There is now considerable evidence for the involvement of K+ channels in nitric oxide (NO) induced relaxation of smooth muscles including the myometrium. In order to assess whether apamin-sensitive K+ channels play a role in NO - induced relaxation of the human uterus, we have studied the effect of specific blockers of these channels on the relaxation of myometrium from non-pregnant women. In vitr

The non-peptide ET-receptor antagonist Bosentan was used to investigate the role of endogenous endothelin-1 (ET-1) in the development of the Sephadex-induced lung inflammation in the rat. Intratracheal instillation of Sephadex caused a 60-fold rise in endothelin-1-like-immunoreactivity (ET-1-LI) in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) concomitant with development of lung oedema, an influx of inflam

1. Several recent in vitro studies have suggested that production of nitric oxide (NO) from the islet NO system may have an important regulatory influence on the secretion of insulin and glucagon. In the present paper we have investigated, mainly with an in vivo approach, the influence and specificity of the NO synthase (NOS) blocker NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) on L-arginine-induced

The title compound, [PdBr(C24H49P2)], has a distorted square-planar coordination geometry with the P, C, P'-tridentate ligand forming two five-membered chelate rings. The Br atom is displaced from the square plane by 0.560 (6) angstrom.

We consider the problem of finding a long, simple path in an undirected graph. We present a polynomial-time algorithm that finds a path of length Omega((log L/log log L)(2)), where L denotes the length of the longest simple path in the graph. This establishes the performance ratio O(n( log log n/log n)(2)) for the longest path problem, where n denotes the number of vertices in the graph.

Dyschondrosteosis (DCO; also called Leri-Weill syndrome) is a skeletal dysplasia characterised by disproportionate short stature because of mesomelic shortening of the limbs. Madelung deformity is a feature of DCO that is distinctive, variable in expressivity and frequently observed. Mutations of the SHOX (short stature homeobox-containing) gene have been previously described as causative in DCO.

Excited states in 102Sn have been identified for the first time, in an in-beam γ-ray spectroscopic experiment. Two γ-ray transitions with energies 1472 and 497 keV following the decay of the seniority 6+ isomer with t1/2 = 1.0(5) μs were unambiguously assigned to 102Sn. Due to the very low cross section of about 2 μb for producing 102Sn in the reaction 50Cr(58Ni,1α2n), a highly selective detector

We report on the results of our recent theoretical and experimental investigations of a novel, room temperature electrical property of three-terminal ballistic junctions (TBJs). For a symmetric TBJ device, it is found that when finite voltages V-1 and V-r are applied in push-pull fashion, with V-1 = V and V-r = - V. to the left and right branches, the voltage output V-c from the central branch wil

Antigen presentation to T cells by MHC molecules is essential for adaptive immune responses. To determine the exact position of a gene affecting expression of MHC molecules, we finely mapped a previously defined rat quantitative trait locus regulating MHC class II on microglia in an advanced intercross line. We identified a small interval including the gene MHC class II transactivator (Mhc2ta) and

This study considers astrophysics, stellar and nebular astronomy in Sweden. Emphasis is on the role of scientific technologies and practice, and the emergence of a modern observational astronomy, supplanting classical astronomy as the most vital field of Swedish astronomy. The introduction of photography and spectroscopy is discussed, mainly focused on Nils Dunér. The mechanical nature of the pho

The interaction between three triblock copolymers of poly(ethylene oxide) and poly(propylene oxide), EOnPOmEOn, and the ionic surfactants sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS, and hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride, CTAC, has been studied in dilute aqueous solution using differential scanning calorimetry, DSC, and isothermal titration calorimetry. The length of the PPO block was the same in all three copo

OBJECTIVE: The reason that only a minority of smokers develop chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is still largely unknown. Glycosylation defects are involved in the pathological mechanisms in cystic fibrosis (CF), where chronic progressive obstructive lung disease dominates the clinical picture. Whether defects of protein glycosylation occur in COPD has not previously been examined. Incr
