AI for Dementia

The current healthcare system in Sweden suffers from major problems when it comes cost-efficiency and delivery of healthcare services. Unsustainable increase in healthcare cost over the past few decades has led to that Government funding is no longer keeping pace with increasing demand and complexity. There a several ways to address this issue, one is to implement a new healthcare delivery model w

Young people, who are convicted and subjected to closed institutional youth care detention (LSU) runs, due to their young age, a particularly high risk to reoffend. Swedish criminal statistics shows that as many as 60 percent relapse into crime within a year. The purpose of this essay is to investigate the causes that can be attributed to relapse into c

Beslut om vårdnad och umgänge - när våld har förekommit i familjen

When a child's parents are divorced or separated and violence has occurred between them, several problems can arise in custody cases. The purpose of this thesis is to study these problems and the possibilities to solve them. The first problem I study in this thesis is the different parties' rights which often rise in opposition to one other. These rights refers to the abused parent's r

Modeling pollinating bee visitation rates in heterogeneous landscapes from foraging theory

Pollination by bees is important for food production. Recent concerns about the declines of both domestic and wild bees, calls for measures to promote wild pollinator populations in farmland. However, to be able to efficiently promote and prioritize between measures that benefit pollinators, such as modified land use, agri-environment schemes, or specific conservation measures, it is important to

Access to human rights for persons using prosthetic and orthotic assistive devices in Sierra Leone

Purpose: To evaluate the access to human rights of persons with disabilities who use prosthetic and orthotic assistive devices, and to compare groups of participants in terms of gender, residential area, income, and type and level of assistive device. The addressed areas were rights to: health, a standard of living adequate for health, education, marry and establish a family, vote, and work. Metho

Assistive technology policy : a position paper from the first global research, innovation, and education on assistive technology (GREAT) summit

Increased awareness, interest and use of assistive technology (AT) presents substantial opportunities for many citizens to become, or continue being, meaningful participants in society. However, there is a significant shortfall between the need for and provision of AT, and this is patterned by a range of social, demographic and structural factors. To seize the opportunity that assistive technology

Environmental effects on flying migrants revealed by radar

Migratory animals are affected by various factors during their journeys, and the study of animal movement by radars has been instrumental in revealing key influences of the environment on flying migrants. Radars enable the simultaneous tracking of many individuals of almost all sizes within the radar range during day and night, and under low visibility conditions. We review how atmospheric conditi

Cloud-Assisted Model Predictive Control

In this paper we present a computational offloading strategy with graceful degradation for executing Model Predictive Control using the cloud. We show a method which allows for seamless control assistance and design of flexible controllers using the edge cloud. We examplify using a cyber-physical-system at high frequency and illustrate how the system can be improved while keeping the computational

Estimating the SARS-CoV-2 infected population fraction and the infection-to-fatality ratio: A data-driven case study based on Swedish time series data

We demonstrate that finite impulse response (FIR) models can be applied to analyze the time evolution of an epidemic with its impact on deaths and healthcare strain. Using time series data for COVID-19-related cases, ICU admissions and deaths from Sweden, the FIR model gives a consistent epidemiological trajectory for a simple delta filter function. This results in a consistent scaling between the

Learning from long time series of harvest and population data : Swedish lessons for European goose management

Goose management in Europe is faced by multiple challenges, as some species are declining and in need of conservation actions, while other populations have become very abundant, resulting in calls for increased harvest. Sweden has long-Term series of harvest data and counts of breeding and autumn-staging geese. We used national data (indices) for greylag goose, bean goose and Canada goose to study

Missions - A Small Step, Or A Giant Leap?

Missions are being discussed widely within the European Union and beyond as a tool to steer policy, innovation, and research. Similar to other missions – to the moon, to cure cancer, and to eradicate smallpox – the missions-oriented approach seeks to set bold and radical goals to tackle our pressing environmental and social challenges. In this episode, we discuss the missions-oriented approach for

Modeling gas exchange and biomass production in West African Sahelian and Sudanian ecological zones

West African Sahelian and Sudanian ecosystems provide essential services to people and also play a significant role within the global carbon cycle. However, climate and land use are dynamically changing, and uncertainty remains with respect to how these changes will affect the potential of these regions to provide food and fodder resources or how they will affect the biosphere-atmosphere exchange

Domain-adversarial neural network for improved generalization performance of gleason grade classification

When training a deep learning model, the dataset used is of great importance to make sure that the model learns relevant features of the data and that it will be able to generalize to new data. However, it is typically difficult to produce a dataset without some bias toward any specific feature. Deep learning models used in histopathology have a tendency to overfit to the stain appearance of the t

The Impact of Broccoli II & Tomato II on European patents in conventional breeding, GMO’s and Synthetic Biology : The grand finale of a juicy patents tale?

On 25 March 2015, the Enlarged Board of Appeal of the European Patent Office (EBA) finally delivered its’ much awaited decisions on the consolidated referrals G2/12 (“Tomato II”) and G2/13 (“Broccoli II”). The EBA affirmed that products, namely plants or parts thereof, obtained by essentially biological processes are – unlike individual plant varieties – principally patentable under the European P

Geospatial mapping of surgical systems for earthquake emergency planning in Guerrero, Mexico : an ecological study

BACKGROUND: Accessibility to surgical services can impact earthquake preparedness and response. We aimed to estimate the population with timely access to surgical care in Guerrero, a Mexican state with high tectonic activity, and identify populations at risk in the event of an earthquake.METHODS: We conducted an ecological study using open government data. We extracted data from Guerrero municipal

Bioengineered nerve conduits and wraps for peripheral nerve repair of the upper limb

Background: Traumatic peripheral nerve injury is common and incurs significant cost to individuals and society. Healing following direct nerve repair or repair with autograft is slow and can be incomplete. Several bioengineered nerve wraps or devices have become available as an alternative to direct repair or autologous nerve graft. Nerve wraps attempt to reduce axonal escape across a direct repai

Turbulent burning velocity and its related statistics of ammoniahydrogenair jet flames at high Karlovitz number : Effect of differential diffusion

To clarify the role of differential diffusion in highly turbulent premixed flames, a series of turbulent premixed ammonia/hydrogen/air flames were investigated using the NH-PLIF diagnostics. The investigated flames have almost the same laminar burning velocity, SL, but are characterized by different Lewis number, Le, from 0.56 to 1.77. The Karlovitz number, Ka, of these flames ranges from 11 to 10
