Autoimmun sköldkörtelsjukdom eller autoimmun tyreoidit är vanligt förekommande hos barn som utvecklat autoimmun (typ 1) diabetes. Tyreoideaperoxidas (TPO) och tyreoglobulin (THG) finns i sköldkörteln och vid autoimmun tyreoidit är de mål för immunförsvarets attack. Autoantikroppar mot TPO (TPOA) och THG (THGA) är biomarkörer för autoimmun tyreoidit och kan påvisas långt innan sjukdomen bryter ut.
Många föräldrar i TEDDY-studien underskattade sitt barns risk att utveckla autoimmun typ 1-diabetes trots detaljerad information när samtycke gavs till studien. Information om barnets förhöjda risk gavs också kontinuerligt under TEDDY-studiens gång. I och med att barnen fyllt 10 år blev det möjligt att ta reda på hur barnen uppfattade sin risk att utveckla autoimmun typ 1-diabetes.Barnen har löpan
