Biomaterials used during surgery and wound treatment are of increasing importance in modern medical care. In the present study we set out to evaluate the addition of thrombin-derived host defense peptides to human acellular dermis (hAD, i.e. epiflex(®)). Antimicrobial activity of the functionalized hAD was demonstrated using radial diffusion and viable count assays against Gram-negative Escherichi

Hospital-based home care (HBHC) is widely applied in Pediatric Oncology. We reviewed the potential effect of HBHC on children's physical health and risk of adverse events, parental and child satisfaction, quality of life of children and their parents, and costs. A search of PubMed, CINAHL, and EMBASE led to identification of five studies that met the inclusion criteria. All sample sizes were small

Unexpected transitions are induced by weaker interactions not included in the gross structure model of the ion under investigation. We discuss different examples of such decay channels, starting with relativistic spin-induced transitions. These represented an important field of study a few decades ago, and we illustrate how some challenging cases can be treated very accurately with today's computa

Malarial infections are often genetically diverse, leading to competitive interactions between parasites. A quantitative understanding of the competition between strains is essential to understand a wide range of issues, including the evolution of virulence and drug resistance. In this study, we use dynamical-model based Bayesian inference to investigate the cause of competitive suppression of an

Objective. To study the effect of valgus malalignment on knee osteoarthritis (OA) incidence and progression. Methods. We measured the mechanical axis from long limb radiographs from the Multicenter Osteoarthritis Study (MOST) and the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI) to define limbs with valgus malalignment (mechanical axis of >= 1.1 degrees valgus) and examined the effect of valgus alignment versus

Most macroeconomic and financial panel variables are trending. However, because of the well-known power problem in the presence of incidental trends, many researchers gamble that their unit root test regressions can be ran without such trends, thereby running the risk of obtaining spurious results. This article takes one of the most general and popular panel unit root tests, known as PANIC, and sh

Cellobiose dehydrogenase (CDH) has recently become a redox enzyme at focus in bioelectrochemistry especially for the construction of sugar biosensors and biofuel cell anodes. The present study shows that an increase in the CaCl2 concentration to up to 100 mM led to an increase in the maximal catalytic current generated by two different Ascomycete and one Basidiomycete CDH immobilised on a spectros

We show for the first time that 1,2-dilauroyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidyladenosine nucleolipid surface complexes with cationic poly(amidoamine) dendrimers can be used to selectively bind DNA including oligonucleotides. This molecular recognition has high potential for applications involving biomedical and bioanalytic devices as well as drug delivery systems based on nucleic acids.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a heterogeneous group of neurodevelopmental disorders with a complex inheritance pattern. While many rare variants in synaptic proteins have been identified in patients with ASD, little is known about their effects at the synapse and their interactions with other genetic variations. Here, following the discovery of two de novo SHANK2 deletions by the Autism Geno

Human fetal midbrain tissue grafting has provided proof-of-concept for dopamine cell replacement therapy (CRT) in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, limited tissue availability has hindered the development and widespread use of this experimental therapy. Here we present a method for generating large numbers of midbrain dopaminergic (DA) neurons based on expanding and differentiating neural stem/pr

A new acylated neohesperoside derivative, 1-octyl-4'-isovaleroyl-neohesperoside (1), was isolated from Geranium purpureum Vill. (Geraniaceae) together with the known compounds quercetin-3-rutinoside and gallic acid. The identification of the isolated compounds was carried out by spectroscopic analysis including 1D- and 2D- NMR (H-1, C-13, COSY, HSQC and HMBC) spectroscopy and ESI-TOF-MS.

We present a light-storage experiment in a praseodymium-doped crystal where the light is mapped onto an inhomogeneously broadened optical transition shaped into an atomic frequency comb. After absorption of the light, the optical excitation is converted into a spin-wave excitation by a control pulse. A second control pulse reads the memory (on-demand) by reconverting the spin-wave excitation to an

Objectives:Body size is postulated to modulate type 1 diabetes as either a trigger of islet autoimmunity or an accelerator to clinical onset after seroconversion. As overweight and obesity continue to rise among children, the aim of this study was to determine whether human leukocyte antigen DQ (HLA-DQ) genotypes may be related to body size among children genetically at risk for type 1 diabetes.Me

Abstract Dercum's disease is characterised by pronounced pain in the adipose tissue and a number of associated symptoms and is, in most patients, accompanied by obesity. Postoperative sensory change after liposuction is a well-known side effect, and probably caused by mechanical trauma to the nerves. The aim of this investigation was to find out whether the thermal and sensory sensation changed af

Plasma low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) has been associated with aortic stenosis in observational studies; however, randomized trials with cholesterol-lowering therapies in individuals with established valve disease have failed to demonstrate reduced disease progression.

We report calculations of Born-Oppenheimer potential energy curves of the chromium-rubidium heteronuclear molecule ((CrRb)-Cr-52-Rb-87), and the long-range dispersion coefficient for the interaction between ground state Cr and Rb atoms. Our calculated van der Waals coefficient (C-6 = 1770 a.u.) has an expected error of 3%. The ground state (6)Sigma(+) molecule at its equilibrium separation has a p

Objective: The objective of the present study was to evaluate the pharmacokinetics and the clearance pathways of rFVIIa after intravenous administration to haemophilia patients. Methods: Ten severe haemophilia patients were included in the study; all patients were intravenously administered a clinical relevant dose of 90 μg/kg (1.8 nmol/kg) rFVIIa. Blood samples were collected consecutively to des
