AI can both strengthen and undermine trust in healthcare

When used as a diagnostic aid, artificial intelligence (AI) can help physicians save time and make more accurate diagnoses. However, physicians should also understand and be able to explain the computer’s decision to the patient to avoid jeopardising trust, says AI researcher Stefan Larsson. AI also puts us at a crossroads: do we want to reflect the world or change it? Stefan Larsson is a research

Leaving avoidance manoeuvres to the car reduces the risk of an accident

If you wander off the lane or touch the lane marking, your car tells you about it, and the most recent models can even gently take you back to the middle of the lane. Research in ELLIIT has shown that if the car also provides help during swift avoi- dance manoeuvres, the number of accidents could be reduced by around 80%. Blood biomarker identified that predicts type 2 diabetes many years before diagnosis

A large study led by Lund University in Sweden has identified a protein in the blood that could predict type 2 diabetes up to nineteen years before the onset of the disease. waiting... (a Christmas Essay)

The occurrences around COVID-19 are dramatic and still at the end of 2021 the pandemic is still ongoing with strong impact on the ways of living of many. For the ones, not immediately struck by the virus or its’ chain reactions, life can be characterised by slowness. The catastrophic is lurking like an undertow running below the mundane. Beneath Mundania. Corona-time is a liminal state, a state of

Nanowire transistor with integrated memory to enable future supercomputers

For many years, a bottleneck in technological development has been how to get processors and memories to work faster together. Now, researchers at Lund University in Sweden have presented a new solution integrating a memory cell with a processor, which enables much faster calculations, as they happen in the memory circuit itself. Astronomers determine the age of three mysterious baby stars at the heart of the Milky Way

Note: This PR was published by Lund University on 01/12/2023 Through analysis of high-resolution data from a ten-metre telescope in Hawaii, researchers at Lund University in Sweden have succeeded in generating new knowledge about three stars at the very heart of the Milky Way. The stars proved to be unusually young with a puzzling chemical composition that surprised the researchers. The study, whi

Culture Night 2024

With over 1300 visitors at the telescopes and in the planetarium, it is safe to say that Culture Night 2024 was a great success. Arranging astronomy events on Culture Night is always a bit difficult since we do not know in advance if the skies are going to be clear.  We had luck with us this year.  The weather was nice and sunny during the day and once the Sun set we could bring out the telescopes
