Strategic-plan-2017-2026

Strategic Plan 2017–2026 | LUND UNIVERSITY 2 STRATEGIC PLAN 2017–2026 Preface The University is to generate and communicate knowledge based on research – a task which is more important today than perhaps ever before. A time when information is disseminated in seconds places great demands on the abil- ity of citizens to evaluate and critically examine statements. The University prepares new generat

Funding models in palliative care : Lessons from international experience

Background: Funding models influence provision and development of palliative care services. As palliative care integrates into mainstream health care provision, opportunities to develop funding mechanisms arise. However, little has been reported on what funding models exist or how we can learn from them. Aim: To assess national models and methods for financing and reimbursing palliative care. Desi

Validation of adverse events after hip arthroplasty : A Swedish multi-centre cohort study

Objectives Preventing adverse events (AEs) after orthopaedic surgery is a field with great room for improvement. A Swedish instrument for measuring AEs after hip arthroplasty based on administrative data from the national patient register is used by both the Swedish Hip Arthroplasty Register and the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions. It has never been validated and its accuracy

Marked and rapid change of bone shape in acutely ACL injured knees – an exploratory analysis of the Kanon trial

Background: To investigate changes in knee 3D bone shape over the first 5 years after acute anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in participants of the randomized controlled KANON-trial. Methods: Serial MR images over 5 years from 121 young (32 women, mean age 26.1 years) adults with an acute ACL tear in a previously un-injured knee were analyzed using statistical shape models for bone. A match

Distribution of iridium and associated geochemistry across the Triassic-Jurassic boundary in sections at Kuhjoch and Kendlbach, Northern Calcareous Alps, Austria

Samples from strata spanning the Triassic-Jurassic boundary at the GSSP at Kuhjoch and at Kendlbachgraben were studied by NAA, XRF and combustion analysis to determine Ir levels and associated geochemistry. The results are compared to previously determined carbon isotope stratigraphy at these sections. Ir concentrations in the limestones of the Kössen Formation at Kuhjoch are very low (<. 10 pg/g)

Causes and contributing factors of maternal mortality in Bosaso District of Somalia. A retrospective study of 30 cases using a Verbal Autopsy approach

Background: Somali women suffer from one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. Somalia characterises a specific low-income country situation with a mix of newly urbanized and nomadic culture combined with a frail health care infrastructure set in a post-conflict era. Very little is known about the effects that these contextual factors can have on maternal mortality. Objectives: To

Ultrafast photoisomerization of pinacyanol : Watching an excited state reaction transiting from barrier to barrierless forms

Photoisomerization of 1,1′-diethyl-2,2′-carbocyanine iodide (pinacyanol) in alcohols was investigated by means of femtosecond time-resolved absorption spectroscopy. Only one out of two possible types of photoisomer was found. Viscosity-dependent kinetics indicate that the excited state dynamics consist of two parts, associated with a barrier-crossing observed in the blue side of stimulated emissio

Implementation and applications of robotic surgery within gynecologic oncology and gynecology; Analysis of the first thousand cases

Objective. To describe the effects of implementing a robotic surgical program within gynecologic oncology and gynecology at a tertiary referral hospital. Design: Prospective study. Setting: University Hospital, Lund and Lund University, Sweden. Methods. Based on prospective data retrieved for all patients, we evaluated intraoperative times, estimated blood loss, rate of conversion and rate of intr

Temperature dependent intercalation of molten 1-hexadecanol into Brodie graphite oxide

Intercalation of very long molecules into the structure of multi-layered graphene oxide (GO) was studied using example of 1-hexadecanol (C16), an alcohol molecule with 16 carbon atoms. Brodie graphite oxide (BGO) immersed in excess of liquid C16 just above the melting point shows expansion of c-unit cell parameter from ∼6 Å to ∼48.76 Å forming a structure with two densely packed layers of C16 mole

Air pollution measurements and land-use regression in urban sub-saharan Africa using low-cost sensors—possibilities and pitfalls

Air pollution is recognized as the most important environmental factor that adversely affects human and societal wellbeing. Due to rapid urbanization, air pollution levels are increasing in the Sub-Saharan region, but there is a shortage of air pollution monitoring. Hence, exposure data to use as a base for exposure modelling and health effect assessments is also lacking. In this study, low-cost s

Epidemiology, bacteriology, and clinical characteristics of HACEK bacteremia and endocarditis : a population-based retrospective study

The objective was to describe the epidemiology, bacteriology, clinical presentation, risk factors for endocarditis (IE), diagnostic workup, and outcome of patients with bacteremia caused by the non-influenzae Haemophilus, Aggregatibacter, Cardiobacterium, Eikenella, and Kingella genera (HACEK). A retrospective population-based cohort of patients with bacteremia collected from 2012 to 2017 was iden

Experimental and modelling study of 1CH2 in premixed very rich methane flames

Stoichiometric and very rich (1.5 ≤ ɸ ≤ 1.9) laminar flat flames of methane have been investigated using nonintrusive laser diagnostics. Premixed CH4 + O2 + N2 flames were stabilized at a pressure of 30 ± 0.3 Torr. Temperature profiles were obtained using laser-induced fluorescence of OH. Absolute concentration profiles of singlet methylene, 1CH2, were measured by intracavity laser absorption spec

Surgical treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism in elderly patients : an institutional experience

Background: Secondary hyperparathyroidism in elderly fragile patients presents clinical difficulties due to severity of symptoms and related comorbidity. The optimal surgical approach for this group of patients is still debated. Aim: The aim of the study was to define the optimal technique of parathyroidectomy in elderly patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism. Methods: Retrospective analysis

There's more to the multimedia effect than meets the eye : is seeing pictures believing?

Textbooks in applied mathematics often use graphs to explain the meaning of formulae, even though their benefit is still not fully explored. To test processes underlying this assumed multimedia effect we collected performance scores, eye movements, and think-aloud protocols from students solving problems in vector calculus with and without graphs. Results showed no overall multimedia effect, but i

Too Sharp for its Own Good – Tool Edge Deformation Mechanisms in the Initial Stages of Metal Cutting

© 2017 Metal cutting simulations have become an important part of cutting tool design and the research in the field in general. One of the most important aspects of modeling is the accuracy of the tool geometry. 3D microscopy is used for measuring the tool edge radius with good accuracy. However, especially with sharp tools, i.e. small tool edge radii, the measurements, no matter how accurate, are
