated, courses. We show that c

ABSTRACT AND INTRODUCTION Theories of text and discourse have long assumed the existence of semantic objects called discourse referents, "things being talked about and referred to by pronouns and definite noun phrases"(cf. e.g. Karttunen (1976), Sigurd (1982), Sidner (1983)). Such referents are also often alluded to in sentence grammars, above all in theories of pronominalization and control -ofte

Many economic models assume that random variables follow normal (Gaussian) distributions. Yet, real-world variables may be non-normally distributed. How sensitive are these models’ predictions to distribution misspecifications? This paper addresses the question in the context of linear-quadratic beauty contests played by rationally inattentive players. It breaks with the assumption that the (commo

With a specific emphasis on the imperial durbar as symbolic form and ritual content, the paper explores how the British, until 1857 in the guise of the East India Company, drew on and gradually adjusted local customs and notions of rightful authority as part of their annexation and subjection of South Asian polities. The paper suggests that the the imperial durbars of 1877, 1903 and 1911, as well

In the us, test score gaps by socioeconomic status and race increase with city size. This paper examines to what extent residential sorting on school quality can explain this fact. We combine 15 years of data on public elementary school studentsin North Carolina with geocoded school locations and proxy city size with a measure of school density in a local labor market. Assortative matching between

I perform a narrow and wide replication of the labor force participation analyses in Bertand,Pan, and Kamenica (2015), which finds a negative relationship between realized and predicted female breadwinning and wives’ labor force participation. Their results replicate in a narrow sense, even when samples from the same data sources cannot be perfectly reproduced. In the broader replication, I test w

Reflexivity without reflexives Eric Reuland, Anna Volkova1 Utrecht institute of Linguistics OTS, Universiteit Utrecht Background: What prevents pronominals from being locally bound? Does this a) reflect an intrinsic property of pronominals (Chomsky 1981), is it b) a relative (economy) effect, that only shows up where there is a more dedicated competitor (see from different perspectives, Safir 2004
