Missed opportunity? Worsening breathlessness as a harbinger of death : A cohort study
The aim of the study was to explore trajectories of breathlessness intensity by function and life-limiting illness diagnosis in the last 3 weeks of life in palliative care patients. A prospective, consecutive cohort study obtained point-of-care data of patients of Silver Chain Hospice Care Service (Perth, Australia) over the period 2011–2014 (n=6801; 51494 data-points). Breathlessness intensity (0
Lymph node CXCL17 messenger RNA : A new prognostic biomarker for colon cancer
Lymph node metastasis is the most important prognostic characteristic of colorectal cancer. Carcinoembryonic antigen messenger RNA was shown to detect tumor cells that have disseminated to lymph nodes of colorectal cancer patients and to be at least as good as the hematoxylin and eosin method to predict survival in colorectal cancer patients. CXCL17 was recently shown to be ectopically expressed i
APOGEE Data Releases 13 and 14 : Stellar Parameter and Abundance Comparisons with Independent Analyses
Data from the SDSS-IV/Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2) have been released as part of SDSS Data Releases 13 (DR13) and 14 (DR14). These include high-resolution H-band spectra, radial velocities, and derived stellar parameters and abundances. DR13, released in 2016 August, contained APOGEE data for roughly 150,000 stars, and DR14, released in 2017 August, added about
Draft Genome Sequence for the Tree Pathogen Phytophthora plurivora
Species from the genus Phytophthora are well represented among organisms causing serious diseases on trees. Phytophthora plurivora has been implicated in long-term decline of woodland trees across Europe. Here we present a draft genome sequence of P. plurivora, originally isolated from diseased European beech (Fagus sylvatica) in Malmö, Sweden. When compared with other sequenced Phytophthora speci

Use of flutemetamol F18-labeled positron emission tomography and other biomarkers to assess risk of clinical progression in patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment
Importance: Patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) may progress to clinical Alzheimer disease (AD), remain stable, or revert to normal. Earlier progression to AD among patients who were β-amyloid positive vs those who were β-amyloid negative has been previously observed. Current research now accepts that a combination of biomarkers could provide greater refinement in the assessmen
APOGEE Data Releases 13 and 14 : Data and Analysis
The data and analysis methodology used for the SDSS/APOGEE Data Releases 13 and 14 are described, highlighting differences from the DR12 analysis presented in Holtzman et al. Some improvement in the handling of telluric absorption and persistence is demonstrated. The derivation and calibration of stellar parameters, chemical abundances, and respective uncertainties are described, along with the ra

In vivo detection of alzheimer’s disease
Recent revisions to the diagnostic criteria for Alzheimer’s disease (AD†) incorporated conceptual advances in the field. Specifically, AD is now recognized to encompass a continuum, spanning from preclinical (accruing brain pathology in the absence of symptoms) through symptomatic predementia (prodromal AD, mild cognitive impairment) and dementia phases. The role of biological markers (biomarkers)

The Gaia-ESO Survey: properties of newly discovered Li-rich giants
Aims. We report 20 new lithium-rich giants discovered within the Gaia-ESO Survey, including the first Li-rich giant with an evolutionary stage confirmed by CoRoT (Convection, Rotation and planetary Transits) data. We present a detailed overview of the properties of these 20 stars. Methods. Atmospheric parameters and abundances were derived in model atmosphere analyses using medium-resolution GIRAF
Getting old in a changing world : Sons, pension, and the wellbeing of the elderly in contemporary China
The Chinese population is rapidly aging, which has brought challenges for the elderly support system. Until very recently, only urban employees were eligible to receive a pension, while the rural elderly were forced to rely on income from their own labor and support from their family. In these circumstances, it is unsurprising that the rural elderly were most likely to fall into poverty. The recen
Strategic Ignorance of Health Risk: Its Causes and Policy Consequences
We examine the causes and policy consequences of strategic (willful) ignorance of risk as an excuse to overengage in risky health behavior. In an experiment on Copenhagen adults, we allow subjects to choose whether to learn the calorie content of a meal before consuming it, and measure their subsequent calorie intake. We find strong evidence of strategic ignorance: 46% of subjects choose to ignore

A population based pediatric oncology registry in Southern Sweden : the BORISS registry
A population based registry, with the acronym BORISS, was established. It contains all individuals (0-18 years of age at diagnosis) diagnosed with cancer from 1970-01-01 until 2016-12-31 in Southern Sweden. The treatment data has been entered into the registry after confirmation of the diagnosis by the Swedish national cancer registry and updates on vital status from the Swedish population registr

Measurements and estimations of biosphere-atmosphere exchange of greenhouse gases - Arable lands
An overview of carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange and soil respiration measurements is given for representative Hungarian agroecosystems. We present results of long-term atmosphere/biosphere CO2 exchange measurements carried out at the Hungarian tall tower site (Hegyhá tsál). Tall tower net ecosystem exchange (NEE) measurements provided consistent estimates of landscape-wide carbon dioxide dynamics. Du
New concepts for the starch industry: Glucose demudding by a decanter membrane synergy process
The starch industry is a key sector of the European food industry with an annual turnover of approx. €4 billion. The production processes in the starch industry are still dominated by conventional separation processes such as evaporators, separators and rotary vacuum filters (RVFs). Membrane processes are only rarely used. This presentation will show how membrane processes can be used to optimise
Applications of Membrane Technology in the Food Industry - An approach to reduce food processing costs and to improve food quality
Over the last two decades, the global market for membrane technology in the food industry increased to a market volume of about € 800 - 850 million and is now the second biggest industrial market for membranes after water and wastewater treatment including desalination. The key membrane technologies in the food industry are the pressure driven membrane processes microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltrati
