New excited states have been observed in the neutron deficient isotope Ag-98 following the Ni-58+Cr-50-->Te-108* heavy-ion reaction. One of these states may be interpreted as a maximum spin aligned state of the pi g(9/2)(-3) nu vg(7/2) configuration. Other possible interpretations within the nuclear shell model are discussed as well.

The intermetallic compounds FeGa3 and RuGa3 were prepared from the elements using a Ga flux and their structures were refined from single-crystal X-ray data. Both compounds crystallize with the FeGa3 structure type (tetragonal, space group P4(2)/mnm, Z=4). Electrical resistivity measurements revealed a semiconducting behavior for FeGa3 and RuGa3, which is in contrast to the good metallic conductiv

Human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV-16) is a major cause of human cancer. Effective prophylactic vaccines are based on type-specific neutralizing antibodies. A major neutralizing epitope has been defined by the monoclonal antibody H16.V5. To investigate the importance of this epitope for overall immunogenicity of HPV-16, HPV-16 virus-like particles devoid of the H16.V5 epitope were engineered by sit

BACKGROUND: Immunohistochemical staining for tumor-associated proteins is widely used for the identification of novel prognostic markers. Recently, a tissue-conserving, high-throughput technique, tissue microarray, has been introduced. This technique uses 0.6-mm tissue core biopsy specimens, 500 to 1000 of which are brought into a new paraffin array block, which can be sectioned up to 100 times. M

We performed a systematic, large-scale analysis of human protein complexes comprising gene products implicated in many different categories of human disease to create a phenome-interactome network. This was done by integrating quality-controlled interactions of human proteins with a validated, computationally derived phenotype similarity score, permitting identification of previously unknown compl

GABA is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian CNS. GABA in the brain is commonly associated with a fast, point-to-point form of signalling called synaptic transmission (phasic inhibition), but there is growing evidence that GABA participates in another, slower and more diffuse form of signalling often referred to as tonic inhibition. Unresolved questions regarding tonic neuronal in

Avhandlingen tar uThis dissertation examines and discusses some phenomena related to the geometric representation of similarity. It takes its inspiration from the existing body of empirical research within the fields of perceptual and cognitive psychology, but also connects to certain areas of machine learning. The problems discussed concern the modelling of information integration behavior when concepts like asym

In this letter the distribution of slow target associated particles emitted in Au + Emulsion interactions at 11.6 A GeV/c is studied, The three models RQMD, FRITIOF and VENUS are used for comparisons and especially their treatment of rescattering is investigated.

The magnetic moments of the 8(+) yrast state in Zr-86 and the 17/2(-) and 21/2(+) yrast states in Nb-87 have been measured via the IMPAD technique, The nuclei were produced in the Ni-58(S-32,Xp) reaction; the time-integral Larmor precessions were measured after recoil implantation into a polarised Fe foil. The g-factors are used to deduce the character of the g(9/2) Shell alignments within the sta

The effects of UV-C (254 nm), UV-A (365 nm) and broad-band UV (280-380 nm) on guard cells of Vicia faba L. cv. Long Pod were investigated in the presence of white light (450 .mu.mol m-2 s-1). UV-C (7 .mu.mol m-2 s-1) was found to cause leakage of 86Rb+ from guard cells, while UV-A (0.3 .mu.mol m-2 s-1) stimulated increased uptake in these cells. A relatively small stimulatory effect was observed b

This review discusses the complicated two-electron dynamics of a helium atom in an intense, short laser pulse. A helium gas in femtosecond laser pulses at long wave lengths (lambda similar to 700 nm) and high intensities (I similar to 10(15) W/cm(2)) produces surprisingly high numbers of He2+ ions. These laser fields cause large and fast electron oscillations, which makes a solution of the time-de

It has been shown that the potential for environmental, and financial improvements through the increased substitution of inperson meetings by virtual communication is considerable. However, it has also been shown that this potential is not automatically realized by investing in the technology that can enable virtual meetings. This paper describes two case studies that explored the factors that inf

Diatoms from the surface sediments and sediments cores in the Skagerrak-Kattegat were analyzed and the results were presented in four papers and discussions. The broad aims of this thesis are twofold. The first aim is to correlate diatom data from the surface sediments to modern sedimentary environments, and try to find out the relationships between environmental variables such as salinity, temper

Adenohypophyseal-hormone production is regulated by hypothalamic peptides and target-gland hormones. Additionally, paracrine regulation by folliculo-stellate cells within the pituitary has been suggested. We recently showed TSH receptor expression in human folliculo-stellate cells and speculated that receptors for other adenohypophyseal hormones might also be expressed by folliculo-stellate cells.

A cultivation strategy combining the advantages of temperature-limited fed-batch and probing feeding control is presented. The technique was evaluated in fed-batch cultivations with E. coli BL21(DE3) producing xylanase in a 3 liter bioreactor. A 20% increase in cell mass was achieved and the usual decrease in specific enzyme activity normally observed during the late production phase was diminishe

BACKGROUND: The brain-derived protein S100B has been shown to be a useful marker of brain injury of different etiologies. Cognitive dysfunction after cardiac surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass has been reported to occur in up to 70% of patients. In this study we tried to evaluate S100B as a marker for cognitive dysfunction after coronary bypass surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass in a model wher
