Workshop, November 11, 2026: Sound and/as research method
When: November 11, 2026. 1-4 PM
Where: Lund University; “LUX building”; Helgonavägen 3, 223 62 Lund; room: LUXC326.
Nature, contrary to what happens with the eye and with light, seems to have gathered up and crumpled everything together, as much in the world of physics as in the worlds of physiology and psychology, as far as sound and the ear go.
(Pierre Schaeffer, quoted by Michael Chion, Sound, 2016, p. 197)
Sound and/as research method is an open workshop which invites participants to reflect on the role of and share their experiences with sound and orality in research, not only as objects of study but also as methods of investigation and inquiry. These methods include but are not limited to approaches which involve listening, reading aloud, recording, re-recording, manual and automated dictation, as well as using recorded audio in research publications, including experience with producing audio papers, podcasts, or other oral or sound artefacts as research outputs. If, as Schaeffer suggests, sound tends to be ‘crumpled together’, this workshop is an attempt to ‘uncrumple’ it, and to consider the ways in which greater specificity and attention can be paid to the roles sound plays in research.
This workshop will take place prior to the Between Sound and Text conference on November 12-13 2026, and will be hosted by Dr Sara Tanderup Linkis and Dr Millicent Weber. It is open to conference participants and anyone else with an interest in the relationship between sound and research. Through this workshop, we hope to develop a better understanding of sound’s role in research across the board, and encourage further exploratory and cross-disciplinary collaboration in this space.
There is a limited number of seats available for this event. To register for the workshop, please email Sara Tanderup Linkis: sara.tanderup_linkiskultur.luse no later than October 30, 2026.
The workshop is sponsored by the Sound Environment Center, Lund University.
